But her pen dared to travel where her eyes would not. In her 50-year writing profession, Christie’s murder stories made her the world’s best-known mystery(神秘) writer. Only the Bible and Shakespeare’s works have sold more copies than her. Her novels have been turned into films and TV scenes. This month, British TV announced they will remake eight Christie films. “Her work has continuing appeal for viewers,” said director Laura Mackie. “There is always a desire for a really good detective novel.” Born in 1890 in England, Christie was educated at home and began her writing career while working as a nurse during World War I. She went on to produce 79 novels and lots of short stories, dying at the age of 86. With her knowledge of murder, Christie could have been a teacher at police academies. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, introduced Hercule Poirot, a retired Belgian police officer who starred in 30 of her works. Among the most popular are Murder on the Orient Express(1934) and Death on the Nile ( 1937). Poirot is a tidy little man with a funny-looking moustache, an egg-shaped head and a high opinion of himself. We hear these words when someone tells a secret to us. But it can be hard to keep a secret. We’re often tempted to “spill the beans(说漏嘴)”,even if we regret it later. According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well “become a burden”. This is because people often have an “obsessive and anxious urge to share it with someone”. An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted(受委托的) with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail. But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone,” according to Shah. He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out (泄露).But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret. Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret. Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you’d better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn’t so secret anymore. 28.What does underlined word “obsessive” mean? A.Unwilling. B.Confusing. C.Wanting to do something very much. D.Refusing to accept facts. 29.What did researchers at the University of Notre Dame discover about secret-keeping? A.It can result in mental and physical problems. B.It can help promote friendships between people. C.It can harm relationships between friends D.It can result in a sense of distrust between friends 30.What is the main message of Paragraph 5? A.It’s better to share your secrets with quiet people. B.Quiet people suffer less stress from keeping secrets. C.Talkative people are unlikely to keep secrets. D.It’s not a good idea to share your secrets with others. 31.What does Shah suggest people do if they give away someone’s secret by accident? A.Stay away from the person. B.Tell the affected person what happened. C.Exchange a new secret with the person. D.Buy the person a gift as an apology. D Have you ever spent an afternoon in the backyard, maybe grilling or enjoying a basketball game, when suddenly you notice that everything goes quiet? There is an old phrase “calm before the storm”, often used in a situation — a quiet period just before a great activity or excitement. According to our own experience, we know there is actually calm before the storm. But what causes this calm? And is it always calm before the storm? Let’s hear what scientists have to say. A period of calm happens in a particular kind of storm, the simplest kind of storm — a single-cell thunderstorm. In this type of thunderstorm, there is usually only one main updraft, which is warm, damp air and drawn from places near the ground. Storms need warm and damp air as fuel, so they typically draw that air in from surrounding environment. Storms can draw in the air that fit their need from all directions — even from the direction in which the storm is traveling. As the warm, damp air is pulled into a storm system, it leaves a low-pressure vacuum(真空) coming after. The rising air meets the cold dry air that has already existed in the storm clouds, thus the temperature of the warm, damp air drops, and the water vapour(水蒸汽) in it changes into tiny drops that are a precondition of rain. These drops accumulate and build on larger particles like dust, until they grow large enough to form raindrops. This warm, damp air keeps moving upwards, but it becomes cooler and drier during its trip through cloud. When it reaches the top of the cloud, the air gets spit out(被挤出) at the top. This air is sent rolling out over the big thunderclouds. From there, the air goes down. Warm and dry air is relatively stable, and once it covers a region, that air, in turn, causes the calm before a storm. Most thunderstorms, though, don’t start with calm. That’s because most are actually groups of storms with complex wind patterns. There’s so much air moving up and down storm groups that the calm before the storm never happens. Instead, before the storm, it might be really windy! 32. Which best fits the description of a particular kind of storm? A. A thunderstorm with a single shape. B. A thunderstorm without strong winds. C. A storm with air drawn from every direction. D. A storm fueled by moving air from the ground. 33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Cold and dry air. B. Warm and dry air. C. Cold and damp air. D. Warm and damp air. 34. Which does the writer most likely agree to? A. Presence of the calm relies on stable air. B. Not all thunderstorms start with the calm. C. The drier the air is, the bigger the storm will be. D. Storm happens without air moving up and down. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A. Causes and effects of a heavy storm. B. A brief description of a peaceful storm. C. A personal experience of a heavy storm. D. An explanation of the calm before a storm. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Making Peace with Your Parents As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are expanding. ___36 Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents. For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted, or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation — for now. 37 Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening. 38 Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without things getting ugly. 39 How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-makers — they’re interesting people who like to watch movies, and go shopping — just like their teenagers! What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky? 40 You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior; your parents are the only ones who can change theirs. A. It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page. B. You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed. C. And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say. D. Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do. E. You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you. F. And your desire to take control of your own life is growing. G. You may consider seeking outside help. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节, 满分45分) 第一节 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) On August 26, 1999, New York City was struck by a terrible rainstorm. He pointed at the cleaner, said in a loud voice, “How impolite! They haven’t finished eating!” “How could people behave such badly?” I thought.
