He raised his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies(百合花)on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal ---the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets.‎ ‎ The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he remembered the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads----one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs;the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils (魔鬼) and poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.‎ He saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret, which as like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his hildhood, who entered on life together with him. But they had made their way to suceess and were now honored and happy on this New Year's night. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: "Come back, my early days! Come back”.‎ ‎ And his youth did return ,for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year’s Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.‎ ‎ Those who still remain at the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years have passed and your feet fall on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain: "Oh youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!"‎ ‎21. What does the underlined word"them"in the first paragraph refer to?‎ A. Eyes. B. Stars C. Lilies D People 22. What do we know about his friends from Paragraph 3? A. His father returned home B. His father died C. His father gave him two choices D. His father lived far away ‎24. What does the writer want to remind the readers in the last paragraph?‎ A. It's no use crying for help B. It's vital to value your childhood C. They should be careful at the entrance of life D. They should not wait to choose the right wav B As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are curious about the parts of their bodies and about the smiles of their mothers. Then they become interested in the physical world around them: the plants, the animals, the sky. Later, they become absorbed in the things that people have made: wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity perseveres. Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career in science.‎ Scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. Your heart is a pump that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and ‎ nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too. So your brain sends a ignal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.‎ Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask. "Why does the ocean water taste salty",scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, "What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year. "Scientists are hesitating about the answer to this question.‎ We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are ‎ curious.‎ ‎25. C. In dry seasons D. When salty water falls in. 27.  Why are people still curious? A. They know much about the world. B. They want to be scientists. C. They know nothing about the world.  D. They cannot explain many things. ‎ C ‎ Interactions between people and elephants have a long history. Elephants have been trained and used by human beings for thousands of years, for everything from transportation to construction to logging(伐木) to war.‎ In more recent times,Asian elephants have been used in entertainment and as a living“machine” to help move logs through the jungle as part of the logging industry. The latter changed in Thailand in 1989. when the Thai government banned the use of elephants in the logging industry.Owners of elephants had very little choice but to turn to tourism to earn enough to care for themselves and their elephants by offering elephant riding to tourists.‎ Mahouts are the elephant handlers who you will see riding or managing the elephants at any camp you visit. Traditionally, being a mahout is part of the family business, and a young family member is matched with a young elephant, and they spend most of their lives together. The traditional mahout life isn't easy. Since they are bonded to their elephant. they rarely have time off or time for family.‎ These years. younger mahouts in Thailand have been more likely to leave the mahout life to find jobs in the city, changing the dynamic and resulting in elephants having to get used to multiple mahouts. This can lead to additional stress on the elephant, or result in abuse by a mahout trying to manage an elephant that hasn't built any level of trust with him. ‎ Opponents of elephant riding may suggest that elephant rides be outlawed. My worry is that an immediate ban could lead to another massive change in how elephants are treated, similar to ending elephant logging in 1989. How will mahouts that are currently making a living and supporting their elephants through rides be able to continue to do so? The average lifespan of an elephant is 60 years. Any solution needs to take into account the long-term effects on the elephants currently employed giving rides.‎ ‎28. What will cause the ill treatment of some elephants? A. The great stress to make money B. The heavy load on the elephants C. Younger mahouts leaving for cities D. The owners’ mistrust of the elephants 29. What's the best title for the passage? ‎ ‎ A. Will You Go to Thailand? B. Why are Elephants Trained? C. How do Mahouts Train Elephants? D Should You Ride Elephants in Thailand? 30. Why does the author write this passage? A. To present a problem. I told her she wasn't getting paid enough to be working as hard as she was working. I told her that we, the customers, could wait and it was very bad for her health to be putting herself under such pressure. I told her that our expectations were not as hard as the ones she set for herself.Pamela told me she would slow down. W: OK. I'll hear from you then. Text 10 Agriculture develops differently in the world. In some places, it moves quickly while in others, it moves slowly. In the last two hundred years, farming has improved a lot in western countries. where new machines, chemicals, and farming methods have been making farms more and more productive For example, farmers in western Europe, the United States produce perhaps the most crops globally. ‎ However, many developing countries are still looking for ways to help themselves grow ‎ more food. In 1995. farmers in Eritrea began using fertilizers, new farming techniques, and ‎ better seeds.Two years later they were able to grow two to four times more wheat than before. ‎ In northemUganda, farmers now have a better way to harvest their most important crop, the ‎ cassava root. With hand-held tin knives, farmers get rid of a poison called cyanide, which is in the roots ‎ The can make a cassava root safe to eat in just one day. This is an important change, for ‎ sometimes people in Uganda are dying of hunger. The United Nations are still working hard to find ways to help the developing countries. F or example, Senegal needs irrigation systems to distribute water, while in Eritrea people need machinery that can process larger amounts of crops at a time.‎
