B Students at the Florida high school where 17 people were shot dead in February of 2018 are being asked to wear backpacks. School officials have written to families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High pupils outlining the plans as part of new security measures. They say any students without a clear backpack will be given one at no cost. As well as introducing the transparent backpacks for quicker safety checks, there will also be airport-style metal detectors and school visitors will pass through special gates. “We’re going to man every gate at the school hours and for after-school activities,” said the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Robert W. Runcie. Since the shooting when Nikolas Cruz opened fire killing 17 people, students there have been leading calls for gun reform. Donald Trump has told US politicians he wants tougher laws with “really strong background checks”, while he’s faced anger from anti-gun groups for suggesting training school staff to use firearms. In the last few days, safety at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High has been called into question again after several security breaches(违反). Three students were arrested on Tuesday, two for carrying knives and one for making treats on Snapchat. Some parents have become so worried that they’ve been keeping their children off school. “We’ve got to put things into place now,” Mr. Runcie said. 24. Which is a new security measure of the school? A. Teachers are trained to use firearms. B. Guards are hired to monitor the students. C. Visitors are forbidden to enter the school. D. Students are required to wear clear backpacks. 25. What can we know about the school shooting from the text? A. The gunman was a school staff member. B. One of the victims was named Nikolas Cruz. C. Seventeen people were shot dead on campus. D. Someone unknown broke in and opened fire. 26. Some parents have become worried because ________. What is the student’s attitude toward firearms? A. They call for changes of gun laws. B. They are against the school’s stricter rules. C. They defend their right to possess weapons. D. They approve of Donald Trump’s suggestion C Think of the empty cities in zombie(僵尸)movies. The streets, the shops and the schools still there just like they would be on a normal day, except there are no people to be seen. It is the emptiness that scares you. Now a real-life “ghost city” is being built in the US. But fortunately, it has nothing to do with zombies – it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future. Called CITE – the Center for Innovation(创新), Testing and Evaluation(测评) - the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles (39 square kilometers), it is the size of small US city and sits in the middle of the New Mexico desert. But why do we need an empty city that nobody will call home? The reason is that we can’t afford to test the latest technologies in the cities that we live in – they might not be ready and could cause problems and danger in our everyday lives. “It will be a true laboratory without the problems and safety issues that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired. In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city. Just think about the possibilities-driverless cars can move freely on the streets, homes with robots can be designed and energy sources like nuclear power can also be put to the test. As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. “One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a founder of Singularity University, US, told Fortune magazine. Jones is worried that, even if a technology works perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city. But no matter what it is, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2018. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine. 28. The empty city is being built ________. A. so people can experience the technology of the future B. to try driverless cars and robots in C. to test new technology in D. as a place full of the latest technology 29. Which of the following statements is TRUE about CITE? A. It is located beside the New Mexico desert. B. It was started by Singularity University. C. Things in the city can easily be broken down and built again. D. Anyone can ask to try out their new designs there. 30. According to Jones, ________. A. CITE offers great possibilities for future technology B. new technologies will work perfectly well with the help of CITE C. settings in CITE should be real in order to create the best results D. testing results in CITE may not prove to work in a real city 31. What is the main purpose of this article? A. To explain why CITE could be very helpful. B. To show that CITE has a bright future. C. To explain CITE and problems it may have. D. To offer a good solution that will help to develop future technologies. D Sometimes your expectations don’t survive. But you have to make it through. After a lengthy visa application procedure, I left my father with our dog, jumped on a flight, and there I was in London. Since Europe is an aspiration in my country, I had imagined it as a place where things always worked perfectly. I was alone in dealing with all kinds of problems as they arose, that was alright and this is now I became my own “special person” during my Erasmus exchange. The accommodation I could afford was far from the city. To make things worse, I was new to many things, and definitely an outsider. But it wasn’t an exception to carelessness, I found out. My dorm was in a silent neighborhood. Little did I know that those calm streets would be visited by loud fire trucks…And because of me! That morning, I closed the kitchen door after placing some bread in the toaster. I was still half asleep and looking for what to wear. For some reason, the automatic mechanism of the toaster to push the slices up didn’t work. When I went back to the kitchen. It was full of thick white smoke. Coughing hard, I opened the windows, stepped outside the door for a breath, and then went in again to reach for the fire extinguisher(灭火器). It was the first time I used one, and had to get out of the kitchen to be able to see how to unlock it. It was only then the lire alarm went off! I went in again and made sure I put off the fire. Nothing was like now I planned. A few times I hung out in the school cafeteria, but couldn’t make friends. I went to discover the city, alone. Independence wasn’t something to be ashamed of after all. I wish I had made friends with people, but it turned out that I had to learn I wasn’t in need of others’ company to enjoy life. I tried to make the best of my time, thinking that being alone is a blessing too, just like being with friends is. My international experiences that followed definitely made me more social, but now I know that being alone is not a weakness, nut a part of life embrace. Just like our mistakes, carelessness or bad luck, I can say it was during my time in London that I learnt I was, despite everything, a strong and special person who can cope with(处理)anything that comes her way. 32. What does the underlined words “it wasn’t an exception to carelessness” probably refer to? A. I was careless to cause a fire B. I shouldn’t be careless in a foreign country C. I was supposed to handle hardships abroad on my own D. the accommodation of exchange students is always out-of-the-way 33. How did the author feel about his experience when living abroad by himself? A. Helpless. B. Meaningless. C. Fruitful. D. Regretful. 34. We can learn from the second paragraph that the author ________. A. had expected everything abroad would go smoothly before leaving his country. B. hadn’t been prepared to handle the problems abroad before going C. got his visa without much difficulty D. went abroad with his dog 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. What Made Me Become My Own Hero? B. My Study Experience in the UK C. Being Alone Is Definitely an Awful Thing D. Welcome to our Reading Activity. It is a great honor for me to be here to say something about our activity, the topic of which is “I Love Chinese Classical Poetry”. The activity is aimed at motivating us students to learn Chinese actively(或developing a good habit of reading books)as well as inheriting/passing on Chinese traditional culture. Why I love it is that it has a certain thyme and is written in simple language, making it easy to learn and recite. Besides, it usually conveys true emotions towards family, friends or the country, which can make us acquire various emotional experiences. In my opinion, reading classical poems can improve our writing skills. As we know, it is a treasure of Chinese culture. Only after we learn more Chinese Classical poems will it deepen our understanding of our culture. I hope the activity will be a great success and everyone can learn much from it. That’s all. Thank you. 查看更多
