US author Henry Rollins once wrote: “Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.” Indeed, in the eyes of artists, loneliness never seems to go out of style. There are paintings that portray loneliness, songs that are inspired by loneliness, and many works of literature that center around this theme.
In the eyes of UK economist Rachel Reeves, however, loneliness is far from romantic . Instead, it’s a “giant evil” that’s become a serious problem in the country.
So just how serious is it? On Jan 17, UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country’s very first “Minister for Loneliness”. Her job is to tackle the loneliness that the country’s been feeling – a problem which, according to UK g
overnment research, is affecting more than 9 million people in the country, and is more harmful to one’s physical and mental health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
And the problem hasn’t just appeared recently. Back in 2014, the UK was given the title of the “loneliness capital of Europe” by The Telegraph. A survey carried out by the newspaper found that British people were less likely to get to know their neighbors or build strong relationships with people than those from other European countries.
“There is something British about wanting to deal with problems yourself.” Christian Guy, director of the Centre for Social Justice think-tank (智囊团), told The Telegraph.
But this doesn’t mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we’re all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever.
What we need, according to Kim Leadbetter, sister of the late UK politician Jo Cox, is to have “proper human connections”. “Our lives nowadays are so busy. We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings,” Leadbetter said at an event last year.
But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be ashamed or intimidated (吓倒) by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings, songs, and literary works wouldn’t even exist. And “evil” or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being human.
59. What can we learn about the UK’s loneliness problem?
A. The government is working to solve the problem.
B. More than half of British people suffer from loneliness.
C. The UK became the loneliest country in the world in 2014.
D. British people communicate less with their neighbors than ever.
60. According to the text, social loneliness _______.
A. does more harm mentally than physically
B. didn’t attract the public’s attention until recently
C. is mainly caused by the wide use of the internet
D. has become a problem worldwide
61. What does Leadbetter suggest doing to cope with loneliness?
A. Making more phone calls to our friends.
B. Stopping the use of electronic products.
C. Interacting with the people around us face to face more often.
D. Accepting its existence calmly.
62. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A. Loneliness is a giant evil of society.
B. Only artists can appreciate the beauty of loneliness.
C. Loneliness is just a normal part of our life.
D. It is hard to find a solution to social loneliness.

Since English biologist Charles Darwin (1809 –1882) published On the Origin of Species in 1859, scientists have vastly improved their knowledge of natural history. However, a lot of information is still the subject of speculation, and scientists can still only make educated guesses at certain things.
One subject that they guess about is why some 400 million years ago, animals in the sea developed limbs (肢) that allowed them to move onto and live on land.
Recently, an idea that occurred to the US paleontologist Alfred Romer a century ago became a hot topic once again.
Romer thought that tidal pools might have led to fish gaining limbs. Sea animals would have been forced into these pools by strong tides. Then, they would have been made either to adapt to their new environment close to land or die. The fittest among them grew to accomplish the transition from sea to land.
Romer called these earliest four-footed animals “tetrapods” . Science has always thought that this was a credible theory, but only recently has there been strong enough evidence to support it.
Hannah Byrne is an oceanographer at Uppsala University in Sweden. She announced at the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Oregon, US, on Feb 15 that by using computer software, her team had managed to link Romer’s theory to places where fossil deposits of the earliest tetrapods were found.
According to the magazine Science, in 2014, Steven Balbus, a scientist at the University of Oxford in the UK, calculated that 400 million years ago, when the move from land to sea was achieved, tides were stronger than they are today. This is because the planet was 10 percent closer to the moon than it is now.
The creatures stranded in the pools would have been under the pressure of “survival of the fittest”, explained the UK’s University of Bangor ocean scientist Mattias Green. As he told Science: “After a few days in these pools, you become food or you run out of food … the fish that had large limbs had an advantage because they could flip themselves back in the water”.
As is often the case, however, there are others who find the theory less convincing. Cambridge University paleontologist Jennifer Clark, speaking to Nature magazine, seemed unconvinced. “It’s only one of many ideas for the origin of land-dwelling tetrapods, any or all of which may have been a part of the answer,” she said.
63 . Who first proposed the theory that fish might have gained limbs because of tidal pools?
A. Charles Darwin. B. Alfred Romer.
C. Hannah Byrne. D. Steven Balbus.
64 . Why were tides stronger 400 million years ago than they are today according to Steven Balbus?
A. Earth moved faster than it does today.
B. Earth was closer to the sun than it is today.
C. Earth was closer to the moon than it is today.
D. Earth had larger oceans than it does today.
65. What is the focus of the article?
A. The proposal of a new scientific theory.
B. The arguments over a scientific theory.
C. Some new evidence to support a previous theory.
D. A new discovery that questions a previous theory.

