What should I do? Anna Dani says: Often people make things up because they’re worried that they are not interesting. So let your friend know that she doesn’t need stories to make friends or impress others. Point out that when others discover the truth, they won’t be impressed at all. Dear Dani, I have two best friends and they’re always leaving me out! They never invite me to anything. What can I do? Tom Dani says: Groups of three can be very difficult because one person often gets left out. Your friends may not realize how you feel. Talk to them about this and agree to plan the next outing together. With a bit of effort, a group of three can be a wonderful friendship! Dear Dani, I told my friend a secret, but then I found out she told it to somebody else. What can I do? Daisy Dani says: We all make mistakes so give your friend another chance. But tell her that your secret is important to you and that she must not do this again. If your friend finds it hard to keep a secret, be careful of what you tell her in future. Dear Dani, I’m friends with a boy, but some girls keep laughing at me about it. Can’t girls be friends with boys as well? Mary Dani says: Of course girls can be friends with boys. Some girls laugh at this because they don’t really know any boys. Carry on enjoying your friendship. If the girls got to know this boy, they might stop teasing you. Why not invite one or two of them along next time you meet him? 21. Whose friend has a “big mouth”? A. Mary’s. B. Daisy’s. C. Anna’s. D. Tom’s. 22. A. avoiding B. hating C. making fun of D. taking pity on B It was the first day of class. Two of her new ESL (English as a Second Language) classmates wanted to know where Tara was from. They were both from Iraq. Because Tara looked Iraqi, one of the women asked Tara, in English and face to face, if she was from Iraq. Tara replied, "No, I'm not." Then the women took turns asking Tara if she was from Iran, or Syria, or Jordan. To each question, Tara responded with a simple no. Laughing, one woman said to the other, "She's not from anywhere!" The two went to their desks, beginning to gossip in Arabic. The next day, the teacher divided the students into groups of four. The students in each group asked introductory questions of each other. A student in Tara's group asked her, "Where are you from?" Tara answered that she was from Iraq. The two women who had questioned Tara the day before were sitting only a few feet away. Both of them heard Tara's response. "Aha!" they both screamed. "You ARE from Iraq!" Tara smiled and said yes. Then she apologized to both of them for lying the day before. She explained that she had not wanted to get into an Arabic conversation with them. It had been her experience that many ESL students continued to speak their native language in ESL class, and Tara had not come to ESL class to practice her Arabic. In her opinion, ESL students should try to speak English only. "I agree," said Rose. "You're 100 percent right," agreed Jennifer. "Rose and I must stop speaking Arabic to each other. Right, Rose?" Rose nodded, and then said something in Arabic. All three women laughed. Over the next four months, Tara became friendly with both women, although she never spoke a word of Arabic to them during class or break. 24. Where is Tara actually from? A. Jordan B. Iran C. Iraq D. Syria 25. What can we learn from the passage? A. Tara, Rose and Jennifer were in the same group. B. Tara had lied to Rose and Jennifer the day before. C. All ESL students spoke their native language in class. D. Rose didn’t get into an Arabic conversation at first. 26. The teacher required the students to ask introductory questions. Which of the following questions can meet the teacher’s requirement? A. What did you set down in your diary? B. Have you finished your homework? C. When will you pack up to go outdoors? D. Are you fond of making a voyage? 27. What can be the best title of this passage? A. English only in class B. An ESL student C. An Arabic conversation D. Tara’s apology C I live in rural Virginia, and my high school was in between two farms. Although I was never much into sports, I had a few friends who were on the cross-country running team. The course for the cross-country track took a meandering path around the school. One part of the course took the runners past an old farmhouse, deserted on the top of a hill overlooking the school. There were rumors that it was haunted, but to my knowledge no one ever saw or heard anything there. It was just a big, old, deserted house. That being said, I shall relate the story of my friend on the CC run, and the discovery made by myself and some companions one day... Her name was Candy, and she was on the CC team. She was hardly the star member, and would, unfortunately, often find herself running alone. One day, when as usual the pack had left her far behind, she found herself alone in front of the old house. Glancing up, she saw someone walk past an upstairs window. She was scared. She told this to us, and we decided to check the place out the following day. What we found there was the typical old falling-apart farmhouse. Empty rooms, creaky floorboards, beer bottles, and cigarette butts. Then we rounded the corner from the old living room to go upstairs, and each of us stopped dead in our tracks.... There were no stairs. Obviously, the stairwell had collapsed long ago. We explored the house more carefully but there was no way to reach the second floor. As in the middle of our exploration we heard a big noise outside, and we all beat a hasty retreat out the back. I don't know if it was a ghost she saw, or if it were someone who could climb like an orangutan(猩猩), but it's all a moot point now. That house was pulled down only one year later, and a nice shiny new modern house was built in its place. I wonder if the owner of that house have any late night visitors... 