When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck.‎ The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don't think you'll only find them in their home state California. Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there.‎ But these firefighters don't work the same way as firefighters in a big city. They work in areas where there are large numbers of trees, bushes, and grass. They climb up and down steep hills to clear brush and burnable debris(残骸). They sometimes use water, but they often fight fire with fire!‎ They do that by lighting what are called “backfires” which are small, controlled fires that burn up fuel in the path of larger wildfires. That way, when the wildfire gets there, it has nothing to burn and nowhere to go, because all the burnable fuel has already gone up in smoke The Hotshots also clear away fuel using old fashioned hard work. For example, they use a saw to cut away trees and heavy brush that could catch fire.‎ Of course there are times when the Golden Eagles Hotshots do have trucks to supply water to the fires. But the water is limited, and these guys have to rely on hard work more than anything. Physical fitness is very important. They have to be in great physical shape to handle steep hills and difficult terrain ( 地 形 ) while carrying a 60-pound pack.‎ The Golden Eagles Hotshots definitely work hard for their pay. But thanks to their efforts, many lives have been saved, many houses have not been burned, and countless trees are still standing.‎ 1. According to Paragraph 3, the firefighters mentioned in the passage .‎ A. do most of their work in ‎California B. avoid climbing steep hills in their work C. do their work equipped with only advanced tools A. carry out their work mostly in forests and mountains 2. What can we learn about the Golden Eagles Hotshots?‎ A. They are firefighters working in big cities.‎ B. Their work requires physical strength.‎ C. They are voluntary firefighters working for free.‎ D. They usually hold a hose to put out the fires.‎ 3. What is the author’s attitude towards the Golden Eagles Hotshots?‎ ‎A. Doubtful. B. Sympathetic.‎ C. Critical. D. Appreciative.‎ B In the United States alone, over 100 million cellphones are thrown away each year. Cell-phones are part of a growing mountain of electronic waste like computers and personal digital assistants. The electronic waste stream is increasing three times faster than traditional garbage as a whole.‎ Electronic devices contain valuable metals such as gold and silver. A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods represented by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration (含量) of gold and other precious metals was higher in so-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.‎ Electronic wastes also contain many poisonous metals. Even when the machines are recycled and the harmful metals removed, the recycling process often is carried out in poor countries, in practically uncontrolled ways which allow many poisonous substances to escape into the environment Creating products out of raw materials creates much more waste material, up to 100 times more, than the material contained in the finished products. Consider again the cell-phone, and imagine the mines that produced those metals, the factories needed to make the box and packaging(包装)it came in. Many wastes produced in the producing process are harmful as well.‎ The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that most waste is dangerous in that “the production, distribution, and use of products--as well as management of the resulting waste--all result in greenhouse gas release.” Individuals can reduce their contribution by creating less waste at the start--for instance, buying reusable products and recycling.‎ In many countries the concept of extended producer responsibility is being considered or has been put in place as an incentive (动机) for reducing waste. If producers are required to take back packaging they use to sell their products, would they reduce the packaging in the first place?‎ Governments’ incentive to require producers to take responsibility for the packaging they ‎ produce is usually based on money. Why, they ask, should cities or towns be responsible for paying to deal with the bubble wrap (气泡垫) that encased your television?‎ From the governments’ point of view, a primary goal of laws requiring extended producer responsibility is to transfer both the costs and the physical responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.‎ 1. By mentioning the Swiss study, the author intends to tell us that .‎ A. the weight of e-goods is rather small B. e-waste deserves to be made good use of C. natural minerals contain more precious metals D. the percentage of precious metals is heavy in e-waste 2. The responsibility of e-waste treatment should be extended .‎ A. from producers to governments B. from governments to producers C. from individuals to distributors D. from distributors to governments 3. What does the passage mainly talk about?‎ A. The increase in e-waste.‎ B. The creation of e-waste.‎ C. The seriousness of e-waste.‎ D. The management of e-waste.‎ C I drove to a local supermarket one day. My shopping list was long but my wallet was light. Still, I needed to get a week’s worth of groceries for my family. I parked my car, looked down at my list, and hoped I could afford all the things.‎ As I approached the door, I saw an old man with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He said he was collecting for a local food bank. He handed me a second shopping list and asked if I could help them. I smiled back, took the list and walked into the store. I really wanted to help but wasn’t sure whether I could do that.‎ I walked through the store, getting what I needed. When I looked down at my full cart I wondered again if I had enough money to pay for all my things. Then as I put my own list back into my pocket I remembered the old man’s list under it. I smiled. I went and picked up two of the biggest boxes of rice for the food bank. The rice cost me another six dollars, and when everything was totaled, I had just enough money.‎ It takes so little to make our world a better place. A few dollars can help to fill a hungry child’s belly. A smile and a hug can help to heal a broken heart. An encouraging word can inspire someone to live on and to love others. A casual act of kindness can change others’ life. It is up to you, though. You can only think of yourself and those close to you while saving a few bucks on rice.‎ 1. We can learn from the first two paragraphs that .‎ ‎‎A. the author drove to the local supermarket every day A. the old man was actually begging for food for himself B. the author didn’t take much money with him that day C. the author had no interest in the old man 2. When the author took the list given by the old man, he .‎ A. thought highly of the old man’s behavior B. refused to take the shopping list to the store C. wasn’t sure if he could help him D. decided to give him a hand at once 3. Which of the following statements does the author probably agree with?‎ A. Nothing but smiles can help heal a broken heart.‎ B. It actually takes so little for us to make a difference to others.‎ C. Our world would be poor without kindness and help.‎ D. It is important for us to think of those who are in great need of rice.‎ 4. Which could be the best title for this passage?‎ A. A Pleasant Shopping Experience B. An Old Beggar C. A Long Shopping List D. A small Act of Kindness 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项.‎ People who seem to have all the luck are not usually blessed by a large amount of good fortune.
