Here are some letters from our readers. ■ Yes many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders. People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision. The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others. ——Michael Horan ■ I loved the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads. I was walking across Altrincharn Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me. The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used. The police do nothing. What a laugh they are! The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的)jacket and tights at night and in the morning. They should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them. ——Carol Harvey ■ Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red. I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him. Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? It’s about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be traced and there might be an opportunity to claim. ——JML Write to Viewpoints of the newspaper. 1. Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that ________. A. drivers should be polite to cyclists B. road accidents can actually be avoided C. some pedestrians are a threat to road safety D. walking while using phones hum one’s eyes 2. Carol Harvey suggests that cyclists should ________. A. be provided with enough roads B. be asked to ride on their own lanes C. be made to pay less tax for cycling D. be fined for laughing at policemen 3. The underline word “they” in the third letter refers to ________. A. accidents B. vehicles C. pedestrians D. cyclists 4. The three letters present viewpoints on ________. A. real sources of road danger B. ways to improve road facilities C. measures to punish road offences D. increased awareness of road rules 【答案】1. C 2. B 3. D 4. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders”可知,Michael Horan认为骑自行车的人和司机都很危险。 由Carol Harvey所写的信中的“The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets”可知,Carol Harvey认为骑自行车的人应该使用自行车道去骑车,而且要戴着头盔。 由JML所写的信中的“Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim”可知,JML认为,骑自行车的人也应该遵守规定。 由文章开头“Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger. We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.” B According to the International Ecotourism Society, eco-travel is “responsible travel to natural areas that protects the environment, maintains the well-beings and involves education”. Eco-travel is on the rise, as more and more people become conscious about their carbon footprint. Expert from Boundless Journeys, Matt Holmes, who works-on travel experiences towards conserving areas said, “As scientists and non-scientists learn more about how we human beings are impacting the planet, I think. more people want to do what they can while still exploring the world. Our guests are definitely interested in that aspect of our journeys. Travelers can farm their own food in Italy, managing their use of water and using solar or wind power. They can also visit n family-run camp that cares for retired logging elephants in Myanmar, know a park entry fee goes to a conservation organization in Costa Rica, employ and train members of the local community or partner with a protection group. There are lots of options for seeking out greener holiday.” Most people believe that eco-travel is expensive and it is true. Matt explained “Anti-poaching patrols (巡逻) need to be paid, solar energy equipment costs a lot to install, building with environmentally friendly, materials is more expensive and so on. The extra cost is necessary, as you re paying to minimize your footprint and protect the places you visit, which is exactly what eco-travel is about. The financial success and sustainability (可持续性) of an eco- focused operation doesn’t come from thin air.” The industry is trying to make eco-travel affordable and make it accessible to the common people. 5. What is the positive influence of eco-friendly travel? A. It enables travelers to protect the environment while traveling B. It keeps human beings healthy and happy in a friendly atmosphere. C. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce eco-friendly tents made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home. Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof. Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr. Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr. Dunlop graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the City’s private companies which fund new businesses and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directors and won their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to MyHab and taken a share of 30 per cent in Mr. Dunlop’s business. The first Myhabs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year. Mr. Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics. For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team before the festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards. They can be personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior(外部的) advertising space. The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonhury having some 150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious. 8. “Eco-friendly tents” in paragraph 1 refer to tents . A. economically desirable B. favorable to the environment C. for holding music performances D. designed for disaster relief 9. Mr. Dunlop established his business . A. independently with an interest-free loan from Mint B. with the approval of the City’s administration C. in partnership with a finance group D. with the help of a Japanese architect 10. It is implied in the passage that . A. the weather in the UK. is changeable in summer B. most performances at British festivals are given in the open air C. the cardboard tents produced by Mr. Dunlop can be user-tailored D. cardboard tents can be easily put up and removed by users 11. The passage is mainly concerned with . A. an attempt at developing recyclable tents B. some efforts at making full use of cardboards C. an unusual success of a graduation project D. the effects of using cardboard tents on music festivals 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. Many television companies have used sports to attract views from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers. An attraction of sports programs for the major U.S. media company is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons — the slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance. Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率) are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computers, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computers. With such viewers, these programs don’t need high ratings to stay on the air. 12. Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs? A. Because there would be few viewers B. Because the advertisers would be off work. C. Because television programs would go slowly D. Because viewers would pay less for watching television. 13. In many families, men make decisions on _________. A. holiday trips B. sports viewing C. television shopping D. expensive purchases 14. Why are the ratings not important for golf and tennis programs? A. their advertisers are carmakers B. their viewers are attracted by sports C. their advertisers target at rich people. D. their viewers can afford expensive cars 15. What is the passage mainly about? A. Television ratings are determined by male viewers. B. Rich viewers contribute most to television companies. C. Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television. D. Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport events 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week.(运动节目是周末最受欢迎的节目,尤其是男性观众,他们一般不会在其它时间看电视)可推测出,如果没有运动节目,男性可能就不会看电视,那看的人就少了。 A. Because there would be few viewers(因为观众会更少)符合题意。故选A项。 根据文章第二段最后一句many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance.(许多男性决定家庭里关于电脑,车和保险的购买)可知,家里的大件都是由男性决定购买的,这些东西花销一般较高。 根据第三段的“It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers.” 和 “This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings.” C. their advertisers target at rich people.(他们的广告客户针对的是有钱人)符合题意。 Sports accounts for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract views from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers.(电视公司通过销售广告时间获得的收入中,体育运动所占份额呈增长之势。 C. Sports are gaining importance in advertising on television.(运动在电视广告中获得重要性)可以概括本篇主题。 How the Elderly Are Treated Around the World How cultures view and treat their elderly is closely linked to their most prized values and qualities. ____16____ In the US and UK, Protestantism (新教) is at play. Western cultures tend to be youth-centric, stressing qualities like independence. ____17____ It ties a person’s value to his or her ability to work – something that becomes weaker in old age. As their health becomes worse, the elderly in these cultures often move to old people’s homes and nursing homes. In France, parents are protected by law. It is difficult to imagine an Elderly Rights Law being a focus in the laws of many Western cultures. France did, however, pass a similar law in 2004. _____18_____ One was a group of official statistics showing France had the highest rate of pensioner suicides in Europe, and the other was the aftermath of a heat wave that killed 15,000 people, most of whom were elderly and had been dead for weeks before they were found. _____19_____ Native American cultures traditionally accept death as a fact of life. In many Native American areas, elders are respected for their wisdom and life experiences. Within Native American families, it’s common for the elders to be expected to pass down their learning to younger members of the family. The way to care for Chinese elders is changing. Chinese families traditionally view respect for one’s elders as the highest virtue, according to the Confucian tradition. Adult children are generally expected to care for their parents in their old age. _____20_____ Nursing homes are beginning to become a more socially acceptable option for elderly care. A. However, this tradition is beginning to break down due to rising lifetime and an aging population. B. In the African-American area, death is seen as an opportunity to celebrate life. C. Here’s what we can learn from other cultures about treating the elderly. D. But China faces the unique problem of tending to an increasingly elderly population. E. Native American elders pass down their knowledge. F. It was only passed following two disturbing events, though. G. This relates back to the Protestant work rules. C 17. G 18. F 19. E 20. How the Elderly Are Treated Around the World,此处需要一个承上启下的过渡句,既要对应全文主旨,又要引出下文,因此 C项(以下是我们可以从其他文化中学习到的对待老人的方法)符合语境。 Manuela got up earlier and bought two bags of cat food. Secondly, you should take training of security so that we can keep calm if faced with conflicts. Thirdly, our government and schools should provide surroundings that our students can be buried in studying. Because后of去掉 7. you→we 8. that→where 9. improve→improving 10. very→so 【解析】 【分析】 这是一篇说明文。 故将or改为and 。 6. 根据because+句子,because of +词,可知,因为we are too careless是句子,应该用because。故删除because后的of。 7. 故将you改为we. 8. 故将that改为where。 9. 的英语表达是so…that…。故将very改为so。 参考词汇:垃圾分类 garbage classification Dear editor, __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear editor, I am so glad to have the chance to join the debate. Now I want to say something about garbage classification. As we all know, some people would throw all waste like plastic, paper and glass into the same public dustbin, without thinking whether they are recyclable or not. But garbage classification is very important. On the one hand, without classifying, some waste will remain where they were placed for a long time. As a result, it will pollute the earth. On the other hand, waste is just the misplaced resources. We can recycle waste by classifying it and making full use of some leftovers. Thus, garbage classification is meaningful to us. We can do it just now. For example, we can collect plastic bottles and sell them to the waste shop and throw used batteries into the correct dustbin.
