Well, anyone who struggled to get through a mile knows it’s not quite that simple. We’ve asked experienced runners to tell us something wrong they did when they started running. The following are some of their answers.‎ I got excited and signed up for a half-marathon with a few more experienced runner friends, but I wasn’t adequately prepared and didn’t train efficiently. I ended up with blisters(水泡) on my feet. I couldn’t wear shoes for two days!‎ ‎—Cali Lavey I have always been athletic and I have never been badly injured, but one day I felt a slight pain in my knee. I ignored it for a month until I realized I was having a hard time putting weight on my right leg. I finally went to a doctor. It took four months of weekly physical therapy(治疗) to heal. I shouldn’t have done that.‎ ‎—Arnold My biggest mistake was treating running like soccer practice: If I wasn’t exhausted by the end of practice, I felt as though I didn’t work hard enough. I run all of my runs at 80 percent effort, or the equivalent of what I now call tempo runs (节奏跑). I wasn’t warming up to the pace or cooling down effectively.‎ ‎—Kate I decided to go out for a run during the hottest part of the day. At the time, I told myself that it would be refreshing to sweat a little, but I didn’t bring adequate water. I returned feeling completely rundown, dehydrated (脱水的), and exhausted. If you must go out on a run during unfavorable weather, wear proper suits and bring enough water to keep you feeling strong.‎ ‎— Sarah ‎11.Why did Cali suffer from her half-marathon?‎ A.She ran all the way barefoot. B.She didn’t get ready for it.‎ C.She ran with experienced runners. D.She did not have self-confidence.‎ ‎12.What did Arnold regret doing?‎ A.Thinking he would never get injured. ‎ B.Putting heavy weight on his right leg.‎ C.Spending about four month s treating his knee.‎ D.Waiting for so long to get his knee examined.‎ ‎13.The examples of the four runners mainly show that ________.‎ A.we should warm up before running B.we should bring enough water when running C.we shouldn’t think running is very easy D.we shouldn’t ignore any pain when running ‎ B Watching some children trying to catch butterflies one hot August afternoon, I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that cured me forever of wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.‎ We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the trees and sing. There isn’t a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.‎ I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.‎ I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, in its fright at being captured, the bird fluttered about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.‎ I had left the cage out on our back porch, and on the second day of the bird’s captivity(囚禁) my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.‎ The following morning when I went to see how my captive was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! I had taken excellent care of my little bird, or so I thought.‎ Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison berries. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity.”‎ Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.‎ ‎14.Why did the writer catch a mockingbird when he was a boy of 12?‎ A.He had just got a new cage. B.He liked its beautiful feather.‎ C.He wanted it to sing for him. D.He wanted a pet for a companion.‎ ‎15.The mockingbird died because it ______.‎ A.was frightened to death B.ate the poisonous food its mother gave it C.refused to eat anything D.drank the poisonous water by mistake ‎16.An ornithologist probably means ______.‎ A.a religious person B.a kind person ‎ C.a schoolmaster D.an expert in birds ‎17.What is the most important lesson the writer learned from the incident?‎ A.Freedom is very valuable to all creatures.‎ B.All birds put in a cage won’t live long.‎ C.You should keep the birds from their mother.‎ D.Be careful about food you give to baby birds. ‎ C In an effort to control the nation’s growing problem of food wastage, the South Korean government has started a new plan — “Pay as You Trash”. Residents (居民) are required to separate their food waste from the rest of their trash and throw it separately in a centralized (集中的) bin. And in order to access the bin, they actually need to pay by the kilo!‎ As of now, the South Korean government has three methods in place to charge citizens for the food thrown away. One is through an RFID (Radio Frequency ‎ Identification) card — when users tap this card over a specially designed food waste bin, the lid will open. This waste is automatically weighed and recorded in the user’s account. The user needs to settle this bill on a monthly basis. ‎ The second billing method is through pre-paid garbage bags. For instance, in Seoul, a 10-liter garbage bag costs about $1. There’s also a bar code (条形码) management system in place, in which residents throw food waste directly into composting bins (堆肥桶) and pay for it by purchasing bar code stickers attached to the bin.‎ Nearly every suburban area in the nation is equipped with one of these three payment systems. Even before the pay-by-weight system was introduced, South Koreans were still being charged for food waste — the cost was simply divided equally among the residents of each apartment block. The new system is not only fair, but is also designed to make consumers really feel the pinch of too much waste. The more food they throw out, the more they end up paying.‎ Citizens like Seoul housewife Ms. Kwan are now adopting creative methods to avoid food waste. She makes sure to remove all the liquid out of leftover food before throwing it away. While preparing vegetables, she tries to make use of as much the eatable parts as possible.‎ ‎“Because I’m worried about the fees, I’m more careful about food waste now,” she said. “Our food waste has become much less than before.”‎ ‎18. The centralized dustbin is used to ________.‎ A. cut down the household rubbish B. collect the household rubbish C. keep food rubbish D. break down food rubbish ‎19. The pre-paid garbage bags are charged on a monthly basis.‎ D. RFID cards can record the weight of rubbish users throw.‎ ‎20. Before the new plan was put forward, citizens _________.‎ A. didn’t pay for their food waste B. shared the waste cost equally C. paid for their food waste by weight D. had to pay for their food garbage bags ‎21. The underlined word “pinch” in paragraph 4 means ___________.‎ A. burden B. joy C. excitement D. surprise ‎22. According to the text, “Pay as You Trash” _______________.‎ A. is working effectively B. was thought to be unfair at first C. is quite expensive to carry out D. is not accepted by residents ‎ D Is there a way to turn back the aging process in people? For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink its water, you will not age.‎ Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears that the answer may be called the hypothalamus, which is part of your brain. It controls important body activities, including growth, the way we process food and so on. Researchers found that hypothalamus neural stem cells (干细胞) also influence how fast aging takes place.‎ Dongsheng Cai was the leading researcher in a study on aging in mice. He and his team reported their findings. “when the hypothalamus starts aging, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, so does the body.” he said. ‎ Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. The results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. “When we injected the hypothalamus stem cells to the middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they could also live longer.”‎ But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings. If so, they say the findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat age-related health problems.‎ ‎23. Why does the author mention the “fountain of youth” in the first paragraph?‎ A. To explain what the “fountain of youth” is. ‎ B. To introduce the hypothalamus.‎ C. To show how to find the “fountain of youth”. ‎ D. To help people find the “fountain of youth”.‎ ‎24. What do we know about the study done by Cai?‎ A. They have found a way to turn back the aging process.‎ B. The brain controls growth, reproduction and the way we process food.‎ C. The decrease of hypothalamus stem cells can lead to aging.‎ D. The finding has been applied to human beings.‎ ‎25. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?‎ A. The Secret of Youth B. A New Discovery about Aging C.
