The strongest one in North America was in 1964. It happened in Alaska.‎ Strong earthquakes are not always the ones that kill the most people. In 1755, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal. Around 2,000 people died.‎ In 1923, a very strong earthquake hit Tokyo, Yokohama area of Japan. A hundred and forty thousand people died. Most of them died in fires which followed the earthquake.‎ One of the worst earthquakes ever was in China in 2008. It killed a large number of people. The worst earthquake ever reported was also in China, in which 400,000 people were killed or injured. This earthquake happened in 1556.‎ Earthquakes worry people a lot. The reason is that we often do not know when they are coming. People cannot prepare for earthquakes.‎ ‎24.Earthquakes happen ________.‎ A. in all the places in the world B. only in the countries that have a lot of mountains C. regularly in most places in the world D. only in a few places along the coast ‎25.When and where was the worst earthquake ever reported?‎ A. How do earthquakes happen?‎ C If you have a chance to take a walk in a park, look carefully at the people walking their dogs. You’ll probably find friendly-looking people with friendly dogs; quiet people with quiet dogs; large men with oversized dogs and long-haired women with long-eared dogs. As you’ve probably noticed, dogs and their owners look alike. Have you ever wondered why?‎ These similarities are so common that researchers have tried to explain them. There are two theories (理论): the convergence (趋同) theory and the selection theory. The convergence theory says that as the owner and the dog spend more time together, they influence each other to the point where they grow similar. In other words, they ‎ “converge.”The selection theory, on the other hand, says that owners are interested in dogs that look like them, so they choose those dogs as pets.‎ Recently, researchers at the University of California decided to test the two theories by taking pictures of 45 dogs separately from their owners. Then they asked some students to match the dogs’ photos with their owners. The students were quite successful with purebred (纯种的) dogs: they correctly matched 16 out of 25 with their owners. However, they had almost no success connecting mixed-breed (杂交的) dogs with their owners. When owners select a purebred dog, they can easily predict (预测) what it will look like later. But that is not true with mixed-breed dogs because it’s hard to predict what a mixed-breed dog will look like when it grows up. And since it was the purebreds not the mixed-breeds that looked like their owners, the research seems to prove the“selection theory”.‎ But one bit of warning. Although many people look like their dogs, not all dog owners enjoy having the similarity pointed out to them. So, even if the similarity is amazing, don’t go up to a stranger and say,“Wow, you look just like your dog!”‎ ‎28.The convergence theory explains that the similarity between dogs and their owners _____.‎ A. decreases with the age of them B. decreases with increasing differences C. increases with the period of ownership (所有权, 拥有权)‎ D. increases with increasing attractiveness ‎29.According to the selection theory, why do dogs look like their owners?‎ A. They influence each other.‎ B. They often do the same thing.‎ C. Dogs follow what their owners do.‎ D. Owners pick dogs that look like them.‎ ‎30.What’s the purpose of the research?‎ A. To test two similarity theories.‎ B. To prove the selection theory.‎ C. To help people choose proper dogs.‎ D. To show the differences between dogs.‎ ‎31.What can we learn from the research?‎ A. Purebred dogs have predictable appearance.‎ B. Most owners want their dogs to look like them.‎ C. Mixed-breeds and their owners share similarities.‎ D. Most owners prefer purebred dogs to mixed-breeds.‎ D There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant but are not.‎ ‎“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical performance or concert. To face the music means to accept the unpleasant results of an action.‎ Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please do not drive it. It is an extremely fast car.” But you do not listen. You want to show off and pretend the car is yours. So, you drive it around town. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. That could mean losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.‎ There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.‎ To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!‎ ‎“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But, that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that on another Words and Their Stories.‎ ‎32.What does “face the music” mean?‎ A. Going to a musical performance. B. Apologizing to the person you have hurt.‎ C. Dealing with the situation you have caused. D. Accepting the unpleasant results of an action.‎ ‎33.Which of the following expressions doesn’t have the same meaning with the others?‎ A. Face the music. B. Make your bed.‎ C. Take your medicine. D. Pay the piper.‎ ‎34.Which action belongs to a “take your medicine”?‎ A. You caught a cold and took some medicine.‎ B. You worked hard but failed in the exam.‎ C. You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident.‎ D. You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.‎ ‎35.What may be talked about in the next programme?‎ A. Other words and their stories. B. The beginning of “pay the piper”.‎ C. The wider use of “face the music”. D. We have stopped doing the one thing that has proven to bring success. 37.”‎ One study found that young adults who began chores at ages 3 and 4 were more likely to succeed. Compared to no-chore kids, they had better family relations, did better in school, did better at work and were more self-confident.Personal happiness is said to come from strong relationships.
