Forlales has won a £50,000 top prize to develop cities for the future and was awarded the prize by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).‎ His house, known as Cubo, could be produced in a week, constructed in four hours and costs £60 per square metre. Its use of bamboo—which releases 35% more oxygen into the environment than trees—was praised by the judges. The ability of the houses to be constructed in any bamboo-producing area was one of the key attractions.‎ ‎“The world’s cities are growing all the time and there is a real need to make sure they are safe, clean and comfortable places to live.” John Hughes, the competition head judge and Rics president, said. “As we look at our competitors, who are our next generation of leaders, I believe that real progress will be made in tackling the world’s biggest issues.”‎ Forlales has already identified a suitable area of land to start building his Cubo houses. He plans to begin work next year with experts from the Rics in an attempt to help relieve the huge pressures on housing in Manila, where a third of the 12 million population live in poor districts. He said, “I would like to thank Rics for the opportunity, and look forward to working with them to put this money to good use in Manila, and then hopefully elsewhere around the world.”‎ ‎24. A Competition in House Building B. A Man Devoted to City Development ‎ C. The Bamboo House Winning Top Prize ‎ D. The Solution to Solving Housing Shortage C Few things are more difficult than delivering bad news. Let’s say you’ve got to tell an employee that he or she is being laid off. Or announce to team members that, because of slow sales, your company won’t be able to pay bonuses this year. Or tell people that, because business is so good, they’ll all have to work on an upcoming holiday weekend.‎ ‎ Because you’re a caring person, you’d like to make the bad news easier to take. So you sidle into the subject, talking about other topics first. You choose indirect language. And you try to do whatever you can to soften the blow.‎ ‎ That’s why you may be surprised to learn that the worst way to deliver bad news is to sugarcoat it. According to new research, people on the receiving end of bad news would much rather you rip off the bandage than beat around the bush.‎ ‎ In a study conducted by Nicole Amare, participants received a range of situations involving bad news. For each situation, they were given a choice of two approaches, then asked to select their preferred method. In nearly every case, what participants wanted most was frankness, preferring that the bearer of bad news gives it to them straight.‎ That means next time you need to deliver bad news to one employee or the whole team, you should communicate simply, clearly and directly. Before you begin, list your key message—the 15 to 20 words that sum up what you need to convey. When it’s time to share the news, say this message first.‎ Try to avoid jargon(行话) when delivering the news. This is not the time to disguise the facts in a long and twisty story. Use simple, straightforward language. Meanwhile, it is advisable to show that you care. Of course you’re stressed about the fact that you have to share bad news, but you can still express sympathy.‎ ‎ You can’t change bad news into good, but you can deliver your message in the best way possible.‎ 28. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1? ‎ A. Present some typical bad news. B. Analyze the features of bad news.‎ C. Describe how bad news is delivered. D. Introduce the topic of delivering bad news.‎ 29. What is the author’s attitude to the indirect way of delivering bad news?‎ A. Objective. B. Passive. C. Supportive. D. Cautious.‎ 30. Why is the study by Nicole Amare mentioned in Para. 4? ‎ A. To give suggestions as to delivering bad news. ‎ B. To offer evidence to support the author’s opinion.‎ C. To introduce two methods of delivering bad news.‎ D. To show how people feel when receiving bad news.‎ ‎31. What are you advised to do when delivering bad news? ‎ A. Avoid any question about the news. B. Offer your comfort and a helping hand.‎ C. Use indirect language to hide the facts. D. Tell them as much information as you can.‎ D Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.‎ The study explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the study, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.”‎ Smell, which determines the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome.‎ According to Conrad King’s study, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.‎ However, the way genes control smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory(嗅觉) genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors. ‎ ‎32. What does the author think of human sense of smell?‎ ‎ A. It is powerful. B. It is uncontrollable.‎ C. It is changeable. D. It is complex.‎ ‎33. Why did Conrad King conduct the research about smell?‎ A. To find out how smell influences people.‎ B. To teach people how to choose proper food.‎ C. To study why some food like pizza harm people.‎ D. To explain why different people love different foods.‎ ‎34. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?‎ A. Only a few genes decide our sense of smell.‎ B. Different genes have different effect on people.‎ C. Different people are sensitive to different smells.‎ D. Every person owns at least 50 different olfactory genes.‎ ‎35. What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. Logic and behavior.       B. Smell and its influence.‎ C. Sense ability and food tastes.   D. Olfactory genes and our olfactory system. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ For smart people, there are always no better decisions, but smarter decisions. Let’s see what they usually do when they make smart decisions according to researches.‎ ‎ Remove unimportant decisions. 36 , remove it from consideration. For example, many CEOs, heads of states and hyper-creative people wear the same outfit every day in an effort to conserve mental energy for more important decisions. Decision-making works best when distractions are removed.