We actually won the state championship. But, I didn’t really play much. But I loved being a part of the team. I was a super fan and I had front row tickets to every game. Every day after practice, I was the only one who showered in the locker rooms. The reason why I liked showering in the locker rooms was that it saved time. I just needed to throw my dirty clothes back into my gym locker and then change back into my clean clothes I wore from school and then I could go straight home or go out with my friends. The water was freezing cold. And that’s why I was the only one who showered in these locker rooms. And at the time, I didn’t know why I was doing it. The cold water was hard to bear. I would jump up and down and make strange noises. And all my teammates could see me. I was just a young 17-year old who didn’t mind being watched. I remember people asking me why I did it and I’d tell them that these cold showers helped build my character. What I have learned is how to deal with discomfort, hardship and so on. It taught me to get used to discomforts, because when your life becomes too comfortable, you reach a point of no return. It also helped me fight through any pain or hardship. And above all, cold showers have helped me learn to face discomfort bravely, so I can get through anything and get it done. The habits you build now are going to determine your future. How successful do you want to be? How much can you handle? What are you doing every day that is going to help you achieve your goals no matter what discomfort or troubles it brings? 25. Why didn’t the other teammates shower in the locker rooms? A. Because all of them were too lazy. B. Because they wanted to practice more. C. Because the water was too cold. D. Because they liked going straight home. 26. According to the writer the cold showers________. A. made him become a better basketball player B. had him be more popular with his teammates C. helped to make his character stronger D. caused him to give up some bad habits 27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Why We Need Cold Showers. B. Why I Love Playing Basketball. C. How We Build Our Character. D. How I Determine My Future. C There are two ways of driving in the world: if the driver’s seat is on the left and cars travel on the right side of the road, it is called “left-hand driving”, as it is in China, while the other way of driving is called “right-hand driving”, as it is in Britain. Nowadays, around 65% of the world’s population drives on the right of the road, while the rest is used to driving on the left. Though no one knows the exact reasons, it seems likely that people in ancient times travelled on the left. Roman coins show pictures of horsemen passing on each other’s right. And right-hand people generally got on a horse from the animal’s left. Obviously, it’s safer to do this at the left side of the road, and it makes sense for the horse to be ridden on the left. A change happened in the late 1700s. When Napoleon conquered(攻占) nations, he forced them to travel on the right side of the road, which spread left-hand driving throughout Europe. However, Britain still stuck with the right-hand driving rule and countries which were part of the British Empire were made to follow. This is why India, Australia and the former British colonies(殖民地) in Africa continue to drive on the left. One exception is Egypt, as that country was defeated by Napoleon before becoming part of the British Empire. Some countries changed sides’ until modern times. Sweden only moved to driving on the right in 1967 and Iceland changed the following year. Ghana changed sides’ in 1974. On September 7, 2009, Samoa became the third country ever to change from left-to-right-hand driving for the reason that it made it easier to import cheap cars from right-hand driving Japan, Australia and New Zealand. So if you want to travel to another country or go on business, make sure you know whether it is left-or right-hand driving to avoid unnecessary troubles. 28. Which picture shows the correct driving in Britain? A B C D 29. In ancient times, Romans ___________. A. travelled on the right B. rode past each other’s right C. got on the horses from the right D. behaved as they liked 30. In modern times, countries follow the same driving way except __________. A. Iceland B. China C. Sweden D. Australia 31. What is the writer’s purpose for writing this passage? A. To introduce the development of the two ways of driving. B. To compare the differences of the two ways of driving. C. To explain the advantages of the two ways of driving. D. To complain about the change of the two ways of driving. D "If music is the medicine of the soul(灵魂), let it play on," said a famous person. I think he said so because probably he got some help from music. Music has some strange abilities. Medical scientists have found that a person that feels stressed can actually listen to some kind of music and become well. The researchers said that since stress comes as a result of life events such as starting a new family, starting a new business, and starting a new job, one can actually listen to good music and feel good because good music touches the human mind in a positive way. Music helps you to forget the life events that make you worried and remember the important events that once happened in your life. Depression(抑郁) is a disease caused by stress, smoking, social problems and so on. Depression is also caused by problems such as failure in business. Depression may bring us weakness, headache, and loss of concentration. Good music makes one remember happy moments or good days. If you play music about love, it makes you feel like falling in love again though you may have had several upset experiences. And such good feelings make you healthy. Anxiety(焦虑) is another health problem that can be controlled by music. Anxiety is a side effect of some major health problems such as cancer of the liver and cancer of the breast. Good music makes you feel relaxed and removes the pains from these diseases and you feel all right. Good music can send you to sleep. And you need to know that sleep puts your body in a healthy condition. Sleep takes away the effects of stress, depression and anxiety from a person. 32. According to the famous person in Paragraph 1, music can . Good music helps people remove stress mainly by . Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. The Health Benefits of Listening to Music B. Stress Can Bring Us Many Kinds of Diseases C. Some Diseases Have Something to Do With Music D. Tips For Us to Live a Healthy And Comfortable Life Ⅱ. 阅读填句(每题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ways to Save Time We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter. 1. Get Out of Bed Earlier If you normally get up at 7: 30 a. m. , try getting up at 7: 00 a. m. That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish. 37 2. Do the Important Tasks First Once you get to work, get the important ones done first(not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones. 38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won’t miss the important ones. 3. Reduce Interruptions If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don’t just eat up time, they also break your concentration. When you’ve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voice mail. 39 Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation. 4. 40 A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When you’re working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you’re facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it’s easier to deal with. A. Stay Focused on Your Work B. Take Breaks When Necessary C. If you have an office door, close it. D. If you work like this, you’ll usually save time. E. Would you want me to make your day longer? F. I can’t magically make all your days 25 hours long. G. Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start. We found him a few weeks ago, when he was walking along the road in the countryside.
