He found it broken, and in need of a lot of repair work. His goal was to have everything done in time for his first service on Christmas Eve.‎ He worked hard. However, when John went to the church on Dec. 21, his heart sank: a large area of plaster (石膏) had fallen off the front wall due to a terrible storm the night before. John headed home, and on the way he stopped at a market selling items for charity.‎ One of the items was an exquisite handmade tablecloth. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. It started to snow. An old woman had missed her bus, and he invited her to wait in the warm church for the next one. As John put up the tablecloth the woman asked him to check the corner for the initials(名字首字母). They were her initials: she had made this tablecloth 35 years before. Then the war broke out, and forced her to get separated from her husband.‎ John wanted to give her the tablecloth, but she asked him to keep it for the church. John insisted on driving her home which he thought was the least he could do.‎ What a wonderful service he had on Christmas Eve! John noticed one old man staring at the tablecloth on the front wall. The man said it was similar to one that his wife had made many years before.‎ John brought the old man to the house where he had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped him climb the three flights of stairs to her apartment, and saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever have imagined.‎ ‎21. What did John decide to do according to paragraph 1?‎ ‎ A. Because she asked him to give her a hand.‎ ‎23. Why did the tablecloth draw the old man's attention?‎ ‎ A. Because he loved its colors. ‎ ‎ B. Because he had seen it in a church.‎ ‎ C. Because it was like the one his wife had made. ‎ ‎ D. Because it looked a bit strange hanging on a wall.‎ ‎24. What can we learn from the text?‎ ‎ A. John’s service on Christmas Eve was disappointing.‎ ‎ B. Everyone was surprised by the beauty of the tablecloth. ‎ ‎ C. The woman’s husband had to leave her because of a war.‎ ‎ D. The woman was excited to find the tablecloth and took it home.‎ ‎25. What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎ A. A new pastor who gave his first service with a couple’s help.‎ ‎ B. The gym was filled with cheerleaders (啦啦队队员), parents and friends. The walls were covered with posters made by the third and fourth graders at the school. And all the elementary, middle and high school unified teams were playing hard and having fun. Every basket, no matter which team scores, was cheered and celebrated.     Special Olympics support more than 20 unified games. What are unified games? They are programs designed for players with special needs. In the games, they play ‎ with kids who are volunteers, called unified partners. The special athletes are unable to play normally like other healthy kids, and some of them are wheelchair users. In basketball, the unified partners rebound (抢得篮板球), pass and sometimes push a special athlete's wheelchair. As Brian Ross, a seventh grader at St. Albans School in Washington, says, "You just try to help and get everyone to take part."     Some special athletes have come a long way to be where they are. Caleb Head is a 15yearold special athlete. When he started, Caleb would only stand at the door and watch. Then Caleb began to practice his shooting but still would not play in the games. Now Caleb runs up and down looking for his shot. The special athletes are not the only ones who benefit from unified sports; the unified partners do, too. Marla Grusin, whose son Tyler is a special athlete, says every kid should come to a Special Olympics game. If they do, they will learn "to share the ball" and that the game "is not all about me". ‎ ‎ Not a bad lesson for any athlete. ‎ ‎26. What's the main idea of Para 1? ‎ ‎ A. The meaning of unified games.           B. Special Olympics' development. C. The benefits of playing basketball.       D. An exciting unified basketball game.‎ ‎27. Who is probably Brian Ross? ‎ ‎ A. A cheerleader.            B. A special athlete.           ‎ ‎ C. A unified partner.            D. A basketball teacher.‎ ‎28. What happened to Caleb Head at the very beginning? ‎ ‎ A. He lost heart and gave up.‎ ‎ B. He practiced his shooting hard. ‎ ‎ C. He had no courage to play basketball.‎ ‎ D. He ran up and down looking for his shot. ‎ ‎29. Who are Special Olympics especially held for? ‎ ‎ A. The disabled students.  B. The best basketball players.‎ ‎ C. Volunteers who have special needs.  D. Anyone who loves cheerleading.‎ ‎30. What can we infer from the text?‎ ‎ A. Not all the children will benefit from the game.‎ ‎ B. Some special athletes have no interest in the game.‎ ‎ C. The students become more selfless by joining in the game.‎ ‎ D. The special athletes play the game as well as the healthy kids. ‎ ‎ C ‎ Destinee Whitaker was in fourth grade when she learned that millions of people around the world lack(缺乏)clean water.‎ ‎ “It was a problem that confused me for a long time,” said Whitaker, from the United States city of Philadelphia. “Water is a necessity.”‎ ‎ When she got to Carver High School of Engineering and Science, Whitaker carefully researched the problem and felt that she must do something about it.‎ ‎ Early in her senior year, Whitaker approached fellow members of the school’s National Honor Society with a proposal: They should raise money to buy water purification (净化) systems for people in need. Whitaker, the National Honor Society president, knew the systems would have to be easy to carry and able to operate without electricity. So she checked with a microbiologist(微生物学家)to make sure the system she had her eye on would fit the bill.‎ ‎ Once her classmates agreed to back the proposal, Whitaker took it upon herself to raise money. She organized a game where students bought tickets to guess how many pieces of candy a jar contained.‎ ‎ In the end, they raised $800—a large amount for a school where 70 percent of the students’ families are not well-off.‎ ‎ Whitaker soon found that raising money was the easier part of the project. Finding an organization that could deliver (递送) the water purification systems was a bigger puzzle. She approached some organizations about their possible connections but no one could help.‎ ‎ Then Whitaker connected with Joseph Sackor, who runs the Liberia Medical Mission—an organization that provides medical care to Liberians who lack health ‎ services. Sackor accepted the school’s money and agreed to deliver the systems to people who needed them.‎ ‎ Whitaker dreams of someday launching(发起)her own nonprofit organization to bring clean water to more people in need.‎ ‎ “Some students in Liberia can’t even go to school because their parents cannot afford to buy them bottled water,” Sackor said. “This money is huge.”‎ ‎31. What problem did Whitaker want to solve?‎ ‎ A. Low public awareness of healthy lifestyles.‎ ‎ B. Lack of clean drinking water.‎ ‎ C. Lack of education. ‎ ‎ D. Global poverty.‎ ‎32.What does the underlined phrase “fit the bill” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?‎ ‎ A. Meet their needs. B. Be cheap enough.‎ ‎ C. Need improvement. D. Be difficult to operate.‎ ‎33. What did Whitaker think the most difficult part of her project was?‎ ‎ A. Making a proposal for the project.‎ ‎ B. Raising money to buy the equipment.‎ ‎ C. Calling on her classmates to support it.‎ ‎ D. Finding an organization to deliver the equipment.‎ ‎34. What does Whitaker want to do in the future?‎ ‎ A. Set up a charity organization to help more people.‎ ‎ B. Provide bottled water to Liberian students.‎ ‎ C. Study medicine to help those in need.‎ ‎ D. Live and work in Liberia.‎ ‎35. What’s the best title of the text?‎ ‎ A. Water is a necessity. B. Give the gift of water.‎ ‎ C. How to solve problems. D.
