We started developing it in September 2008 as an online directory of charities that offer donation-pick-up service. It becomes clear that people need a resource devoted entirely to the charitable donations of clothing and other household goods. There are plenty of great websites out there that focus on donating money to charity, but there was practically no website devoted to the donations of non-cash items. DonationTown.org is here to change that!‎ There are many benefits of donating your old items to charity ‎*Keep your items out of a landfill(垃圾处理场). Donations help the environment.‎ ‎*Get organized! Clean up the mess in your closets(橱柜) and garage.‎ ‎*Much more!‎ How the donation process works Step 1: You have got items to donate.‎ Step 2: We’ll show you a list of charities that will pick up your donations.‎ Step 3: Contact one. If it needs your clothing and household goods, it’ll come to your home and pick them up.‎ Donation town is free ‎ Donation Town is free for both charities and donors. We do not take any monetary donations either. We’re here to help charities and donors connect. That’s it.‎ The Donation Town volunteers ‎ The Donation Town volunteers are made up of lawyers, bankers, teachers and many people who feel like giving back to their community. Everyone brings their unique talents to ensure that Donation Town is the best resource for people to donate clothing and household goods to charity. We would like to thank everyone who has volunteered their time and services. Donation Town would not be possible without your help.‎ ‎56. Donation Town.org is set up because of _____.‎ A. the need to call on more people to donate money B. the fact that the waste of clothing should be avoided C. the necessity(必要性) of changing some unpleasant donation websites D. the shortage(缺乏) of websites devoted to non-cash item donations ‎57. What can we learn about Donation Town from the passage?‎ A. It helps classify the donated items for free.‎ B. It is mainly meant to improve the environment.‎ C. It builds a bridge between donors and charities.‎ D. It finds volunteers from all walks of life for charities.‎ ‎(B)‎ ‎ As soon as you cover your hair with shampoo, all the hot water runs out. When you step out of the shower shivering (发抖), you realize that you forgot to grab a towel. Can this morning get any worse? It seems like whatever can go wrong this morning has indeed gone wrong. If you’ve ever had a day like this, then you’re probably already familiar with Murphy’s Law墨菲法则(认为会出错的,终将出错的论断). Murphy’s Law is an idiom that means if anything can go wrong, it will. Is there any truth in it, though? And exactly who is this Murphy anyway?‎ ‎ The idea at the heart of Murphy’s Law---if anything can go wrong, it will---has been ‎ around for a long, long time. It reflects a mood of pessimism (悲观) about life when things just aren’t going their way. Murphy’s Law remains a popular concept, because we tend to focus on negative events and look for reasons when things go badly. To put it another way, we tend to ignore all the things that go right throughout the day. When things go wrong, we tend to wring our hands and cry out, “Why?”‎ ‎ So who is this Murphy? Some people believe there has never been a real Murphy. They claim that Murphy is a name given to a repairman who appeared in old Navy cartoons around the time of World War II. The man often made mistakes. Others, though, believe that there is indeed a Murphy.‎ ‎ In fact, Murphy’s Law is usually thought to have been put forward by Captain Edward A. Murphy. Captain Murphy was an air force engineer who participated in a deceleration (减速) test in 1949 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. During the test, Captain Murphy discovered that all 16 deceleration sensors had been installed (安装) incorrectly. Each sensor could be installed in two days, and in each and every case the sensor had been installed incorrectly. Basically, if anything could go wrong, it would. Murphy said something to that effect, others repeated it, and the effect has been more commonly known as Murphy’s Law ever since.‎ ‎58. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?‎ ‎ A. By repeating Murphy’s famous saying.‎ ‎ B. By putting forward an argument.‎ ‎ C. By analyzing some facts.‎ ‎ D. By giving an example. ‎ ‎59. People who tend to use Murphy’s Law as an excuse_____.‎ ‎ A. seem less optimistic about life B. take little notice of what happens around C. are more willing to correct their mistakes D. are curious and like to find out why things go wrong ‎60. Why is the effect known as Murphy’s Law according to the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Captain Murphy made a study on the effect.‎ ‎ B. Captain Murphy discovered the effect in his work.‎ ‎ C. Captain Murphy found out the effect from his mistakes.‎ ‎ D. Captain Murphy was the first one to write about the effect.‎ ‎(C)‎ Companies Like General Motors, Toyota and Uber are all trying their best to be the first to bring self-driving cars to market. The University of Michigan has even built a 23-acre town, Dubbed Mcity, to help the cause. It allows car makers to safely test their self-driving cars.