I Stand Here Ironing The story is set in the working class home of the narrator (叙述者), who comments that when her child Emily was born, they were poor. Her thoughts are about what she would have done differently while raising Emily if she had been more experienced. The mother is standing in the room, ironing and recalling the whole trip of her and her daughter’s life. Her feeling that she is responsible for her daughter’s suffering is the main idea of this short story. Odyssey As a great poem, Odyssey had been recited or sung for years and years before it was written down. It tells the story of old Greek war hero Odysseus’ dangerous journey home from the battlefield. He beats a cyclops through wisdom, chats with dead people, and faces the angry sea god before finally arriving home. The Chronicles of Narnia The book has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. Set in the kingdom of Narnia, a world of magic, beasts, and talking animals, the book narrates the adventures of various children. The main characters are all children from the real world, who are magically transported to Narnia, where they’re called upon by the lion Aslan to protect Narnia from evil. Of Mice and Men This book follows two farm hands looking for work: the bright George and the disabled but big-hearted Lennie, who doesn’t know his own strength. The two men don’t know the fact that even the simplest American dreams are often out of reach until the tale comes to an end. “Though short, this novel can really make us feel sad and bring about our sympathy,” said editor, Dawn Raffel. 1. My friend wanted to see the theatre department and luckily she ran into a theatre major who was happy to tell of his experiences there. She immediately fell in love with the place.I really wanted to see the studio arts department. The arts building seemed huge and splendid.I wandered inside but was unable to find a single person.I went to the admissions office and asked if they could find someone who could show me around.Strangely, they didn't know one single person in the studio arts department! Finally they told me to go back to the building and ask for “Stacy”. No last name, just “Stacy”.I thought this should be interesting. I returned to the building and there happened to be one office open and a woman was there. After I explained, she replied quickly,“Well, I can't help you.I'm working on the computer.”(How rude!) After hearing “Stacy”, she pointed to another office.I found the socalled “Stacy” and all she said was that I could go downstairs and look around if I wanted.I explained that I had already been downstairs and that no one was there! She just shrugged(耸肩) and didn't know what to say. It's hard to believe that there wasn't a single person to help me in such a wellknown university. D.Doctors C Natural disasters are nature’s anger, which can upset even the most developed countries and make them into ruins. There is nothing we can do to stop such disasters happening. In that case it is quite possible that we are all short of electricity, water, food, etc. The basic necessities to be stored for times of disasters are explained below. Drinking water is a must for any human to survive. It has to be stored based on the number of people in the household. A normal human would consume a gallon of water a day. Food is an important requirement. Especially in times of disasters, our bodies would be weak. Rich food is very important in such times of danger. Food like dry fruits would be ideal as they last long and give us energy. A First Aid Kit and basic medicines are a must and do remember to store some of them. Certain basic things such as scissors and soaps would be handy. It is a good idea to have a radio to be updated with the ongoing news. An Earthquake Preparedness Kit would be of great help in fighting against an earthquake in the places where earthquakes take place very often. However, this can happen anywhere in the world so it is a must and should be well equipped in advance. There are wind storms that can leave behind a trail of destruction. The US has suffered from many tornadoes. Taking steps in advance to handle such unforeseen circumstances (情况) is a must. It is a good idea to plan an ideal place which would be helpful in protecting you and your family from the storm. Floods and other natural disasters probably happen unexpectedly someday, so we need to make preparations for them. Do take steps in advance. Being well prepared is the only way that would help us recover from such disasters. 8. From the first paragraph we can learn that natural disasters_______ . A. can’t be prevented by man B. can be controlled by humans C. can take place more often D. will ruin the earth someday 9. Which kind of food is most suitable for storing according to the author? A.
