B Schools across the world are trying to come up with solutions to keep students active. Some are replacing traditional classroom chairs with exercise balls or standing desks. At Ward Elementary School in Winston, North Carolina, students have adopted a new program that requires riding fixed bikes while reading. “Read and Ride” is the creation of school counselor Scott Ertl, who came up with the idea while he was exercising and reading at the gym. Believing it would be a fun way to convince students to become more active, he placed one in the corner of his classroom and encouraged them to use it during independent reading classes. It was so popular that Ertl decided to add more bikes and offer the “Read and Ride” program to the entire school. Today Ward Elementary has a dedicated exercise room filled with bikes that can be used by students while completing their daily reading assignments. Besides making reading more fun, the program also helps students exercise at a comfortable pace without the pressure that comes with regular sports-related activities. It is also a perfect way to release energy during days when the weather is not helpful to outdoor activities. However, the program’s academic benefits are the most important. A year after Read and Ride was introduced at Ward Elementary School, students actively involved in the program demonstrated an astonishing 83% reading proficiency. Those that had not taken advantage of the exercise bikes tested at a much lower, 41%. Though the substantial improvement in academic achievement cannot all be attributed to programs like “Read and Ride”, experts believe they are a significant contributor. That’s because studies have shown that physical activity stimulates(刺激) brain cells and helps prepare it for learning. As word of the difference made by this easy to execute exercise program spreads, don’t be surprised to find schools across the country adopt “Read and Ride” for their students. 24. What is the new program at Ward Elementary School? A. Kids sit at desks for long while reading. B. Kids exercise balls and read at the gym. C. Kids ride bikes as they read. D. Kids do outdoor activities during lessons. 25. How do the students at Ward Elementary School benefit from the program? A. They exercise with high pressure. B. They feel reading fun and learn better. C. They improve their sense of competition. D. They are instructed to read at the same pace.[] 26. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. The program may be more and more popular. B. Schools doubt whether the program is available. C. Physical activities prevent kids from learning more. D. The school achievement depends wholly on the program. 27. What would be the best title of the passage? A. “Read and Ride” Program B. Traditional Teaching Should Be Banned C. How to Help Kids Focus on Their Studies D. Kids Need to Release Energy C British children’s writer Roald Dahl ate chocolates and sweets “pretty much every mealtime”, remembers daughter Ophelia Dahl. After dinner, whether dining alone or entertaining guests, Dahl would pass around a little red plastic box full of Mars Bars, Milky Ways, Maltesers, Kit Kats and much more. He knew the history of all the sweets and could tell you exactly when they were invented. 1937 was a big year when Kit Kats (his favorite), Rolos, and Smarties (his dog, chopper’s favorite) were invented. He wrote a history of chocolate, lecturing schoolchildren to commit such dates to memory, such as 1928 when “Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut Bar popped up on the scene”, saying. “Don’t bother with the Kings and Queens of England. All of you should learn these dates instead. Perhaps the Headmistress will see from now on that it becomes part of the major teaching in this school.” According to Dahl, the Golden Years of Chocolate were 1930-1937. In 1930, Roald Dahl was 14 years old. He was a student at Repton, a famous boys’ boarding school in England. It was a tough environment: Those in authority were more interested in controlling than educating the students. Ironically, it was at this difficult period that chocolate became Dahl’s passion. Near Repton was a Cadbury chocolate factory. Every so often, Cadbury would send each schoolboy a sampler box of new chocolates to taste and grade. They were using the students—“the greatest chocolate bar experts in the world” to test out their new inventions. This was when Dahl’s imagination took flight. He pictured factories with inventing rooms with pots of chocolate and fudge(软糖) and “all sorts of other delicious fillings bubbling away on the stoves”. “It was lovely dreaming those dreams… when I was looking for a plot for my second book for children, I remembered those little cardboard boxes and the newly-invented chocolates inside them, and I began to write a book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” For the record, Roald Dahl did not like chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream. He said, “I prefer my chocolate straight.” 28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To introduce the main topic—Roald Dahl. B. To introduce Dahl’s love for chocolates. C. To introduce main character’s daily life. D. To introduce some important characters. 29. What can we infer from the passage about Roald Dahl? A. He treated himself with various chocolates after dinner secretly. B. He has a good knowledge of chocolate, especially its history. C. He used to lecture schoolchildren of a boys’ boarding school. D. He only wrote some books related to the history of chocolate. 30. What happened during the Golden Years of Chocolate? A. It was a great time for children to get educated. B. Those years stopped Dahl’s interest in chocolate. C. Students could become chocolate experts then. D. Roald Dahl’s passion for chocolate was lit up then.[] 31. __________ gave Roald Dahl inspiration to write Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A. The dreams about chocolates B. Factories with chocolate and fudge C. Those boxes with chocolates D. Chocolate cakes and ice cream D Congratulations, March, April and May babies, you score high on the hyperthymia scale—which is actually good. Hyperthymia is general optimism—the ability to see every down as a beginning to an up, every market crash as a run-up to a boom. But that comes at a price: spring babies are also easier to be affected by the opposite of hyperthymia: clinical depression. Ground zero for the condition—according to a massive study of 58,000 subjects in the U.K. in 2012—is among people born in May. November babies have the lowest depression rates. It’s mostly glad news for June, July and August babies. No SAD(Abbreviation for seasonal affective disorder: a medical condition in which a person does not have much energy and enthusiasm during the winter because of the reduced period of natural light. ) for you—at least nothing caused by the light levels after your birth, though there may be some impact from mom having carried you in December, January and February. Summer babies have some of the same hyperthymic characteristics as spring babies, but that can be offset by cyclothymia(躁郁情绪)—rapid cycling between high and low moods. Still, that’s probably not a warning sign of bipolar disorder; bipolar diagnoses are lowest among babies born in August. For people who believe in astrology(占星术), the general calmness of fall babies seems to provide evidence that at least the sign of Libra—the well-balanced scales—has connection with it. It doesn’t of course, but whether the cause is the abundant nutrients available at harvest time, or the fact that the long nights and seasonal illness of winter have not yet appeared, people born in fall not only enjoy low levels of depression, but are similarly less likely to develop bipolar disorder. The one glitch in the autumn-born: they do have a tendency to irritability. Buckle up, winter babies, things could get rough. Among the challenges facing people with winter birthdates are higher levels of schizophrenia(精神分裂症), bipolar disorder, SAD and depression. That’s terrible, but there is something to make up for that: winter babies are less irritable than those born in fall. What’s more, according to a small 2015 study of 300 celebrities, January and February are the right months to be born if you want to be famous since those months correlate with creativity and imaginative problem-solving. 32. Which statement is true according to the article? A. Spring babies are always very happy. B. Fewer August babies get bipolar disorder. C. Fall babies have the highest depression rates. D. Winter babies are the most fortunate. 33. The phrase “Buckle up” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ________. A. Attention B. Don’t worry C. Congratulations D. Don’t give up 34. In which month you should give birth to your baby if you hope he or she is creative? A. January. B. May. C. August. D. November. 35. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage? A. Which is the best birth month? B. Different birth months, different characters C. Give birth to your baby in a proper month D. Diseases you should pay attention to 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Third-Culture Kids Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid! The term “third-culture kid” (or TCK) was first used in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own. 36 About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals. 37 In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max, for example, experienced this feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid. 38 While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships. For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years, Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born. 39 She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home. While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized(理想化的)image children have of “home”. 40 As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places. A. Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy. B. In general, they often reach excellent academic results. C. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity. D. However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle. E. Their experience abroad helps them to understand cultural differences better. F. Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends. G. Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid. Years ago, I lost my sight completely.
