I got to know this from a musical soul. The other day I was feeling quite 36 , having just been laid off from my job. With so many 37 to pay, I was wondering what was going to happen to my family. I got off the bus when I heard piano music and singing rising above the noise of the 38 . I walked a bit slower, trying to find out where it was coming from. Through the 39 I saw a young lady sitting at a piano with a box next to her. She was singing songs about love and her sweet voice 40 me a bit. Then I stood there watching her playing, thinking that it must take 41 to perform on her own in front of hundreds of people she didn’t know. She might have felt my 42 for she occasionally looked in my direction. By now I was telling myself that I could at least tell her how good she sounded. I walked 43 and put some money in her box and she expressed her thanks with a smile on her face. I asked her 44 , “Why are you playing the piano in the middle of this crowded place?” She explained to me that she sees so many 45 people in the world that she is trying to relieve the pain by 46 motivational music. Instead of continuing my way home, I said to her, “I have been going through a 47 time lately, but you’ve made me 48 again.” “I’m happy that I could be 49 to you,” she replied. “Why are you so sad?” I told her my story and said, “I’m not so 50 about what to do….” “You see, here’s the 51 ,” she responded. “When you were walking, your head was down.” She looked me in the eyes and went on, “Don’t look defeated, because 52 comes in different ways and if your head is down you might never see it. You should 53 more … lift your head up.” I was really 54 by what she said! I did hold my head up and soon got through the difficult time. So 55 in trouble, just face it bravely and you're sure to overcome your difficulty sooner or later. ( )36. A. lonely B.awful C.dizzy D. breathless ( )37. A. fees B.bills C. fines D. prices ( )38. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development. ( )56.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1? A.Children have a better memory than grown-ups. B.Poem reading is a good way to learn words. C.People remember well what they learned in childhood D.Stories for children are easy to remember. ( )57. The author explains the law of overlearning by __________. A. using examples B. presenting research findings C. making a comparison D. setting down general rules ( )58. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is _________. A. a skill to deal with math problems B. a result of overlearning C. a special case of cramming D. a basic step towards advanced studies ( )59. What is the author's opinion on cramming? A. It increases students' learning interest. B. It leads to failure in college exams. C. It's possible to result in poor memory. D. It's helpful only in a limited way. B It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is “You can’t”. Look around you. With very few exceptions (例外), either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new. Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeeded. Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources in the form of time and money so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper(成功). ( )60. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that _______. A. mistakes are unnecessary for development B. mistakes are better than not trying C. it’s common for people to make mistakes D. we are afraid of trying new things ( )61. The underlined word “eliminate” means _______. A. dismiss B. avoid C. accept D. solve ( )62. According to the article, one thing you should pay attention to about making mistakes is ____. A. avoiding making the same mistakes B. accepting the punishment willingly C. trying things out one by one D. taking consequences into account ( )63. What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake? A. Never mind, I can always try again. B. I’d better stay out of trouble. C. Great! Now I can learn something. D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset. C Searching for airfares (飞机票价) often seems like a game that passengers are bound to lose. Prices change from day to day, even minute to minute. Looking through multiple websites for the best deal can be a big challenge. Even when you do book, there’s no guarantee that you are going to get the best price. “You just don’t know when to pull the trigger. It’s not like buying anything else I can think of,” said George Hobica, founder of Airfarewatchdog.com. Harriet Levy paid $179 for a recent round-trip flight on American Airlines between New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sitting just one row behind her, Shirley Harrison paid $215. A few rows back, Ellis and Dianne Traub paid $317 each. There were at least 12 fares on the flight, ranging from $169 to $360. There’s no reason for it, Harrison said. Fares can fluctuate(波动)significantly in just a few hours. One Delta flight from New York to Los Angeles jumped from $755 to $1,143 from a Friday to Saturday in late April, then fell to $718 on Sunday. The flight was one of a dozen the Associated Press followed over three months for a vacation between July 16 and 22. The number one finding: avoid booking tickets on weekends. It’s the most expensive time to buy. There’s no way to guarantee the best fare. But before booking, travelers should pay attention to this additional advice: • Book on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That’s when airlines most often offer sales. • Buy in advance, but not too early. The best time is four to six weeks before traveling. In general, prices for any given flight are highest eight to 10 weeks and two to three weeks in advance. • Make use of social media. Airlines are giving more benefits like exclusive (独家) sales to travelers who interact (互动) with