When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not. In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.” She glanced down at me through her glasses, “you are no different from your classmates, young man.” I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home. In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind. Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was no different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up? I didn’t expect anything when I handled in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day- with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:“ See what you can do when you keep trying?” 21. The author didn’t finish the reading in class because. A. He was new to the class B. He was tried of literature C. He had an attention disorder D. He wanted to take the task home 22. What was Mrs. Smith’s attitude to the author at the end of the story? A. Angry B. Impatient C. Sympathetic D. Encouraging 23. What is the main idea of the passage? A.The disabled should be treated with respect. B.A teacher can open up a new world to students. C. One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts. D. Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges. ( B ) China’s new term, tuhao, may be in next year’s Oxford English Dictionary. The word caught the attention of the dictionary’s editing team after BBC’s recent program on influential Chinese words. “If its influence continues, it is very likely to appear on our updated list of words,” said Julie Kleeman, project manager with the editing team. In Chinese tu means uncouth(粗鲁的) and hao means rich. It has traditionally been referred to rich people who throw their weight around in China’s countryside. The word became more popular with the launch of Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone, which is loved by China’s rich people. The color became known as “tuhao gold”. The word is now also used by the online community to refer to people who have the cash but lack the class to go with it. Kleeman also mentioned other Chinese word—dama, which means middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal in May when thousands of Chinese women were buying up record number of gold. They were the driving force in the global gold market between April and July when the gold prices had dropped. People can have an intuitive(直觉的)grasp of the meanings if they see pinyin, Kleeman said, adding that people avoid using an English word to keep the original meaning. “We have nearly 120 Chinese-linked words now in Oxford English Dictionary,” she said. Some of them are: guanxi, which means “connection”; taikonaut, a mix of taikong, meaning outer space, and astronaut. The new words will be first uploaded on the official website before the dictionaries arrive. The online version is also renewed every three months.“It at least broke our old rules. It used to take 10 years to include a new word but now we keep pace with the time,” according to a statement from ex-chief-editor John Simpson. 24.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text? It's a constant pressure of homework deadlines, essays and exams. And our children are told at a young age that failing a test means that they are failures in life. They'll end up nowhere if they don't pass this or that exam. Our educational system is based on a very Western idea that life is a struggle and you'd better measure up. It's survival of the fittest. While there is some truth to this, not as much as people think. Our ancestors didn't develop a constant stress environment. Back then, stress came quickly and was over quickly, it wasn't like the stress of modern education. Stress was originally just a shortterm biological response to danger; however, the constant stress of modern education rarely stops. It's long term, at least ten years and usually more. Recent research has shown that the neurological(神经系统的)response to stress is the same response that is found in depression. So, what's the solution? A number have been proposed, including but not limited to the following. Make sure that kids get exercise Exercise consumes(消耗) energy that would otherwise build up in the stress response and could cause physical and mental problems. Teach relaxation exercises. Allowing the mind and body to relax cuts off the stress response and reduces the neurological fatigue(疲劳),enabling the individual to recover at least somewhat. Pay attention to thinking. Training the stressed student to pay attention to his or her own mind to a point where he or she is sufficiently aware to shut off the stress response when necessary. Of course, there's a logical answer to the problem. Just rearrange our teaching methods to encourage, rather than prevent, the natural curiosity and joy in learning that we are all born with. This would remove the stress and probably cut learning time in half. 32.What is the main idea of the passage? A. Dealing with stress in modern education. B. Helping children live a happy life. C. Getting rid of the modern education. D. Taking measures to learn at school. 33. Children feel stressed because ______. A. they dislike the educational technique B. they have no ability to finish their homework C. they are convinced (相信)high grades are important D. they suffer numbers of failures in their life 34. How did our ancestors treat education? A. They thought education was the only way to success. B. They felt education could bring shortterm stress. C. They believed education could bring the best out. D. They knew the importance of good education. 35. If you are a teacher in a high school ______. A. you should relax yourself as far as possible B. you should ignore the stressed student C. you should leave students in a good mood D. you should stick to your teaching methods ( E ) 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or springclean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter. 1. Get Out of Bed Earlier If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That halfhour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been meaning to finish. 37 2. Do the Important Tasks First Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones. 38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones. 3. Reduce Interruptions If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration. When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail. 39 Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation. 4. 40 A few minutes' chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When you're working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with. A. Stay Focused on Your Work B. Take Breaks When Necessary C. If you have an office door, close it. D. If you work like this, you'll usually save time. E. Would you want me to make your day longer? F. I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long. G. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start. 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