Fall of Giants is a historical novel published in 2010 by Welsh-born author Ken Follett. It is the first part of the Century Trilogy (三部曲)which follows five interrelated families throughout the course of the 20th century. The first book covers notable events such as World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s voting rights. The sequel Winter of the World covers World War II and was published in September 18, 2012. The third book, Edge of Eternity, covers the Cold War and was published in 2014.
The overall theme of the novel revolves around common people trying, and many times succeeding, in throwing off the yokes so often placed on them by a society (largely focused on Britain and Russia) dominated by the landed aristocracy.
There are several key themes in this novel. Follett has done a remarkable job in linking several key aspects in world history at this point. They include the causes of the 1st World War, the collapse of Imperial Russia, and Germany's role in the continuance of a bloody war that led to economic collapse and the rise of Hitler
Regarding Russian history, he portrays Lenin's role in the rise of Bolsheviks as a ploy (手段) of the German intelligence service as an attempt to divide and conquer Russian resistance on the eastern front. He does not clearly explain the rise of Stalin as Lenin died. This may be better explained in the second volume(he does this at about page 500 of Volume 2, which seems to understate the role of Stalin in Europe and US history)
Throughout the novel, several chapters are devoted to the rise of women’s rights in Britain and role of the Labour party in promoting issues affecting worker safety in a mining accident in Wales
Through these chapters, he displays the considerable differences in social status of the miners and the owners of the mines in quality of life health and education. With tragic accuracy, Follett reviews the misery and suffering of soldiers in the trench warfare of the time, including poison gas, useless charges against artillery(炮) and machine gun posts etc.The war continues, thousands are slaughtered and the so-called leaders continued to promote it as a victorious exercise. Follett focuses on how industrial interests on both sides benefited from the war, continuing it as factory production went up and the dead were brought back to England.
The book explores background of Germany at the time, the costs of their endless efforts to "win" leading to a loss that later was a cause for a forlorn corporal(下士), Adolf Hitler, to seek his own revenge for the economic devastation of the Weimar Republic under the settlement treaty.
The characters and their extended families find their fortunes changing for the better and for the worse due to both their interactions with each other and the effects of the First World War.
66. What's the main Idea the novel Fall of Giants, wants to express__________?

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Factory farming is a type of farming that involves raising a huge number of livestock(牲畜) in comparatively tinier enclosed spaces, with a view to supplying them to the livestock market. It took root in the later part of the 19th century. On the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, the inventions of antibiotics and pesticides were increasing in number, which made it possible to practice factory farming. And gradually, with better farming methods, livestock were able to be raised indoors leading to mass production in a shorter while. Nowadays, according to reliable sources, more than 50% of the livestock are produced using this concept.
Factory farming is one of the most important food production methods around the world today because it has a lot of advantages. For example, there are huge numbers of mouths to feed, and mass production leads to the purchase of poultry(家禽) and the related items. Since the items aren’t priced too high for consumers to afford, people appreciate buying them in a large number. And as more and more livestock are artificially raised, more and more chicken, beef and eggs are out for sale. The purchase rate is higher and despite being reasonably priced, the produce fetches a profit for the farms. In addition, since the business is enormous and needs as many hands as possible to increase the food produce, an equal number of staff are required for work, which results in a growth in the related jobs.
However, there are also disadvantages of factory farming. For instance, the animals are artificially bred, and since the procedure is not natural, the end products could be of poor quality. Antibiotics are injected into cows and hens, making them more unlikely to suffer from dirt and disease. As a result, the eggs and meat will not be as good as usual. The products thus obtained are of such low quality, which ultimately affects our health as well. Actually, since the entire production is artificial, the meat is overloaded with hormones and drugs, and the bacteria develop resistance to the antibiotics, which is why many diseases remain untreated. Worse still, the animals’ waste can pollute the water and air, causing extensive damage to the environment. It may also lead to harmful emissions and contribute to the already increasing global warming.
Because of the above advantages and disadvantages of factory farming, the concept has been
a subject of massive debate all over the world, wherever this practice has been employed. Supporters of this concept argue that it does provide enough food for the increasing population and is more affordable. However, unfavorable opinions suggest that there are better ways of producing food, rather than subjecting animals to this suffering. The debate has been going on for quite a while, with no one being able to gain the upper hand.

One possible version:
A private school located in Shanghai provided low-quality food for students, raising the concern of administrative departments. They conducted an investigation and demanded food criteria among schools be enforced.
Campus food safety is of vital importance to students. On the one hand, safe food is beneficial to students’ healthy growth, which lays a solid foundation for their sustainable development. On the other hand, if they were offered low-quality food, they couldn’t keep fit on campus, making their parents worried a lot and compromising their academic performances.
Ensuring students having access to safe food is a top priority. To begin with, the government should make stricter rules. Besides, the school leaders should attach importance to the issue. What’s more, schools are supposed to invite parents and students to supervise school canteens regularly. Only when we join forces can campus food safety be guaranteed.
In conclusion, we can’t emphasize the importance of campus food safety too much.

