The main character is an elephant who is nicknamed “Dumbo”. Dumbo is always laughed at for his big ears, and he is rejected by the other elephants. With no parent to care for him, he is alone. But in fact, he is capable of flying by using his ears as wings. A live-action adaptation of the film directed by Tim Burton is scheduled to be released on March 29, 2019. Shazam! (April 5) Shazam is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Directed by David F. Sandberg, the film is set to star Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a teenage boy who can transform via the magic word “Shazam” into an adult superhero, played by Zachary Levi. It will be the first film version of the character since the 1941 series Adventures of Captain Marvel (the character’s original name). Aladdin (May 24) Aladdin is a fictional character and the role of the film Aladdin (1992) based on Aladdin, a folk tale of Middle Eastern origin He is voiced by Scott Weinger, while his singing voice is provided by Brad Kane. Aladdin never received a formal education, and has only learned by living on the streets of Agrabah. He has to steal food in the local market in order to survive. Mena Massoud is set to play a live-action version of the character in a live action adaptation of the 1992 film. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (May 31) Godzilla, King of the Monsters is a 1956 Japanese-American science fiction film, co-directed by Terry O. Morse and Ishiro Honda. It is a heavily re-edited American adaptation. For this new version of Godzilla, some of the original Japanese dialogue was translated into English, and some of the political, social and anti-nuclear themes were removed completely. 1. Which one will be shown to the audience as a form of film for the first time? A. Dumbo. B. Shazam! C. Aladdin. D. Godzilla, King of the Monsters. 2. Who is the actor of the newest version of Aladdin? A. Scott Weinger. B. Brad Kane. C. Terry O. Morse. D. Mena Massoud. 3. On which day can you watch a film about a pitiful animal according to the text? A. March 29. B. April 5. C. May 24. D. May 31. B A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem. First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs. Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor. In addition the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institutions should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young. One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent. To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations. 4. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article? A. To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem. B. To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people. C. To point out the need for government support for old people. D. To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life. 5. What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Impossible. B. Practical. C. Useful. D. Successful. 6. According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people? A. Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire. B. Increase savings levels of people during their working years. C. Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old. D. Make available pensions for those who have retired. 7. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money. B. Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age. C. There is no single solution to the problems of the old. D. Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people. C Josh Morrison, 17, dreamed of raising $100,000 to build a home for a low-income family. After years of hard work, his dream has come true. The house is now in the early stages of building. Six years ago, Josh and his dad went into a Habitat for Humanity Restore, a home improvement store run by the nonprofit organization. They were there to buy a sink. Josh, then 11, also noticed a collection of pennies. “I instantly felt the urge to help out with that,” he said. Josh set a fundraising deadline of four years. Many people doubted whether he could reach his goal of $100,000, but it didn’t shake his faith. He raised money at his school and other nearby schools. He collected money from neighbors, got publicity from local newspapers, and placed cans in stores so that people could donate extra change. Josh’s fundraising efforts began to produce results. Still, there were challenges. Four months before his deadline, he was $30,000 short. He decided to hold a Family Fun Fair and Spaghetti Dinner in Uxbridge, which is in the province of Ontario. The event raised $19,000. “I didn’t care how long it took me,” Josh said. “I would raise $100,000. “With three weeks left, a company called Josh’s house, offering to donate $18,000. Eventually, Josh reached a total of $124,000 before his deadline. “The momentum just kept going, and we decided to do more.” he said. “Josh’s Penny House” is being built by Habitat for Humanity in the city of Oshawa, along with 24 new townhouses. Josh has helped with some of the construction, as have other volunteers. He will choose the family that moves into the unit. Next year, the 17-year-old will head to college in British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province. As a 11-year-old kid when starting fundraising, Josh was able to send a powerful message across the world. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress. On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness. Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes. We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such. 12. What’s the function of food mentioned in the article? A. To help motivate homesickness. B. To show national identity. C. To reflect a country’s history. D. To show a community’s superiority. 13. What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph2 refer to? A. The specific traditional food. B. The national culture. C. A traditional expression of food. D. The old-fashioned taste. 14. Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant? A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes. B To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil. C. To make the dishes popular among customers. D. To present their own food culture in a new way. 15. What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures? A. Negative. B. Balanced. C. Unfair. D. Unchangeable. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The dictionary isn’t forever. What happens to a word when its popularity starts to decline? But when she saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her. Her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home, we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny paid off the pearls. Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favorite story. One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?” “Oh, yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” the little girl said delightedly, with a broad smile on her face. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” Hearing that, Jenny froze there, an anxious expression twisting her face. “Oh! Daddy, not my pearls! But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. Okay?” “Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss, gently and calmly. “Good night, little one.” A week later, her father once again asked Jenny after her story, “Do you love me?” “Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you.” the little girl murmured softly, trying to escape from her father’s eyes. “Well, then, give me your pearls.” “Oh, Daddy, not my pearls! She whispered to her father, softly and gently, “Daddy, you know I love you more than the necklace.” Then, the necklace slid into her father’s hands determinedly. Paragraph 2: Holding the plastic pearl his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue box. Much to Jenny’s amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box, which set her heart racing. Jenny froze there, a thrilled expression twisting her face. Before Jenny was able to say something. her father brushed a warm kiss on her face and gathered her into his arms. Holding the genuine necklace in her hand, Jenny lifted her lip, tears beginning to blur her vision. When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent-minded, with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly.使用了状语从句的省略,和with复合结构;Holding the plastic pearl his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue box.使用了非谓语动词做状语;Much to Jenny’s amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box, which set her heart racing.使用了which引导的定语从句。这些为文章增色不少,而且全文中没有中国式英语的句式,显示了很高的驾驭英语的能力。另外,文章思路清晰、层次分明,上下句转换自然,为文章增色添彩。查看更多