‎ However, while the city can be used to test many real-life road conditions, it cannot help test gestures drivers use to communicate their intent(意图) to fellow drivers, people walking on the street or bicyclists. These include gestures like nodding at a person who is walking or on a bike to show he or she can cross the road safely.‎ To try to come up with a way to test these everyday situations that self-driving cars would face, US car company Ford teamed up with researchers from Virginia Tech. The team at first considered using text as a way to communicate the car’s intent, but decided it would probably not work everywhere given that people would have to be able to read and understand the same language. The idea of using symbols was also discarded, because research showed most people didn’t have a good understanding of what they meant.‎ After some thought, the researchers decided to use light signals, which could be understood by people worldwide. A solid white light served as a warning that there were no humans in the car. A slow blinking one showed that the car was coming to a stop, while a rapidly flashing light told passersby that the car was about to run faster,‎ Then came the big challenge------testing the signals on real roads. “We need to try out the new light signals to communicate the intent of the vehicle, but if we have got a driver behind the seat, we still have natural communication between humans like eye-to-eye contact,” said Andy Shaudt, who led the Virginia Tech research team.‎ Taking inspiration from a similar study done two years ago, by Stanford researcher Wendy Ju, the team designed a car seat costume(服装) that the driver would wear to cover his or her face and upper body. The drivers could see very clearly through it.‎ The researchers then equipped a Ford car with cameras to capture human reaction(反应) to a light bar, which flashed one of the three signals when proper. Six drivers, all keeping their hands low on the wheel so as not to be noticed, took turns test driving the car through the busy streets of northern Virginia in August. They drove for 1,500 hours, covered 1,800 miles and tested the light signals at more than 1,650 places, including crossroads, parking lots and airport roadways.‎ While details of the study have not been shown, Ford stated that the overall reaction to the flashing lights was very encouraging. Ford plans on sharing the information with 11 other companies and working with them to design a signaling system that would be understood by all.‎ ‎61. What can be inferred about self-driving cars in Paragraph 1?‎ ‎ A. Great efforts have been put into them.‎ ‎ B. They will be first used in Dubbed Mcity.‎ ‎ C. They will come onto market within one year.‎ ‎ D. Their great importance hasn’t been fully realized.‎ ‎62. The underlined word “discarded” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “_____”.‎ ‎ A. taken in B. talked about ‎ C. put forward D. given up ‎63. What does it mean when the light of a self-driving car flashes quickly?‎ ‎ A. Nobody was in the car. B. The car was about to stop.‎ ‎ C. People should avoid the car. D. There is something wrong with the car.‎ ‎64. What was the test driving mainly for?‎ ‎ A. To prove that self-driving cars are safe.‎ ‎ B. To create easy-to-understand signals on real roads.‎ ‎ C. To test if self-driving cars can deal with unexpected situations.‎ ‎ D. To see people’s reaction to the light signals of self-driving cars ‎ (D)‎ Culture shock------ these two words have been part of my vocabulary from an early age. My American parents were living in England when I was born. I grew up moving ‎ around military(军事的) bases in Europe until I was 17 years old.‎ Though I often experienced culture shock, I have never experienced culture shock like I did when we moved to Arizona in the US. I must admit as a teenage girl I really enjoyed shopping at stores I had never been inside before. But the excitement of new things wore off. Though I had an American accent and looked American, I was not fitting in as well as my parents had hoped. Pop cultural references from the 1980s to 1990s were completely lost on me. I didn’t know the words in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and realized my parents had been fooling me when they said Taco Bell was expensive.‎ My school was so much different from the schools I had attended before. Race had never been an issue to me. Now I attended a white school even though we lived in a highly populated Spanish community. Seeing only a handful of African-American students at lunch sitting by themselves made me feel as if I had been transported back to the 1950s.‎ Besides, I was getting ready to enter my senior year of high school and here I was with a driving permit(许可证) while my classmates had their own cars. I had been used to the case of European public transportation, but now I could not get anywhere without a car. With my family, I tried to drink a glass of wine, while out at a restaurant, my parents reminded me of the American drinking age. The America I thought I knew and thought I had grown up to belong to did not seem to exist.