28. Which of the following words can be used to describe Candy’s companions? A. faithful B. stubborn C. brave D. responsible 29. What can we know from the passage? A. The writer is good at cross-country running. B. Candy is a star member on the CC team. C. We left the old house with a look of fright. D. The house was pulled down by the runners. 30. What can be the best title of the passage? A. An old farmhouse. B. A CC running team. C. My friend Candy D. Late night visitors 31. What does the underlined sentence “it’s all a moot point” in the last paragraph mean? A. It’s a fact that we all accept. B. It’s a mystery that remains unsolved. C. It’s a discovery that we’ve made. D. It’s a belief that people hold. D Towards the end of Middle English, a sudden change in pronunciation started, with vowels (元音) being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British communicated with people frequently from around the world. This means that lots of new words and expressions entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was a common language in print. Books became cheaper and more people learned to read. Spelling and grammar became fixed and the dialect of London became the standard. In 1604, the first English dictionary came out. Early Modern English and Late Modern English are mostly different in the number of words. Late Modern English has a lot more words, mainly because of two reasons: firstly, the Industrial Revolution led to the need for new words; secondly, the British Empire covered one quarter of the earth’s surface, and the English language took in foreign words from many countries. From around 1600, the English colonization (殖民地化) of North America led to the creation of American English. Some English pronunciations and words froze when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English. Some expressions that the British call “American English” are in fact from British expressions. They were kept in the colonies but were lost for a time in Britain. Spanish also had an influence on American English. For example, words like “canyon” “ranch” “stampede” and “vigilante” are from Spanish. They entered English by the people of Spain who settled in the American West. French words and West African words also influenced American English. Today, American English has a greater influence because of the USA’s movies, television, popular music, trade and technology. 32. The main difference between Early and Late Modern English lies in __________. A. vocabulary B. pronunciation C. spelling D. grammar 33. From the passage, we can learn the word “canyon” is from __________. A. American dialect B. African dialect C. Spanish D. French 34. The third paragraph mainly talks about _________. A. English colonies in North America B. the development of American English C. Other languages’ influence on American English D. the difference between American English and British English 35. The underlined word “froze” can best be replaced by ________. A. unchanged B. disappeared C. improved D. ignored 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Maybe you are an average student. It can help you escape from pressure and you will not be lonely. Best wishes to you! Yours, Lihua 听力原文 Text 1 W: I went to the store yesterday. but it was closed. Why? M: It is always closed on Wednesday. But it keeps open on Sunday. Text 2 W:I don't know which color to choose. Red or white? M:I think blue is OK. All of Tom's things are in blue. Text 5 W: How many eggs do you need for your cake? M: Last time I used 10 eggs for a big one. But this time I want to make a small cake. Maybe 5 is enough. Text 6 M: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find a dryer in the hotel? I spilled some water on my shirt just now. But I need to clean it right away. W:Yes. There is one dryer on the third floor, but it is taken by another guest. M: I have an important meeting 10 minutes later. Is there another one in the hotel? W: Sorry sir, the other one is broken. Text 7 W: Have you got your ticket to Dallas yet? M: Yes. I will go to the airport next Monday. I will take the Southwest Airline. W: Why don’t you fly with us? M: I prefer the Southwest Airline. I think I should buy some food first, and I will catch the next train. Text 10 M: If you are invited to a meal in an American family, it is always informal. The dishes served by the hostess is usually in family style, and when you are at table, everyone passes the food to one another. A casual talk is expected at dinner table, because Americans can feel uncomfortable in silence. When you are invited, the first thing you should do is to ask whether you may bring something for the meal. Sometimes you may need to do it, but if it is refused by the host, you shouldn’t do that. It can be considered impolite. Preparing some small presents is always necessary. It is a kind of politeness. Candy and flowers are good choices. Another important thing is that you are supposed to arrive a little later. Arriving early is very impolite, because the hostess needs to make everything well prepared in the last few minutes. By the way, more than 15 minutes’ late should be told to the hostess in advance. You don’t need to take off shoes. In a word, you just make yourself at home, because most Americans treat their guest as their family.查看更多
