Now, let's take a look at some of the world's worst buildings. The Torre Velasca The Torre Velasca in Milan is in the centre of Milan(Italy). The tower, which went up in the 1950s, is about 100 metres tall. Its design is actually a modern representation(代表) of a traditional Lombard castle, where the lower parts were narrower than the upper parts. The Mirador Building The Mirador Building in Madrid(Spain)was created by Dutch studio MVRDV and the Spanish architect(建筑师)Blanca Lleó.The building, which is a block of flats, opened in 2005. There is a large rectangular(矩形的)hole in the upper part of it, which is used by the neighbourhood as a meeting area and playground. The Prague TV Tower The Prague TV Tower is in Prague(the capital of the Czech Republic). It stands 216 metres high and looks a bit like a tall, thin space ship. Prague is famous for its architectural beauty, so when the tower was put up in 1985 by architect Vaclav Aulicky and engineer Jiri Kozak, many felt it didn't fit in. The Longaberger Basket Company The Longaberger Basket Company building is in Newark, Ohio(USA). The office block was opened in 1997 and looks like a very large basket. It's got seven floors and two handles(把手)at the top. The handles weigh about 150 tons. It may not be the ugliest building in the world but it's certainly one of the most unusual. 21.According to the text, the Torre Velasca________. A.was created by Blanca Lleó B.is similar to a Lombard castle C.has a history of over 100 years D.is taller than the Prague TV Tower 22.Which of the following buildings might be the Mirador Building? 23.When the Prague TV tower was put up,many people________. A.thought little of it B.liked it very much C.felt that it might fall down easily D.thought that it was totally useless B Buster used to be a lovely dog playing and running on a farm all day. His life had a big change after his handler Will’s presence because Will found he did extremely well in sniffing tests. Will thought Buster had a special talent and decided to let him become a member of RAF police working dogs. Buster began working with Will in 2007, and the pair was sent to Afghanistan’s deadly Helmand province. There, Buster saved countless lives by sniffing out explosive devices (IEDs), as well as weapons. He joined his comrades repeatedly on foot patrols hunting Taliban terrorists and tracking down bombs. He also acted as a useful diplomatic tool, due to his friendly approach to local children. The RAF soon had a long train of children in tow, as Buster drew in his crowd and entertained them. After his glittering service with the RAF, Buster retired in 2011,and died in 2015 at the age of 13 at the home of his handler, Will, in Lincolnshire where he had been enjoying retirement with his handler Will, his wife Tracy and their two dogs who will inherit (继承) their father’s career. Over the course of his career, Buster is thought to have saved more than 1,000 lives. He also helped patrol British bases and searched vehicles at check points, and upon retirement was made the official RAF Police mascot (吉祥物). Buster’s brave exploits were even documented in Will’s book, which was published in January and soon became a best-selling one. Buster completed five tours of duty in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq and earned a row of campaign medals, and it was because of his great efforts in these austere environments full of wars and confrontations that he would be remembered. It was the saving of countless lives by searching out IEDs that saw the honor of official lifetime mascot of the RAF Police bestowed (授予) upon Buster. The RAF police are now planning to commemorate Buster as part of a special event to celebrate RAF Police Working Dogs. 24. Which is NOT the achievement of Buster in Helmand province? A. He succeeded in saving a lot of people. B. He became popular among local children and kept them safe. C. He sniffed out many explosives. D. He was a great helper in hunting Taliban terrorists. 25. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Buster was born at Will’s home in Lincolnshire. B. Buster’s children will also be a member of RAF police working dogs. C. Buster was bestowed the mascot during working in Afghanistan. D. Buster’s death in a campaign is a great loss for the RAF Police. 26. Which word can best replace the underlined word “austere” in the last paragraph? A. Severe. B. Respectable. C. Vast. D. Powerful. 27. What is the passage mainly about? A. A heroic sniffer dog’s legendary life. B. The requirements of being a lifetime mascot. C. Buster’s cooperation with his comrades. D. The love between Will and his dog. C Monty Hempel is a professor of environmental sciences at Redlands University in California. He studies ecological literacy — or eco-literacy, for short. Eco-literacy is the ability to think about and understand the natural processes that make life possible. Monty Hempel says eco-literacy gives people knowledge about environmental problems. But he says it does not always work on getting them to change their behavior. Mr. Hempel wrote part of the Worldwatch Institute’s latest State of the World report. He says in his article, “Some people think that eco-literacy is just a green form of science literacy. And what I have tried to ask is whether that’s enough. In other words, what an ecologically-literate person needs to know might include things like the effect of environmental pollution on ecosystem, the energy systems, and all of those kinds of things that we would call the science of ecology.” “That doesn’t seem to lead to action to protect our environment — to protect our life-support system to the level that we need to. Just knowing a lot about the environment doesn’t mean that we actually act to save it. After all, actions speak louder than knowledge.” He adds that people may not be very worried about environmental problems if they seem far away. “Some people call it psychological distance. A lot of climate issues are worse in the Arctic and most of us don’t spend time in the Arctic. And so, there’s a certain distance. But there’s also a distance that’s happening in the world as it urbanizes — people spending more time in front of screens and less time out in nature. We become, if you will, disconnected from the natural systems that used to be the key to success for a human being.” To help children discover the wonders of nature, he adds that children should learn about nature in school. But he also points out we have a high mountain for people to climb from knowledge to action. 