One such example is the word “matter”. In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language. Let’s get the heart of the matter----a matter of principle(原则). If someone says that you owe(欠) him $50, but you don’t, a friend might say, “well, you could pay him the $50. it’s not that much money. Then you won’t have to hear him say it anymore. ”But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It’s a matter of principle. There is another way to use the word “matter”. But be careful with your choice of words. If you ask someone, “What’s the matter? ”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What’s the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude(粗鲁的). In fact, when you say, “What’s the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid. Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it. Let’s say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude. But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn’t matter to me.” does not sound rude. In this situation, “it doesn’t matter” shows you are easy-going(随和的). No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it’s only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter. 21. We can infer(推断) from the text that the word “matter”_______. A. has a wide use B. can mean money C. is the most used English word D. has the most different expressions 22. What is the author’s suggestion in Paragraph 4? A. Every penny counts(起作用). B. Stick to what is right. C. Follow your friend’s advice. D. Be careful when making friends. 23. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capital Building, the nature center, and the zoo. I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This morning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser(老忠实泉). I had read about it in my book, Sightseeing in California; Where You Should Go. You have probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in Yellowstone National Park. This California geyser is sometimes called "Little Old Faithful." When we arrived, California's Old Faithful was only a calm pool of water. The geyser didn't look very deep. "What's the big deal?" I wondered. As I turned, I saw some steam rising from the water. Before I knew it, there was hot water shooting up about 60 feet into the air. We could not believe our eyes! It continued for almost three minutes. Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the water temperature was about 95℃. This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air. My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than California's Old Faithful Geyser. I'd love to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home. I'll see you soon! Your friend, Bennetto 25. According to the text, Bennetto . B. ask Jorge to visit Old Faithful Geyser. C. express his thankfulness to Aunt Gloria. D. give Yellowstone National Park some advice. C I have many new teachers in high school, but Lori Runkle, my English Language and Composition teacher, is my favorite one. Ms. Runkle enjoys getting to know more about students, so I have many chances to talk with her after class. I have always wanted to become a journalist(新闻记者). Since Ms. Runkle used to be a journalist back in the United States, she has introduced many helpful journalistic writing skills to me. Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to listen to a journalist’s speech, which helped me better understand current events(时事). Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are required to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. It requires a lot of deep thinking and I really learn quite a lot from it. I love Ms. Runkle very much. She not only helps me to get good scores, but also acts as a good friend and always gives me advice on life. 28. After class, the author_______. A. seldom sees Ms. Runkle B. talks with Ms. Runkle quite a lot C. enjoys introducing Ms. Runkle to her friends D. often invites Ms. Runkle to different activities 29. We can infer from the text that Ms. Runkle is ______. A. friendly and helpful B. kind and humorous C. clever and active D. strict and boring 30. The author’s favorite part of Ms. Runkle’s class is when Ms. Runkle______. A. tells them how to get good scores B. asks them questions about the world C. asks them to describe current events D. tells them about events that are happening 31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To express how much she misses Ms. Runkle. B. To look back on her special high school life. C. To describe an unforgettable teacher. D. To show what makes a good teacher. D They have invaded a river in Australia, a part of the sea in Canada and a lake in Colorado. They settle in and their population grows. Soon there are thousands of them. They turn water brown and eat everything in sight. Experts who study rivers and lakes say goldfish are a real problem. And it’s not the fish that started it all. It’s humans. Pet owners get tired of the little Nemos and Dorys in their fish tanks(鱼缸). They take their fish to a nearby stream. They send their pets into the wild. It seems more humane than flushing a pet down the toilet. But many invasive species get into rivers and lakes this way. When goldfish live in open water, they cause big problems. These goldfish have more food than goldfish in a tank. That means they grow quickly. Some weigh as much as four pounds! Giant goldfish search for plants, fish eggs, and other treats at the bottom of the river or lake, which makes the water cloudy. Native fish have a hard time living in these conditions. They often die. Once goldfish take over, they are hard to remove. Officials have tried poisoning(毒死) them. But poison kills native species too. The best way to protect native fish is to keep pet fish out of rivers and lakes in the first place. People should give unwanted fish back to pet stores. And there are special ponds where pet fish can be left. They can live there without harming other fish. But sometimes nature solves its own problems. In 2015, officials in Colorado discovered that thousands of goldfish had taken over a lake. Officials thought about feeding the fish to birds. They thought about draining and refilling the lake. But before they could decide what to do, help came from an unexpected source: A group of hungry pelicans(鹈鹕)ate up all of the invaders. 32. What is the problem mentioned in Paragraph 1? A. The number of goldfish is falling. B. The meat of goldfish is unhealthy. C. Goldfish are easily eaten by other fish. D. Goldfish cause trouble to the environment. 33. What does the author think of what some pet owners do? A. It is humane. B. It is harmful. C. It is misleading. D. It is meaningless. 34. What may happen after goldfish live in open water? A. They get really big. B. They eat native fish. C. The water becomes attractive. D. The water becomes poisonous. 35. How was the problem in Colorado solved in 2015? A. Pelicans ate all of the goldfish. B. Officials poisoned the goldfish. C. Officials fed the goldfish to birds. D. The goldfish were brought to special ponds. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to make friends at a new school Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 36 However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends. For example, someone who does a lot of sport may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot. 38 Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible! Believe in yourself. A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don’t keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. 39 Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you’re from. Remember people’s names. You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. 40 Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname(昵称).
