One day he was running around a track that circled the high school football field while the football team was conducting their practice. When the players began running their races up and down the field, the man said to himself determinedly, “I'll just keep running if they don't stop.” So they ran and he ran. They kept on running and he kept on running. Finally, totally exhausted, the old man had to stop. When he stopped, an equally exhausted football player walked over to him and said, “Sir, I'm glad you finally stopped. Our coach has told us that we have to keep running as long as you are jogging! It seems to me that we can sometimes find ourselves in a similar kind of situation when it comes to conflicts—that is when we have different opinions about something with someone and get into an argument with him or her, our voices get raised. Neither side wants to be the first to give in, to stop speaking in anger. Everyone has the attitude, “I'll just keep on till he gives in.” So the other party stays mad. So we stay mad. And on we go, finally finding ourselves emotionally and even physically exhausted by the continuing animosity(敌意). Let me challenge you to do something very difficult. The next time you get into an argument, be the first to give in. Be the first to stop the shouting and the name-calling. Be the first to say, “I'm sorry.” It's the quickest way to stop that. As a saying goes, “A soft answer turns away extreme anger, but a harsh(严厉的)word stirs up anger.” 24.What happened to the old man that day? A. He guided the students to practise running. B. He joined the football team to play a game. C. He asked the players to take care of the football field. D. He decided to compete with the football players. 25.Why did the football player come to the old man? A. To show respect for his great courage. B. To praise him for his good performance. C. To express satisfaction with his stopping running. D. To complain to him about his keeping running. 26.What does the underlined word “conflicts” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Misunderstandings. B. Disagreements. C. Misfortunes. D. Disappointments. 27.What's the purpose of the last paragraph? A.To provide the effective way to make an apology. B.To show it is hard for us to take up the challenge. C.To warn us to control our bad emotion properly. D To advise us to take active action when we disagree with others. C Working with people from different cultures is a necessary skill for anyone in a culturally diverse work environment. Cultural variations in the workplace may range from simple regional differences, such as varying local languages, to different opinions on timeliness, productivity, and communication. There are several steps you can take to work effectively with people from different cultures. First you should become self-aware. If you have never worked with someone from a different culture before, it can be an adjustment. While you might meet with some challenges, you will likely find it a useful experience. Your first step is to put yourself in the right mood. Another way is to practice patience. It may take a period of time for you to get used to working with people from different cultures. Don't worry. That's normal. Try not to get annoyed if communication takes a little extra effort at first. For example, maybe you are now working with someone whose first language is not English. Instead of getting impatient if they don't understand your point, try to treat it as a learning experience. Be patient with yourself, too. It may take you some time to adjust to working with your new co-workers or customers, and that is OK. Besides, humor plays an important part. Remember that working in a new environment might be difficult for someone from a different culture. Whether you are on a call, or traveling to meet someone face to face, don't be afraid to lighten the mood. Humor is an excellent way to ease tension(紧张)in the workplace. It can serve as a way to make people feel comfortable and even more connected to each other. Accept differences. Part of choosing the right mood means that you are open to differences. If you go into a new situation where people might have different customs, you will find it easier to be accepted. Go to work knowing that people from different cultures might work differently, and that's to be expected. 28. What does the underlined word “diverse” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Different. B. Remote. C. Important. D. Familiar. 29. What can we know about self-aware from Paragraph 2? A. It can make your life more colorful. B. It can turn challenges into something beneficial. C. It can show people the right thinking pattern. D. It can help add to people's working experience. 30. Which of the following may the writer agree with? A. Patience is a good way to reduce stress at work. B. Differences in the workplace make jobs easier to deal with. C. Humor can make people at work closely connected. D. Cultural differences are mainly reflected in regional differences. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Keeping a good mood is important B. Accepting the differences benefits you a lot C. How to work with people from different cultures D. How to learn the culture differences and respect them D There are usually few things people want to do less than housework. But while washing the dishes and dusting the shelves can seem like troublesome things, a new study has shown just how important they are to general health and happiness. In fact, scientists now believe cleaning the home is more important to mental and physical health than other factors, such as the area you live in or how much you earn. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University say the housework is beneficial because of the exercise it takes to get the daily job done, which in turn affects mental health. Dr Wright, at the university's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and on a research team wanted to find out how income, education, the environment and health behavior, like smoking and exercise ,affect an older person's health. The study's 337 participants(参加者),from 65 to 94 years old, had to have at least one illness. They also had to have physical problems that prevented them from doing at least one basic daily task, such as bathing and dressing. Dr Wright said she was surprised to learn that housework affected the participants' physical and mental well-being more than other factors. “House cleaning kept them up and moving,” said Dr Wright. “A clean environment is helpful to treat some illnesses.” The study provided evidence that Wright had found in her visits:people living in a chaotic(混乱的)environment seemed less satisfied than those in a place that was neat and tidy.Wright hopes the study shows how important it is for older adults with disabilities and illnesses to continue physical activities, such as doing stretching exercises. 32. What can we infer from Paragraph 1? A. Some people are too busy to do housework. B. Some people do not think highly of doing housework. C. Some people have difficulty in doing housework. D. Some people do less housework than before. 33. How do Dr Wright and her team do their research? A. By observing the changes of the participants' behavior. B. By trying different treatments for the participants' illnesses. C. By limiting the participants' moving areas to certain places. D. By choosing those who are a little weak as the participants. 34. What's the effect of the living environment according to Dr Wright? A. It can decrease one's suffering. B. It can improve one's character. C. It can change one's lifestyle. D. It can affect one's feelings. 35. What does the text mainly tell us? A. The advantages of doing housework. B. The proper ways to do housework. C. The hidden meanings of doing housework. D. The different attitudes towards housework. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Below are some ways to show appreciation to your parents: Obey and respect them—This is a very important thing to do.
