Montreal, the second largest city in Canada,is a four hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations. After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St Catherine's Street. While we walked two things surprised us:how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine. All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold.Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁).It is delicious. However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest Frenchspeaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help. We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we'd head to the very modern dance clubs and bars.Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go. 24. While he gave the younger son a lot of love and gifts, he neglected (忽视) the elder son. It was completely puzzling (令人费解) and no one knew why. Within a few years, he ran the business very well and even expanded (扩大) it. What about the younger son? He didn’t have much to do except have a good time. But the father believed that his favorite son would be a success. If the elder son could be a successful businessman, surely the younger one, with a higher education, would do much better. A few years later, the results of his decision became clear. Uninterested in business, the younger son continued spending his time enjoying himself. And he went out of business. But the elder son’s far smaller share (份) of business had expanded and he had proved himself to be a good decision maker. Ashamed at the turn of events, the father met the elder son and was angry with the younger one. The elder son, who was listening to all this quietly, suddenly said he wanted to set up an independent business and live on his own. “Why?” asked the father. “I blame (责备) one person for the way my brother has turned out, and it’s not him. The Sun is the major source of evaporation of water from the oceans and lakes. Sunlight also provides the energy used by green plants to make their own food. These green plants then provide food for all organisms on the Earth. Much of the energy that comes from the Sun never reaches the Earth’s surface. It is either reflected or absorbed by the gases in the upper atmosphere. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere, 30% is reflected by clouds or the Earth’s surface. The remaining 70% warms the surface of the planet, causes water to evaporate, and provides energy for the water cycle and weather. Only a tiny part, approximately 0.023%, is actually used by green plants to produce food. Many gases found in the atmosphere actually reflect heat energy escaping from the Earth’s surface back to the Earth. These gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but prevent energy from leaving. They are therefore called greenhouse gases. When sunlight strikes an object, some of the energy is absorbed and some is reflected. The amount reflected depends on the surface. For example, you’ve probably noticed how bright snow is when sunlight falls on it. Snow reflects most of the energy from the Sun, so it contributes to the low temperatures of winter. Dark-coloured surfaces, such as dark soil or forest, absorb more energy and help warm the surrounding air. 32. According to the passage, the root cause for weather changes on the Earth is ______. A. the atmosphere surrounding the Earth B. water from oceans and lakes C. energy from the Sun D. greenhouse gases in the sky 33. Only a small part of the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s surface because most of it _________. A. absorbed by the clouds in the lower atmosphere B. reflected by the gases in the middle atmosphere C. lost in the upper and lower atmosphere D. used to evaporate water from the oceans and lakes 34. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Much of the energy that comes from the Sun reaches the Earth’s surface. B. Of the energy that reaches the lower atmosphere, 30% is reflected by clouds or the Sun’s surface. C. Snow can’t reflect the energy from the Sun. D. Gases act like the glass of a greenhouse in that they allow energy from the Sun to enter but keep energy from leaving. 35. We learn from the passage that _______________. A. all living things on the Earth depend on the Sun for their food B. a forest looks dark in winter because it absorbs solar energy C. only 0.023% of the energy from the Sun is made use of on the Earth D. greenhouse gases allow heat energy to escape from the Earth’s surface 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you think your vocabulary is weak, a little effort every day over six to nine months can go a long way in improving it.
