And yet in this modern world, too many of us spend our days with our heads lowered for a simple reason: we’re staring at the tiny screen of a smartphone. People spend an average of 2 to 4 hours each day with their neck bent(弯曲) while sending off emails or texts. That’s 700 to 1,400 hours a year. The success of social media has led to a rapid development of bad smartphone posture(姿势). The average adult head weighs 10 to 12 pounds when it’s in the upright position. However, because of the gravity(重力), bending your head at only a 15 degree puts 27 pounds of pressure on your spine(脊椎); a 30 degree neck bend could equal 40 pounds of a pressure; a 45 degree bend adds the force of 49 pounds, according to research from Dr. Kenneth Hansraj from New York. These stresses may lead to many problems. It’s no secret that correct posture is better for your back. According to the researchers, good posture is described as ears aligned(成一条直线) with the shoulders. In suitable alignment, spinal stress disappeared. It is the best position for the spine. Standing tall doesn’t just make you look better; it improves your health, too. Other studies have found good posture has even been connected to ways of behaving. People who have poorer posture often have poorer physical and emotional(情绪上的) health. The researchers describe bad posture as “the head in a forward position and the shoulders dropping forward in a rounded position”. Bad posture has been connected to many medical problems, including headaches and other problems, depression and heart disease. This is why Hansraj said it’s important to be careful about your smartphone posture. While it is nearly impossible to avoid the technologies that cause these problems, people should make an effort to look at their phones with a correct posture. 1.Through the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 the author wants to show that ______. A.the social media have its bad side B.the social media have made a great success C.people have to use social media unavoidably D.more and more people are using smartphone 2.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? A.It’s healthy to bend your back regularly. B.Your back is getting exercise as you bend it. C.The average weight of an adult head always changes. D.The more you bend your neck, the heavier the head becomes. 3.What is the correct posture? A.Bend your head within 15 degree. B.Raise and lower your head in turn. C.Drop your head forward in a rounded position. D.Keep the positions of the neck and shoulders in a line. 4.It can be learnt a correct posture can ______. A.cure many diseases B.make one behave differently C.cause no stress to the spine D.prevent one from gaining weight B .I will never forget the darkness, the pain and strong desire(想法) to die. November arrived grey and busy, and going into an even more stressful December, I was filled with anxious thoughts. A visit to my father’s grave(坟墓) is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried. On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, each of them with “winter love”, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches(门道). It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch. The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it stopped me from my dark thoughts. By January I had developed a daily practice: on Sunday I’d bake(烘焙)cookies and package them up, and on Monday I’d deliver(递送) them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route. Then things started showing up on my doorstep — a homemade cup, a pair of socks with cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one warmed my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was filled with the love and care of my community(社区). I found out that something so simple had created such great kindness. I was changing into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind and that life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone. 1.What can we know about the author from the first two paragraphs? A.She felt life was too painful to live. B.She was in a bad physical condition. C.She feel pressed because of her father’s death. D.She recovered after visiting her father’s grave. 2.After she started sharing cookies with neighbors, the author______. A.gained trust and care from them B.added other things to her delivery list C.felt her life was no longer busy or stressful D.found some of them had more mental problems than her 3.What is the main purpose of this passage? A.To express gratitude to caring neighbors. B.To share how being kind helped her regain hope. C.To speak of the benefits of baking cookies at home. D.To show the importance of a trusted community. C We all put off things in one way or another: finishing a final paper hours before the deadline(期限), or putting off that trip to the supermarket until the refrigerator shelves are completely empty. Psychologists call that procrastination, which is to delay(推迟) doing something that you should do, usually because you don’t want to do it. In recent years, psychologists around the world have been asking: what else is there behind procrastination? “Procrastination is based on our genetics”, says Sharad Paul, MD, author of The Genetics of Health. If you like to put things off or surf the internet instead of getting work done, you might be able to blame your ancestors. While procrastination seems like a character weakness, it developed for a reason. “The genes progressed down generations because these people were still hidden in caves(洞穴) fearful of animals that fed on meat. They were always saying: ‘My tools are not sharp enough. I’d better spend more time perfecting this spear(矛).’” says Sharad Paul. “These people survived more because they avoided conflicts, and these genes were handed down to future generations.” While it’s highly attractive to simply blame your parents, the buck stops with you. Paul says, “People think that genes determine their fate(命运). This is only true if their actions lead in that direction.” “Anything can be changed or improved, including our gene expressions”, says Paul, who likes to refer to the 10,000-hours theory Malcom Gladwell shares in his book The Outliers, suggesting that talent is made with practice and commitment, not a born character. The best thing to overcome procrastination is to get moving. “Start slow and keep building up perseverance(毅力) levels. There are many different forms of perseverance exercise and many involve leg movements. Pick one that you like. An average of just 30 minutes a day has been shown to be beneficial. Paul says, “If you have the right genes, this could be perhaps a bit faster, but not by much.” Therefore, there is hope for us all. 1.Why does the author use examples in the first paragraph? A.To make readers familiar with themselves. B.To introduce the topic of procrastination. C.To show our bad behaviors of procrastination. D.To explain why we have the habit of procrastination. 2.The underlined sentence in paragraph 4 probably means “______”. A.Genes from your parents are to blame. B.Your actions make you highly attractive. C.You should take the responsibility for yourself. D.You should stop throwing bucks at your parents. 3.What’s best title of the passage? A.Genes: Weakness or Hope? B.Genes: Prevention or Cure? C.Procrastination: Reason and Solution. D.Procrastination: Example and History. 三、七选五 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 University Student Life in North America For many westerners, going to university is a very exciting time in life. ①_______Other students choose to live away home even if they go to a university that is close to the parents’ house. The truth is that everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be going wrong, I quite understand how you are feeling now and there is no need to worry about it so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips. First of all, talk to someone you trust about the trouble you’re faced with, which is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. Last but not least, remain optimistic about your future. Having a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits. I hope you'll soon become calmer and better. Yours, Li Hua 查看更多
