With her busy work schedule, she didn’t think she could take care of a dog. In fact, she wasn’t looking for a furry friend at all. But then she met Finn. Today, the 34-year-old actress, who’s known for films Mamma Mia, is a dog owner and a spokeswoman at the welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society. “I can’t imagine my life without him,” Seyfried says of 6.5-year-old Australian shepherd Finn, who is allowed on her U.S. set. If for some reason he can’t join Seyfried on location --- like on a recent trip when she traveled from France to China, Seyfried requests from her dog sitter twice — daily videos of him. Now with a new video for Best Friends Animal Society, she calls herself Finn’s “stage mother.” Seyfried and Finn shot an ’80s-themed video for the # 9000StepsChallenge, which asks animal owners to walk 9,000 steps with their pets on the ninth day of the month to raise awareness to the fact that more than 9,000 dogs and cats are euthanized ( 安 乐 死 ) in shelters each day because there’s not enough room. As for the video shoot, in which Seyfried and Finn walked the 9,000 steps — it was more exhausting than a long walk. Seyfried was Finn’s trainer on the shoot. She believes that instead of being Finn’s cp-star, she’ll go back to being BFFs. 24.Why did Seyfried originally refuse a pet dog? A. She wasn’t not yet a spokeswoman. B. She wasn’t used to being with a dog. C. She was too busy to care for a dog. D. She had not enough room for a dog. 25.Who does the underlined word “him” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Finn. B. Seyfried. C. The dog sitter. D. Finn’s best friend. 26.Why did Seyfried shoot the video together with Finn? A. To show how deep she loves Finn. B. To train Finn to have a long walk. C. To take part in an animal cp-star show. D. To call on public attention to pets’ life. 27. Which section of a newspaper is this text most likely from? A. News B. Life C. Education D. Sports C If you have ever had a cat, or have watched one of the many funny cat videos online, you’ll know that cats have a mind of their own. A lot of the things they do are hard to understand---they like to climb up tall furniture, fit themselves in small spaces and attack small objects for no reason at all. Now scientists have managed to figure out what exactly is going on in the brains of our little friends. According to Tony Buffington, a professor at Ohio State University in the US, cats’ strange behavior largely comes from their way of life back in the wild. “Cats today still have many of the same instincts(本能)that allowed them to live in the wild for millions of years.” he said in a TED Talk. “To them, our homes are their jungles.” In the wild, cats are hunters. Their bodies and great balancing abilities allow them to climb to high spots to better look at the environment. Even though they don’t have to hunt any more in human houses, they still keep the old habit of viewing the living room from, for example, the top of the refrigerator. Cats’ hunting instinct is also what makes them attack small things like keys and USB drives. In the wild, they hunt whatever they can get, and most of the animals they kill are small. However, cats can also be prey. This explains why they like to stay in small spaces like drawers or washing machines — they are hiding, or they think they are hiding, from more dangerous animals. This is also why cats prefer a clean box: a smelly one could easily show enemies where they are. Knowing how cats’ minds work is not only useful for better understanding them. It may also help cats’ owners to better meet cats’ needs. For example, owners could try to make climbing easier for cats by moving their furniture around. They could also use “food puzzles” to make eating feel more like hunting instead of just giving food to the cats. 28.According to Tony Buffington, ________. A.cats’ strange behavior is hard for people to understand B.cats are more used to living in the wild than in humans’ homes C.cats behave strangely mainly because of some instincts in the wild D.cats’ instincts are as helpful to them today as they were millions of year ago 29.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text? A.Cats like to climb up high because they want to hide from dangerous animals. B.Cats attack keys and USB drives because they have a habit of hunting small animals. C.Cats enjoy staying in small spaces because they usually live in small caves in the wild. D.Cats’ preference for a clean box probably has something to do with their hunting instincts. 