28. From what Monty Hempel says in Paragraph 3, we learn that _____________. A. knowledge on environmental protection is not enough B. knowledge that children learn at school is useless C. eco-literacy can help people understand how nature works D. people with enough knowledge will protect the environment well 29. What is especially important for environmental protection in Mr. Hempel’s opinion? A. Knowledge. B. Action. C. Green living. D. Psychological distance. 30. Mr. Hempel thinks people show no concern about some environmental problems because _____. A. they lack knowledge on environmental protection B. they have no awareness of environmental protection C. some environmental problems are not worse at all D. some environmental problems happen far away 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Experts think it is the best way to learn nature in school. B. Climbing a high mountain is a good way to exercise well. C. Changing people’s attitude to environmental protection is hard. D. Knowledge can help children take action to protect the environment. D Since 50 years ago, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines. Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michelle Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated (展示) a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts. In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts. “Our brain has billions of nerve cells. These send signals through the spinal cord (脊髓) to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says, “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.” The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp (头皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain. Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.” He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time. 32. What is BCI? A. BCI is a technology that can link the human brain with computers. B. BCI is a technology that can help to update computer systems. C. BCI is a technology that can help the disabled to recover. D. BCI is a technology that can control a person's thoughts. 33. How did Tavella operate the wheelchair in the laboratory? A. By controlling his muscles. B. By talking to the machine. C. By using his mind. D. By moving his hand. 34. Which of the following shows the path of the signals described in Paragraph 5? A. scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair B. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair C. computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair D. cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair 35. Which of the following would be the BEST title for the text? A. Switzerland, the BCI Research Center B. New Findings about How the Human Brain Works C. Robotic Vehicles Could Help to Cure Brain Injuries D. BCI Could Mean More Freedom for the Disabled 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Negative thoughts we have about ourselves can destroy our spirits. Many of us have problems with negative thoughts. The negative thoughts lead to bad feelings and they make you believe that the bad things you are suffering are actually true. In short, they bring your focus on your failures, which will make you depressed. What can you do to avoid negative thoughts to affect you? 36 . ◎Recognize that actions always follow beliefs Whatever you believe, you'll experience more of them. 37 . So start believing the best about yourself and believe that you're a valuable person. ◎Picture the good things If you want to change the negative tapes playing in your heads, you have to imagine yourself positively—that means judging yourself right. 38 . How would that look? Draw it in your mind and expand it. ◎ 39 You may talk to yourself with statements like "if only” or "what if". The former keeps reminding you of the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past, and the future isn't here yet. ◎Develop positive views Instead of always putting yourself down in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. Tell yourself "I am able. I'm good at it. " instead of saying "I'm not good enough': 40 . Thinking poorly gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide, today, to turn off the negative channel in your mind and develop your true possibilities. A. Forget the past B. Live in the moment C. Here are some suggestions D. Make friends with optimistic people E. Imagine a picture about yourself F. Always keep positive, rather than say something negative G. The two-year-old small horse was taught by her trainers to help blind people in the same way as guide dogs. She stops when she crosses busy roads or when the roads are in bad condition. She can get in and get out of a car, go up and down stairs and is completely house trained. And as a guide animal, Panda is allowed to go with her owner Ann Edie in shopping centers and supermarkets. Panda is one of the only two small horses in the world that have been trained for the job. Her American trainers at the Guide Horse Foundation say that small horses often make better guides than dogs. Some blind people grow up with the animals and some want a partner that will live longer than a dog. This kind of guide horse is especially trained for these people.
