For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger. However, it acts only as a guide, and it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger at your favorite fast food restaurant. Now Panasonic’s new device, CaloRieco, can actually give you accurate information on exactly what is on your plate in a few seconds. Shown at the CEATEC 2017 tech show, CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection to offer accurate calorie information so as to determine the nutritional values of any food. All you have to do is place your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food there. Once it’s done analyzing the various foods in your meal, CaloRieco displays the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to Panasonic, the device is able to recognize most of foods, except soups and similar food. CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your Personal Digital Assistant, so you can access it whenever you need. Panasonic said that its invention is aimed at people going on a diet and diabetes(糖尿病) sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at CEATEC is just a model. It’s scheduled to hit the market sometime in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery. 25. What’s special about CaloRieco? A. It can be linked to our smartphones. B. It can act as a guide on healthy food. C. It can tell you the average calories in food. D. It can provide accurate information on food. 26. What’s the disadvantage of CaloRieco? A. It is difficult to operate. B. It couldn’t be used outdoors. C. It cannot work without an app. D. It works poorly with liquid food. 27. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. We can get CaloRieco at a cheap price. B. CaloRieco can not be used to consumers at present. C. CaloRieco is not suitable for healthy people. D. The invention of CaloRieco is proved to be a success. C Alida Monaco doesn’t spend her summers doing the usual teenage work, like working at the mall. Instead, she’s studying. It used to be that a summer job was considered a teenage thing. Today, Monaco, who has never had a summer job, is part of growing trend(趋势) teenagers concentrating on their studies, even during the summer. That’s down from 72% of Americans aged 16 to 19 who worked in July of 1978, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fierce competition, older workers returning to the workforce and weak economic growth are all adding to the decrease of teenagers in the workforce. But as schoolwork grows increasingly heavy and homework eats up more time, data suggest the biggest reason why some teens won’t be working this summer is that they simply don’t have time. For college-bound teens, some teachers even advise students not to waste time on a summer job. “Some of my students only have about six weeks off in the summer,” said Shannon Reed, a lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh and a former high school English teacher. “I could never advise that they get jobs during that short break. They should rest.” Young people who don’t work may miss out on valuable skills that they’ll need later in life. Early work experiences teach reliability, financial intelligence, self-control and help people learn to deal with adult situations. But Monaco, who plans to attend Harvard, isn’t fazed by her lack of work experience. “Maybe I have missed out on a couple of life skills,” she said. “But I don’t think it will harm me in any way.” 25. What is the trend of American teenagers? A. They are becoming lazy. B. They are becoming keen on doing holiday jobs. C. They are focusing more on studies than on jobs. D. They are becoming particular about holiday jobs. 26. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. The reasons for teenagers giving up work. B. The fierce competition teenagers face. C. The structure of America’s workforce. D. The effects of America’s weak economy. 27. What’s Shannon Reed’s attitude towards the new trend? A. Uncaring B. Favorable C. worried D. Doubtful 31. What does the underlined word “fazed” in the last paragraph mean? A. motivated B. helped C. bothered D. confused D Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways. I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they explored across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just three months after the assassination(刺杀) of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles were exactly what the country needed to refresh itself. Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with our spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It’s also a great source of inspiration. 32. Music has magical power because it_________. A. is a kind of language B. can be played much louder than words C. receives a personal radio signal D. can influence a person’s spirit 33. What can we learn about the Beatles from the passage? A. They appeared at a special time in American politics. B. They are not accepted by modern American people. C. They were the biggest band in American history. D. They represented the roots of American culture. 34. Music influences people in the following ways except ________. A. touching and inspiring people B. transporting people form one place to another C. allowing people to express their emotions D. connecting the listener and the composer mentally 32. What does the writer suggest people do in the last paragraph? A. Create vivid pictures. B. Enjoy drinking in spare time. C. Relax and listen to their favorite music. D. Notice everything happening around. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Why is volunteering important? When it comes to service work, it is important to realize that the actual goal should be getting the most out of your volunteering work. 36 Gaining new/social experiences. Volunteering allows students to get involved with new things and develop social and academic skills that couldn’t be learned in a classroom environment. 37 Giving back and helping others. Volunteers create better environments for others---they create healthier communities and they brighten lives. Jil, a senior student, had been a volunteer in her community(社区) for more than three years. 38 “They always tell me how great we sound and how they wish they had taken time to learn an instrument in their youth.” Creating connections with people. 39 Not only does the volunteer work you do show who you are as a person, but it reflects many positive qualities that possible employers and admission officers want to see. Volunteering allows you to meet a wide variety of people from all sorts of walks of life. 40 Volunteering isn’t one of the most attractive jobs, but it is one of the most beneficial and uplifting(令人振奋的). It’s taking some time out of your day to help others. Volunteer work makes us feel good. It builds self-confidence and lifts up the spirits. A. Building career choices. B. Raising the spirits. C. Volunteering means a lot more. D. Building relationships with people is very important. E. Volunteering is an excellent way to improve your independence. F. She volunteers by performing in concerts for senior citizens. G.