30.The underlined word “prey” in Paragraph 5 probably means _________. A.an animal that is too lazy B.an animal that likes hiding games C.an animal that keeps itself clean D.an animal that is hunted 31.This article is mainly written to _________. A.explore the reasons behind cats’ strange behavior B.describe cats’ past wild experience to readers C.tell cat owners how to make life easier for cats D.compare cats’ behavior in human homes with that in the wild D In this digital age, people measure their popularity by the number of likes and followers they get on social media. But as it turns out, people are happiest when their friends are high quality – not high quantity. Scientists from the University of Leeds, UK, studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1,500 people. Those who took the survey gave details about their age, social interactions, and how satisfied they were with their social lives. The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally tended to be happier than those who had a large number of superficial(关系浅表的) friends. “Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Wandi Bruine de Bruin, one of the researchers. Bruine de Bruin found that older people tended to have smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles tended to be closer to them. Younger people, on the other hand, tended to have bigger circles that were made up of “peripheral(次要的)others”—people who are not true friends, but just people they know. These people had no influence on the younger interviewees’ happiness. The results of the study show that the opinion society has about old people being sad and lonely might not be accurate. “The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks didn’t prevent social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults tend to report better well-being than younger adults,” said Bruine de Bruin. 32.According to the study, people tend to be happier when they _____. A.have a small circle of close friends B.are satisfied with their work and lives C.have a lot of followers on social media D.make friends with people who are older 33.What do we know from Paragraphs 4 and 5? A.Older people’s friends seem to be of higher quality. B.Young people don’t need to make peripheral friends. C.Older people’s happiness has nothing to do with their friends. D.Both old and young people find it hard to make close friends. 34.Which word might Bruine de Bruin use to describe older adults? A.Sad. B.Happy. C.Lonely. D.Superficial. 35.What is the focus of the story? A.Different types of friends. B.Changes in people’s happiness levels. C.Interactions between old and young people. D.The relationship between happiness and number of friends. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 You know that eating healthy, staying active, and solving a few brain games can help keep your memory. But the following lesser-known habits work wonders too. 1. 36 When we sit with our shoulders bent forward, this defeated position actually causes us to feel anxious or depressed — which makes it harder to think clearly and remember things. Conversely ( 反过来 ), straight upright posture apparently improves memory because it boosts blood and oxygen flow to the brain. 2. Exercise — Once Having trouble remembering faces? 37 In a study, pictures of faces were shown to older folks after they pedal a stationary bike ( 健 身 车 )at an intense pace or simply sit on a self-pedaling bike. On average, people remembered the faces better after the intense exercise. What’s more, the memory gains after a single workout were similar to the gains after 3 months of regular exercise. 3. Limit TV Every parent and grandparent has heard that too much screen time can hurt a child’s cognitive development. 38 According to a study, people (aged 50 or older) who watched more than 3.5 hours of TV a day for 6 years experienced a greater drop in verbal memory test scores than those who watched less. 4. Draw aimlessly A research shows those who drew the words remembered the most when recalling words. That’s because while some parts of the brain about getting memory back become worse as people grow older, the picture processing regions usually don’t. 39 5.Walk Backward 40 Walk back! Backward motion — whether real, imagined, or watched — helps people remember the information better than sitting still and, in most cases, better than forward motion. It may be that moving backward in space mentally helps us move back in time to the moment we learned something. A. Sit Tall. B. Stand Straight. C. Start more workouts. D. Sweat for physical exercise. E. Thus sketching (画素描)can help adults keep their memory sharp. F. But what about those at the other end of their life span? G. In order to fight against the virus, the students in China have to study at home on computers instead of going to school. As for online teaching, it has two sides. On the one hand, it not only can save time so that we can do more other things like taking up new hobbies, but also can be convenient for our daily life and study. On the other hand, online teaching will increase the time length of facing the computer, which will be harmful to our health. Moreover, it’s short of learning atmosphere to study online. Last but not the least, some students may cheat in class. While having class, they are playing computer games at the same time! As for me, I prefer to study in classroom because I really miss my teachers and classmates. And it really makes me feel uncomfortable when I sit in the same way studying on computers without moving. Sometimes the network signal is so weak that it drives me crazy! That’s why I’m not a fan of online teaching.