‎ The hardest part was that I was unable to communicate with my peers because I was a “hidden immigrant(移民)” with a different world view. They would talk about something and I would try to join in. However, all my memories and experiences involve places, foods, and names that most of my peers did not know. I knew about the countries and capitals in Europe better than I knew about my states and cities. I felt like I was jammed in a puzzle of America to fit in better. Even my family did not seem to understand the culture shock I was experiencing.‎ I felt lost, lonely and in pain for a few years after we moved to America. I was always caught between worlds. It was a form of culture shock related to being a “third culture kid”. Most military families do not even know of the term and most families ‎ don’t make more than two tours out of the US. I now use my experiences and the past pain as lessons as I raise my third culture kids. I feel I may pay more attention than anyone else to their feelings every time we move to help them adapt(适应) well.‎ I still experience forms of culture shock when I return to the US and I say that to show it is a normal experience when we’re travelling and moving between different countries and cultures. It is how to deal with the culture shock and how to help others with the transition(转变) that can make a difference.‎ ‎65. Before the author turned 17, she _____.‎ ‎ A. really loved travelling B. visited England very often ‎ C. lived in various places in Europe D. had little chance of dealing with others ‎66. How did the author most probably feel when she first moved to Arizona?‎ ‎ A. Excited. B. Shocked. C. Scared. D. Puzzled.‎ ‎67. Why did the author feel she was transported back to the 1950s?‎ ‎ A. She was looked down upon by others. ‎ B. She felt that race still had an influence there.‎ ‎ C. A lot of Spanish people were seen in her community. ‎ D. All her classmates had a car but she didn’t have one.‎ ‎68. When the author was talking with her American classmates, _____. ‎ A. they liked making fun of her past ‎ B. they showed a polite interest in her ‎ C. she found it was hard to find a topic ‎ D. she liked talking about her life experiences ‎69. What does the author want to do when raising her own children?‎ ‎ A. Tell them about different cultures.‎ ‎ B. Stay with them every time they move.‎ ‎ C. Make sure they won’t experience various cultures.‎ ‎ D. Make sure they can adapt well after moving to new places.‎ ‎70. What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎ A. Ways to get used to new cultures.‎ ‎ B. The author’s experience of culture shock.‎ ‎ C. The disadvantage of living in different countries.‎ ‎ D. Differences between American and European cultures.‎ 第II卷(非选择题 共35分)‎ 第四部分 写作(共三节,满分35分)‎ 第一节:任务型阅读(共10小题;满分10分)‎ 注意:每空限填1个单词。‎ Do you need to have plenty of money in order to lead a positive lifestyle? Are wealth, possessions, power, and trips abroad signs of a positive lifestyle? If it is true, then only rich people can afford to enjoy a positive lifestyle. The truth is that you don’t have to be rich or famous in order to lead a positive lifestyle. Money can of course help you improve your life, but money, fame, position and power aren’t requirements for a positive lifestyle.‎ What is a positive lifestyle? It means a positive attitude and taking positive action. It means often improving yourself and your life. It means learning from failure and then moving on and trying again. It means living in the present, making the most of it, and not regretting the past or worrying about the future. It means noticing the good qualities of people, not just their bad ones. This requires that you stop judging people and be kinder and more helpful.‎ As you can see, you don’t have to have much money to live this kind of life. All you need is to try to change your attitude towards life, and change a few of your habits. For example, when facing a problem, don’t allow your mind to think of difficulties. Instead, accept the problem, face it with courage, and try to come up with a good way to solve it. Smile more often when you’re together with others. They’ll like you more and you will feel happier, but keep in mind that your smile needs to be sincere. On the other hand, you should choose happiness and focus on happiness, because what ‎ you focus on grows. There are moments of sadness in life, and there is failure and obstacles(障碍). Accept them, look at them as lessons, and try to find ways to get them over.‎ What’s more, don’t be afraid of what you are not familiar with . Just be brave to do things you haven’t done before. You can do small things, like tasting a different kind of food, or meeting new people. Remember, if you want to lead a positive lifestyle, you need to take control of your life.
