B I can’t remember a time when my bedroom didn’t have a bookshelf. From Dr. Suess to Mother Goose, I had all kinds of books that progressed in size as I got older. My earliest memory of books was sitting on my bed at night with my mom reading to my older brother and me. And my first beloved book that was all mine was a children’s book about being a chosen child. As an adopted (收养的) child, this book helped me learn that my family was my very own because they chose me. As I got older, the books got thicker and more difficult. The first set of books I ever bought with my own money was L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. When in elementary school, there was a book catalog (目录) that would come out. We could take it home and have our parents help us order new books. Then the books would be sent to the school. There was nothing better than getting my little bag of books. My love for science fiction was deepened by my older brother’s love for it. Beyond being the person to introduce me to Star Trek and Doctor Who, it was his copy of The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks that got me really interested in science fiction. I read classics in high school. The first time I had the thought that I wanted to be a writer was after reading Edgar Allan Poe’s work. And his use of words floored me. I remember using his word “phantasmagorical” for a senior paper. Yeah, it’s no wonder I ended up an English major and English teacher passing on my love for the written word and the books students could hold in their hands. 4. What was the author’s earliest memory of books? A. She read some classics by herself. B. She was thirsty for children’s books. C. She was often read to by her mother. D. She borrowed books from her brother. 5. What happened after the author read her first favorite book? A. She loved her family much more. B. She hoped to have her own home. C. She planned to read more books. D. She found that she was adopted. 6. How did the author feel after getting some books on the book catalog? A. Lucky. B. Excited. C. Surprised. D. Disappointed. 7. How did the author become interested in science fiction? A. By reading Star Trek with her brother. B. By being introduced to Doctor Who. C. By talking about it with her brother. D. By reading The Sword of Shannara. C Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush — driving to a new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment. As it was all new to me, I took off my rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive. Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my cheeks (脸颊) burning red. I felt sick to my stomach. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected. I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. But after two or so hours, I received the most amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins — which is not a pleasant task — to find my priceless rings. I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. Unfortunately I did not get to meet her as she was not at work that day. 8. What can we say about the author’s first day at the clinic? A. Disorganized but special. B. Relaxing and good. C. Tiring and boring. D. Busy but fruitful. 9. What happened to the author? A. She threw her rings away carelessly. B. She received a gift from her husband. C. She failed to finish her work in time. D. She made mistakes during work. 10. How did the author feel after calling the lady? A. Thankful. B. Surprised. C. Frightened. D. Heartbroken. 11. What can we learn from the author’s experience? A. Smiles brighten people up. B. Strangers are usually of little help. C. An act of kindness can mean a lot. D. Where there is a will, there is a way. D My name is Deirdre Veneracion and I am a paraglider pilot. I’ve been paragliding since I was 11. My dad and I arrive at our local fly site on a June morning. We meet our instructor and spend the first 20 minutes watching the wind cycles. I go through my pre-flight steps and turn on my radio. At last, I take a step and feel the ground under me fall away. I feel the pressure of my weight on the canopy (伞衣). After 15 minutes of playing with the wind, my father radios me from the place where he is about to take off. “How is the wind?” “Perfect!” I say. Dad takes off behind me. I have done almost 100 flights and yet every flight amazes me just as much or even more than my first. I love the unpredictability of each flight. Every flight is different. After 15 minutes, I decide to land. Now, I’m over a rice field. It is a much smaller landing than most landing zones but it’s possible. Out of nowhere, I feel my canopy become unstable (不稳定的). It loses pressure and falls directly in front of me. I am falling. I have butterflies in my stomach. I pull my brake (制动器) line, in the hope that my wing will get pressure again but it doesn’t. I look towards my dad and see that he is also in trouble. It’s as if we were inside a washing machine being thrown up and down. I won’t make it to the landing zone in front of me. To my right is a narrow (狭窄的) stream with hardly any water in it. I make my decision: the narrow stream is my best chance of landing safely. As I touch down, I check on my dad and am glad to hear that he is fine. Local villagers come to check on me but, surprisingly, I am uninjured. This is one of those times when we are reminded that no preparation can prevent Mother Nature from surprising us. 12. What does the author do before taking off? A. She has a talk with her father. B. She watches the weather. C. She turns off the radio. D. She gives instructions. 13. What does the attraction of paragliding lie in the author’s eyes? A. The pleasant wind. B. The success of each flight. C. The excitement of landing. D. The uncertainty of each flight. 14. What kind of feeling does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 probably show? A. Nervousness. B. Happiness. C. Anger. D. Luck. 15. What happens in the process of the author’s landing? A. She hurts herself. B. She asks her dad for help. C. She sees a washing machine below. D. She changes her mind about the landing site. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 For most teens, bedtime is just a childhood memory. Looking shy, he sat down and started eating. The others around looked at him, puzzled, and some even laughed. However, after finishing the dumplings, he went up to the donation box on the counter, put one hundred yuan in it and left, leaving us all shocked and ashamed.