‎ ‎ 37 . For maximum productivity and sustained impact, your time is better spent on important but non-urgent tasks, according to the Eisenhower principle. “I have two kinds of problems,” he said, “the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.” In other words, developing future tasks is easy to put off, but it’s undeniably critical. 38 . For maximum success, focus on the long-term.‎ ‎ Make most decisions in the morning. As the day wears on, you become more physically and mentally exhausted. 39 . For example, you may skip a workout, overeat or send an emotional email to a co-worker, partner or client if you are tired. Plan on making important decisions in the morning, experts say, while reserving afternoons for meetings and easy tasks.‎ ‎ Seek disconfirming evidence. “Our tendency to only seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs is one of the biggest obstacles to good decision-making,” says Kristan Wheaton, a professor of intelligence studies at Mercyhurst University. 40 , it is important to actively look for information that suggests you are wrong, such as whether a stock(股票) is expected to rise or not.‎ A. Focus on long-term choices B. Overcome barriers to your decision C. While you focus on the urgent tasks D. If a decision doesn’t have an impact on your life or work E. Once you come to a tentative conclusion about something F. When that happens, you make poor or thoughtless decisions G. I’m so excited to hear that China Daily is in need of some volunteers to introduce Chinese culture overseas that I can’t wait to sign up at the first time.‎ First of all, I have been to numerous famous scenic spots, and developed an outgoing and open-minded personality, which makes it easy for me to get along well with others. Secondly, my hometown is a famous historical and cultural city. On holidays, I often act as a volunteer tour guide to show foreign tourists around and introduce them Chinese history and culture, from which I’ve gained relevant experience. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning that I got 7 points in IELTS early this year, which guaranteed my fluent expressing and effective communication with foreigners. So, I firmly believe that I’m the very person you’re looking for.‎ Give me a chance and I’ll try my best. Your prompt response will be appreciated.‎ ‎ Yours,‎ ‎ Li Hua ‎ 听力录音稿:‎ Text 1‎ M: Excuse me, is there still time for some juice on this flight?‎ W: Yes, but you have to drink it fast because we’ll be landing soon.‎ Text 2‎ M: I’m hungry. I’m going for a hot dog.‎ W: I’m on a diet! I really should eat some salad.‎ M: Oh come on! Have a burger. It’s not fattening.‎ W: I guess I would prefer some chips.‎ Text 3‎ M: Tracy is writing a book about German and Danish literature. ‎ W: Wow! She knows Chinese and English. Is she also fluent in German and Danish?‎ M: German, yes. But she’s just starting to learn Danish for the project. ‎ Text 4‎ M: When is the best time to see the Great Wall?‎ W: People don’t agree. Some think the best time is spring. Others think it’s more beautiful in autumn.‎ M: I would like to see it when the forest turns yellow. ‎ Text 5‎ M: I think it’s time we went to see the family doctor for a checkup, Mary. It’s been a while since we had one. You know what they say: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.‎ W: You’re probably right. Now that we’re in our thirties, we should start watching our health more closely. ‎ Text 6‎ M: Could I check out this book?‎ W: Let me see your library card.‎ M: I haven’t got one. ‎ W: You can apply for one right now, if you’d like. ‎ M: Okay. Let me do that right now. ‎ W: Could you fill out this application. ‎ M: I’m finished. Here you go. ‎ W: Could you please sign the back of the card?‎ M: All right. ‎ Text 7‎ W: Morning, Peter. A nice suit! A new one?‎ M: Oh yes. My wife bought it for me yesterday. Julie, you look nice in that yellow dress. Yellow suits you really well.‎ W: Maybe. Several people also have suggested that I get more yellow clothes. They say the color suits me because of my skin. ‎ M: That’s right. You know, pink, green and black could also be good for you. Actually, I think that all colors are okay for a person like you. Different colors can give people different impressions. For example, black could make you look mature, while pink could make you look young and energetic.‎ W: It’s kind of you to say so. It sounds like you’re a clothing expert. ‎ M: Well, compared with my wife, I’m just a beginner. ‎ Text 8‎ M: Hello, Sarah. Haven’t seen you for ages. How is everything?‎ W: Never could have been worse. ‎ M: What do you mean?‎ W: You told me to give up smoking. I made it. But during that period I became angry easily, and my husband got fed up with me. He never stayed at home. I’d rather I hadn’t given up smoking. ‎ M: Things will improve. ‎ W: I hope so. What’s in your hand? Cigarettes? May I borrow a cigarette, Bill?‎ M: Sarah, smoking is bad for your health. You just gave it up.‎ W: Then why do you have cigarettes?‎ M: I’m taking them home to my wife. ‎ W: You mean, your wife is still smoking while you advise me to give it up?‎ M: I simply couldn’t stand her bad temper when she tried to give it up.‎ Text 9‎ W: Good morning. What can I do for you?‎ M: I want to have my house rent out. Just two bedrooms for rent actually, plus the use of the rest of the house. ‎ W: How much were you thinking of for these rooms?‎ M: I used to think of $1,000. But now I think $700 per room would be a fair price. ‎ W: Any other costs?‎ M: Er, just the cleaner who comes in once a week. So that would be another $30 per room for cleaning.‎ W: OK. Does the house have a good view?‎ M: Sure, we’re right by the beach. So looks out of the window, you can see the ocean. ‎ W: Oh, that’s really nice. I wish I was there myself. Anything else worth mentioning?‎ M: Sure. There is a room for playing ping-pong and a pool.‎ W: Sounds good. How’s it heated?‎ M: It’s got central heating but no fireplace. ‎ W: That’s bad. It would be good to have an open fire in winter. OK, I’ll post this up for you and I hope you gave some luck. ‎ Text 10‎ W: Hello. Welcome to the program. In America, May and June are the traditional months for graduations. A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs.
