The most embarrassing was when my Mom apologized to the people we were staying with because her “pants were dirty”. They looked at her in amazement, not knowing how to react. You see, Mom had fallen over and gotten mud on her jeans. But in Britain, “pants” means underpants or knickers (内裤), not trousers as it does back home.‎ Katie—From America I went to stay with a friend on the west coast last summer. Her flat was on the first floor of a highrise building so I got the lift up. Then I wandered round for ages looking for her flat but couldn’t find it. Fed up and tired, I finally had to go out to find a phone box. She explained that her flat was on the first floor, which for me meant the ground floor.‎ David—From Britain When I asked for the “restroom” in a big department store, people kept directing me to a room with seats where I could sit and “rest”. It took me years to get through to someone that I only ‎ wanted the toilet!‎ Tom—From America Last summer we went on a twoweek family touring holiday, so Dad hired a car over the Internet. This was an old vehicle and there turned out to be lots of things wrong with it. When he phoned the hire company and tried to explain that the lock on the boot was broken, they thought he was talking about footwear! He had no idea their word for “boot” was “trunk”. In the end we went to a garage and just solved the problem.‎ Mary—From Britain 21. Hearing Katie’s mother’s words, Katie’s friends were in surprise because________.‎ A.Katie’s mother got mud on her jeans B.Katie’s mother’s underpants were dirty C.they didn’t know English D.they mistook “pants” in America for underpants 22. When Tom asked for the “restroom”, the people around him thought ________.‎ A. he wanted to go to a department store B. he wanted the toilet C. he wanted a chair D. he wanted to have a rest B I recently traveled with my family to Itacare, Brazil. Itacare is a small town in the state of Bahia, which is known for its beautiful beaches. While there, I met a man named Alvimar Valadares. He walks more than 12 miles a day without wearing shoes, looking for sea turtles on the beaches and picking up plastic.‎ There are few sea turtles left alive now in Brazil and around the world. Valadares, who prefers to be called “Capixaba,” wants to help save them. A local hotel sponsors (赞助) his work.‎ Several years ago, the hotel manager noticed a group of people watching in respectful silence as Capixaba saved three baby sea turtles. The hotel manager realized that these turtles were great ambassadors (大使). They draw people’s attention and make them want to learn about and protect the local environment. ‎ Capixaba has worked in the hotel’s Tartaruga Program for the past 15 years. (Tartaruga means turtle in Portuguese.)‎ In addition to watching and checking sea turtles, Capixaba meets with local schoolchildren and fishermen to teach them how to protect the turtles and the environment. The more that people know, Capixaba said, the more they can help protect the turtles and the environment. For example, since sea turtle hatchlings (幼崽) follow the reflection (反射) of the water to get to the ocean, it’s important for local houses and hotels to keep their lights dim (暗淡的) at night. That way, the hatchlings will know which way to go. ‎ ‎“I really like to work with and teach kids,” Capixaba said. “They’re the ones who are going to change this and help the turtles.” Then he let me hold one of the turtle eggs!‎ ‎24. Why does Valadares walk along the coast?‎ A. To stop tourists catching sea turtles. B. To record sea turtles’ population.‎ C. To raise sea turtles for a hotel. D. To help save sea turtles.‎ ‎25. What did the hotel manager think of sea turtles?‎ A. They needed to be protected. B. They could bring Bahia business.‎ C. They attracted visitors to the hotel. D. They helped people learn about Brazil.‎ ‎26. The example in Paragraph 5 is used to show _____.‎ A. what sea turtles do at night B. how serious light pollution is C. when sea turtle hatchlings get to the ocean D. why it matters to spread knowledge of sea turtles C The Pharos, the great lighthouse of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It stood on the island of Pharos, in the harbor (港口) of the city of Alexandria. In 290 B.C, Ptolemy I Soter, the ruler of Egypt, ordered the building of the lighthouse. Twenty years later, it was finished — the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building on Earth, besides the Great Pyramid of Egypt.‎ The Pharos was designed by Sostrates, a Greek architect (建筑师). Sostrates wanted to leave his name on the base of the lighthouse. But Ptolemy refused, ordering that only his own name appear on the building. But Sostrates found a way to do that. At the base of the Pharos, Sostrates ‎ left a message containing his own name. Then he covered it with plaster (建筑石膏) and left Ptolemy’s name over it. After many years, the plaster disappeared and people knew the true architect of the lighthouse.‎ In 1302 and 1323, two strong earthquakes hit Alexandria, damaging the lighthouse. In 1326, it finally fell into the sea. Much of what we know about the lighthouse comes from the writings of Arabs who once visited the Pharos.‎ The Pharos was about 384 feet tall, the same height as a modern 40-story building. At the top of the lighthouse stood a large statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Under it was a beacon, the source of light for the lighthouse. The Pharos used two kinds of beacons. At night, a large fire created the light. During the day, a huge mirror made use of the sunlight to create the light. ‎ It was said that the mirror was also used to set enemy ships on fire as they entered the harbor by directing the sun’s rays (sunlight) at them. While the idea is interesting, it is also clearly impossible.‎ ‎27. Why did Sostrates use plaster at the base of the Pharos?‎ A. To follow Ptolemy’s orders. B. To hide his name left on the base.‎ C. To protect the base from damage. D. To make the lighthouse more beautiful.‎ ‎28. How long had the Pharos stayed standing? ‎ A. For about 800 years. B. For about 1,000 years.‎ C. For about 1,600 years. D. For about 2,000 years.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?‎ A. The lighthouse. B. The statue. C. A large fire. D. A huge mirror.‎ ‎30. What’s the main purpose of the text?‎ A. To explain why the Pharos was built.‎ B. To find more secrets about the Pharos.‎ C. To offer some basic facts about the Pharos.‎ D. To introduce the true architect of the Pharos.‎ 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Scientists often see the first ten years of a child’s life as the “window of opportunity”,‎ ‎ 31.____________ And studies show that the following activities can benefit their brain greatly.‎ ‎32.___________‎ Free playtime has always been an important part of “being a kid”, but it is also important to a child’s development. “Free play” not only helps kids develop different skills, it also helps them develop into happy healthy adults in the future.‎ Read with kids.‎ Reading has long been known to improve children’s intelligence. 33._________ For parents who don’t have much time, just surrounding your kids with books goes a long way too.‎ Put kids to bed early.‎ ‎34._________ Preschool children should get at least eleven hours of sleep and kids up to age 12 should try to get at least ten hours of sleep.‎ Learn a second language.‎ Early studies in this field have shown that bilingual (双语的) kids can perform better under pressure.