M: You’ve been doing well with your diet, Diane. I’m proud of you. You never eat junk food
anymore.
W: I decided to follow your advice. I used to order delivery like most people in the office, but you inspired me to eat healthier meals. (2)
Text 3
M: It’s very cold in here. I’m going to turn the heater on to warm this place up a little.
W: Why do you think I’m drinking hot chocolate? Here, take this blanket. The heater isn’t working right now. (3)
Text 4
W: Are you still thinking of going into journalism right away, or are you going to do some traveling instead?
M: I’m getting started on my degree in the fall. I want to continue my education right after we finish high school. (4)
Text 5
W: You see this painting? It looks like a five-year-old painted it.
M: It’s not very complex, I agree. (5) It could use a little more color, too.
Text 6
M: Wow! Nice place! I’ve never been to this part of town before.
W: Thanks. This area’s called the East End. (6) It isn’t very central, but I chose it because I could afford more space here.
M: Yeah, you have a whole extra room! (6)
W: I know! I use it for work.
M: I thought you worked in an office downtown.
W: My company lets me work one day a week from home.
M: Lucky! You’ve got a great boss and a great apartment. (6) I’m so happy for you! Let’s celebrate! Let me take you to dinner. (7)

W: Jason just emailed me. He’s going to be a little late for the teachers’ meeting this afternoon. That shouldn’t be a problem, though. At least you and I will be there on time, right? (8) George? Hey, George, what’s wrong?
M: Sorry. I’m just really concerned about my brother. He was supposed to come over to my
house for dinner last night, but he never showed up.
W: How often do you see each other?
M: Once a week. We always have dinner on Wednesdays. He hasn’t missed one in over a year.
W: Did you try calling him?
M: Yes, and I left him a voicemail. (9) He doesn’t have a cell phone, so I can’t send him a text.
W: I’m sure he’s fine. Sometimes things come up at the last minute. Your brother sounds like a very responsible person, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
M: OK, you’re probably right. Thanks.

M: I’ve noticed that you have been having trouble in one of your classes. Is there anything I can do to help?
W: Well, Mr. Hobart, I’m struggling to keep up with my math homework. I’m also studying history and chemistry for my other midterms, and math just doesn’t come easy for me. (10)
M: That’s normal. I wasn’t the greatest math student when I was young. You do have some choices, though.
W: Like what?
M: One of them is to take an afterschool class with Mr. Jennings. He’s in charge of the math department.
W: I’ve heard of that. The problem is that I have volleyball practice on Tuesdays and Fridays. It’s really important to me.
M: I see. The other choice is to find a tutor. We have a number of students from our Gifted Program who tutor various subjects for extra credit. (11) It’s during the lunch hour.
W: That would be great. When can I do that? (11)
M: Every Monday and Thursday. Go see Mrs. Lee, and she’ll sign you up. (11) (12)

M: I saw you on the news! You’re a hero! Come on, tell me all the details.
W: Well, I was watching the pool from my chair, like I always do. (13) There was a group of kids taking diving lessons in the deep end. (14)
M: Go on…
W: I guess one of the students hit their head on the diving board, because I saw that someone was sinking to the bottom of the pool.
M: So, what did you do next?
W: I jumped in the pool after their instructor jumped in and brought the kid back to the surface. It was a young girl, and she had swallowed a lot of water.
M: Wow. Did you give her mouth-to-mouth?
W: Of course. Then I told one of the kids to call for an ambulance. (14)
M: Quick thinking!
W: The girl coughed the water up almost immediately, and just like that, it was over. We cleaned the wound and bandaged it up, and the emergency services arrived twenty minutes later. (15)
M: How was she? (16)
W: She had no memory of the past ten minutes. (16) She wanted to go back in the pool. She didn’t even know why her parents were crying.
M: She must have been in shock.

Hi, students! This is Ashley Jacobs, your student government president. (17) I have some important information for everyone about activities on campus this year. I promise that there will be something fun for everyone to do. Do you like sports? I know everyone is a fan of our football
team. And now there are two new teams at school this year. We have added a baseball team and a swim team. (18) Or do you enjoy creative activities? Student government created an art club and a music club for people with artistic abilities. Both of these groups have events all year long. The art club hosts painting nights and trips to the local museum, and the music club goes to see shows at the concert hall. (19) And don’t forget about the school newspaper for all the writers out there! We pass out the paper every week for free on campus. Read it to keep up with all of the school news and activities that I announced. I strongly recommend that you join a student organization. It is an easy way to make good friends and have fun. Please consider joining one of these groups today. (20)