them on Twitter and Facebook. Those specials are often gone within hours. • The so-called discount (折扣) airlines – JetBlue, Air-Tran, Southwest and Frontier – adjust their fares less frequently than other airlines, so you can feel more confident that the price will stay the same. But their prices aren’t always the lowest. Researching multiple airlines’ fares is the only way to get a good deal. ( )64. What can we infer from the first sentence of the text? A. It’s difficult for passengers to get the best price. B. Airlines often play games with passengers. C. Passengers are unable to search for airfares. D. Airfares are set in different situations. ( )65. The underlined phrase “pull the trigger” in Paragraph 3 probably means _______. A. start searching B. get the highest price C. make a purchase D. get on board the plane ( )66. By using a lot of figures, the author intends to _______. A. show there is standard price for every single airline B. prove airfares can vary widely C. guarantee passengers a low price D. discover the rules behind airfares ( )67. Passengers are advised to book flights _______. A. several months before traveling B. on special websites C. in the middle of the week D. with airlines which are famous for offering discount prices D Scientific experts from around the world are genuinely predicting that 3 years from now, all life on Earth could well finish. Some are saying it’ll be humans that set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it’ll be God himself who presses the stop button... Seven reasons are going about why the world will end in 2012 and netizens have started a discussion in the forum(论坛). 1.Mayan Calendar The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things: Building highly accurate astrological(占星术的)equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins. Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it’s likely they’ve got the end of the world right as well. 2. Sun Storms Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made an extremely discovery: our sun is a bit of conflict. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic (循环的), and it’s supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, and it’s been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it will reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012. 3. The Atom Smasher Scientists in Europe have been building the world’s largest particle accelerator (粒子加速器). Basically it’s a 27km tunnel designed to break atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the device has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it’s properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They’re predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be squeezed into a super-dense drop the size of a basketball. 4. The Bible says… If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn’t bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good and Evil, has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings. 5. Super Volcano Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple --- it’s sitting on top of the world’s biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we’re many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and suddenly moving the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang. 6. The Physicists This one is case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berkley University have been dealing with the numbers and they have determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they’re claiming their calculations proof that we’re all going to die, very soon --- while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent --- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs. 7. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG! We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic(磁的)field that shields us from most of the sun’s radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a bad habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so – and right now we’re about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for ups to 100 years. The result is enough UV(紫外线的)outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches. ( )68. Some people are convinced of Mayans’ prediction about the end of the world probably because _________. A. they had stone astrological equipment B. they could get close to the lunar moon C. they calculated the lunar cycle highly accurately D. they were the first group to predict things ( )69.What does the writer mean by “religious folks are getting in on the act as well” ( Para. 6 )? A. Scientists do their research among the religious people. B. Religious people are taking action to solve the problem. C. Religions come up with different views from the scientists. D. Religions also have predictions about the end of the world. ( )70.What would the passage probably be if it’s to be continued? A. Worst effects. B. Possible solutions. C. Humans’ measures. D. Netizens’(网民) discussion. 第五部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填上最恰当的单词。 Frederick M.Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on many public issues. He says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world. Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk. Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job.But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors. Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom.Now, two-thirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break.Someone must watch the kids. But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement.Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose significant ground in the summertime. A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boring work.Rather, it should allow time-pressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons.Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts.Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated. For most students, they like the teachers who are quite learned, cool, talkative and humorous. They also admire those who love teaching and are strict in their work. If teachers love their students and are always ready to help them, students will most admire them. What’s more, among popular teachers are the ones who are fond of communicating with students and know what their favorites are. As far as I’m concerned, I love teachers who are sports fans because I like playing basketball badly and I’m on the school team as a top player for two years. Were a teacher an excellent basketball player, we would be good friends by playing games and get as much experience as possible. Although there are some teachers who you don’t like, we should respect all the teachers and must not say anything impolite about our teachers. It is they who not only help us learn more knowledge but also teach us how to be a real man. 听力原文 第一节 第二节 (Text 6) M: We’ve just moved into a house. W: Really? Congratulations! M: Thank you, and we want to buy a new television set. W: What kind of television set do you want to buy? M: A color TV set, of course, but I’m not sure about the size. Maybe we should buy a big one. If we buy a small one, we might have to change it in a few years’ time for a bigger one. That would be a waste of money. What’s your opinion? W: In my opinion, I don't think it’s necessary to buy a very big one. M: Any reason? W: Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn’t very big. If you put in a very big television, it will be bad for your eyes, and a small TV set can still pick up good programmes. M: Mm, that’s quite sure. I’ll think about it. W: You’d better make a quick decision because the price may go up soon. (Text 7) M: Today, let’s talk about certain countries of the world and about the languages which the people of these countries speak. First of all, in what countries of the world is Englsih spoken? W: English is spoken in Britain, the United States, Canada, and Austrilia. M: Where is Spanish spoken? W: Spanish is spoken in all the important countries of South America except Brazil. What language is spoken in Brazil? M: Portuguese is spoken in Brazil. W: What language is spoken in France, Germany, Russia? M: In France, the people speak French, in Germany they speak German, in Russia, Russian. W: These are all improtant languages. Of course, there are also Italian, Japanese, and Chinese. English is perhaps the most popular language in the world today and people in schools everywhere study English. Spanish is almost equally spoken everywhere without Central and South America. Frence is a beautiful and popular language. Languages change, of course and their importance changes with the importance of the nations they represent. When a nation becomes more important and more powerful, its languages grow in importance. When a nation become less powerful, its language naturally decreases in importance. (Text 8) W: Sue, what are your plans for the weekend? M: I do not know for sure. I am thinking of seeing a film. W: Oh, no. that’s too boring, sitting there still and watching for hours. M: Do you have any good suggestions? W: What about joining us in going to the seashore? We have planned it for quite a while. We can have a lot of fun there. Say swim, surf, play volleyball, barbecue, enjoy the sunshine, etc. Wow, I can’t wait any longer. M: Sounds great! It looks like a sunny weekend. It could be fun going there. W: Absolutely. Come and join us. M: Okay. Should I bring anything? W: Take your hat with you so you won’t get burnt. M: Got it! (Text 9) M: Hi, Jenny. Is it true you are moving to London? W: Yes, it is. M: What made you decide to do that? W: Work, mainly. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a job there. M: You are probably right. But where are you going to live? W: I hope I will find a flat to share with somebody. That’ll be cheaper. M: Yes, that’s a good idea. Are you taking your dog with you? W: No, I don't think so. My parents have offered to take care of him, and I don't think he’d be happy in the city. M: You are probably right. But aren’t you afraid of moving to such a big place, especially after living in a small village? W: Not really. I think I’ll enjoy myself. There’s so much to do there. I expect I won’t miss the countryside much and I can always come back and visit. M: Well, I just hope you’ll invite me to stay when you get settled. W: Of course I will. (Text 10) Deep Springs is an American college. It is an unusual college. It is high in the White Mountains in California not in college town. The campus is a collection of old buildings with no beautiful classrooms. The only college-like thing about Deep Springs is its library. Students can borrow from the 17,000 books 24 hours a day. The library is never crowded as there are only 24 excellent boy students at the college. And there are only 5 professors. These teachers believe in the idea of the college. They are not well paid. In fact, their salaries are only about 9,000 dollars a year. The college gives the teachers and students something more important than money. There is no place like Deep Springs. Students are there to learn and they cannot run away from problems because there is no place to escape to. At most colleges students can close their books and go to a film. They can go out to restaurants or to parties, but the students in Deep Springs have completely difficult activities. They can talk to each other or their teachers. They might go out for a walk in the desert. Deep Springs is far from the world of restaurants and cinemas. There is not even a television set on the campus.查看更多
