The next week, from his home in Chicago, he sent her a post card: Remember me please. Do be calling you one of these days. —David. She still has that post card. I am not sure what made her save. Though he already had his heart set on her, she hadn't chosen him yet, at least not deliberately. My father, a salesman for a big electronics company, often told us while we were growing up, it was blind luck that he was at the picnic that day. He was in town to meet with clients and happened to stop by the branch office that Saturday morning to make a call. It was the manager of a local radio station where my mother worked as a writer. “Dave! Glad you’re in town!” he said, and invited him to come right over to their picnic. Later my mother dated him when he was in town. Eventually, one night a few months later, she woke her mother and told her she was going to marry Dave. A few months after the wedding, my father was sent east. They settled in New York, in the house where I grew up. Sometimes I think how time gets us together and puts us in a certain place where we’re faced with one choice or another. We leave behind while others live by the choice we made. We could have lived full of different passions and joys, different problems and disappointments. Sometimes, particularly when I came home late to a sleeping house, my husband and daughter curled around each other. I think about the lives we would not have had if choices had brought us to a different place. And I tremble at the thought that I might have missed this life, this man, this child, this love. 25. A. the author’s father didn’t love her mother B. the author’s mother always made a right choice C. the author’s mother hadn’t decided to marry her father at first D. the author didn’t think her mother should keep her father’s postcard 27. What do we know about the author? A. She misses her former life. B. Time makes her life perfect. C. She values her present life. D. Her life is full of disappointments. C Kanda really doesn't like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he'd rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking us healthy. "I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter," Kanda said. "But they are not always available." So Kanda, who specializes in human-like bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which, he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person's shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, 3.5inches wide, and 10 inches long. A microphone, speaker, and internal camera allow it to communicate. It's even equipped with a smile. Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics. A special speech software provided the robot with a voice. Near a group of parked cars, for example, it might say, "In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parked." They tested the robot on 15 volunteers, 10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old. "Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英)seeds into the air? "The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded, "Yes, I often did that when I was a child.” Although several participants noted the robot's weight, Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience as strange or funny. "I guess people enjoy new technologies, "he said. Just like a human partner, Kanda's bot isn't perfect. It's not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions, it can't really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried. Despite its limits, Kanda was comforted by the bot's presence. "I felt a kind of sense of being with someone, "he said, "particularly when it spoke." 28. Why does Kanda have the idea of developing a robotic walking partner? A. Because he wants someone to accompany him while walking. B. Because he has never developed a robot like a parrot. C. Because his family are unwilling to walk with him. D. Because he is crazy about developing robots. 29. What characteristic does the robot have? A. It can "speak" and "see". B. It can walk like a human being. C. It can communicate with people freely. D. It is much more humorous than a real person. 30. What is necessary for the robot to function? A.A small size. B.A boxy shape. C.A human partner. D.A speech software. 31. What is Kanda most likely to do about his robot next? A. To make it more convenient to carry. B. To improve its conversational skills. C. To enable it to walk in heavy rain. D. To better its sound system D Technology activists are appealing to tech companies and their leaders to build a future in which the effect of machinery on humans is lessened. Some workers have long feared that machines are coming to take away their jobs. Tim O'Reilly, head of a technology advisory service, says it is important for people and machines to work together. “We have to think about not using technology to replace people. Instead,we can make robots do something that was previously impossible for humans.” With more skills, people can work with machines. For example, the ridesharing companies Lyft and Uber use software designed to help human drivers. Most large airplanes are now flown by computers. But passengers will always want a human pilot on the plane. Jonathan Brewer is a trainer at the Network Startup Resource Center. He emphasizes that technology experts must consider how their inventions can help people. They must consider how sensors can warn people an hour before a mudslide takes place. There are other lifesaving devices that cost very little money. What's more, there is not much reason to have machines do difficult work if people enjoy the results of their labor. In 2015 the consulting service McKinsey & Company said machines will someday perform 45 percent of the jobs humans now do. That may be why Brewer supports the idea of universal guaranteed earnings. Under the plan, a small monthly payment would be made to each person, even if they do not work. However, Brewer hopes that people and machines will continue to cooperate. He says there is technology that tells city workers when street lights need to be repaired or when trash cans are full. That means the workers do not need to examine the lights or cans, as many now do. But he said when the technology tells when repairs are needed or containers must be emptied, humans must still provide the service. Many people support technology and the changes it will bring. But many are also starting to think about its effect on humans and how to help people live in a world where machines do so much work. 32. What situation do humans have to face nowadays? A.Machinery is having an increasingly great influence. B.Some workers' job opportunities have been robbed of. C.Some machines are out of control. D.The leaders in big companies never consider their employees' future. 33. What can be inferred from the 2nd paragraph? A.Drivers are not so busy as before with the help of Lyft. B.The software designed by Uber users is very practical. C.Robots can undertake some extremely difficult tasks for us. D.Pilots are not needed any more on planes flown by computers. 34. What would some jobless people be offered according to Brewer? A.Special courses. B.Some money that can cover their basic life. C.Professional training. D.Another job opportunity. 35. What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage? A.To warn us of the threats that machinery will bring us. B.To inform us of the inconvenience that machinery has caused. C.To introduce the way to solve the problem related to machinery. D.To arouse people's concern about the development of technology. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Write an Effective Summary The goal of writing a summary of an article, a chapter, or a book is to offer as accurately as possible the full sense of the original, but in a more condensed(缩减的) form.
