In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need. Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids' sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course. Using safety guidelines and his daughter's bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded — along with Mickelson's bunk bed output.“That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,” he said. “The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.” With the motto“No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough - 17 - choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making “great money to zero money”. He's never looked back. “I found that the need I have isn't financial,” he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids' faces, knowing that I can make a difference.” 4.Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace? A.To help the poor children. B.To make a big fortune. C.To inspire his community. D.To get more donations. 5.What do we know about Luke Mickelson? A.He had his own fish farm. B.He changed his career from time to time. C.He used to sleep on the floor when he was a kid. D.He originally had a relaxing and pleasant life. 6.How did other people react to Mickelson's project? A.They showed little interest in it. B.They were supportive and involved in it. C.They were doubtful about the safety of the bunk bed. D.They volunteered to buy beds with their own money. 7.What is Mickelson's attitude to the nonprofit? A.Ambiguous. B.Defensive. C.Cautious. D.Positive. C [2020·山西太原五中阶段检测]The Arctic Circle — the habitat of polar bears and decreasing sea ice at the top of the world — hit 32 degrees Celsius last week. This was the temperature in Banak, Norway on July 30, though some Norwegian areas even reached a couple degrees warmer, according to the European Severe Weather Database. Banak sits atop northern Europe, over 350 miles above the bottom edge of the Arctic Circle. The Northern Hemisphere and Europe itself have been repeatedly scorched by both record and nearrecord temperatures this summer as a consequence of overall rising global temperatures. In the past 40 years, Earth's climate has experienced an accelerated warming trend, which adds an extra level of background warming to hot spells — making heatwaves - 17 - more extreme, climate scientists have said. A photo of what appears to be Scandinavian folks taking a dip in a river while reindeer — the coldadapted herbivores (食草动物) — cooled off in the water beside them is perhaps the best example of just how hot it is in parts of the Arctic Circle right now. The“warm season” in Banak is short, lasting around three months, but the very warmest day of the year, around July 23, is usually around 62 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏度) — about 30 degrees cooler than temperatures there now. Overall, temperatures in northern Europe are between 14 to 21 degrees Fahrenheit, 10 to 6 degrees Celsius above average. Alltime temperature records were set in both Norway and Finland on July 30, including 86 degrees Fahrenheit, 30 degrees Celsius, in Cape Verde, near Banak, though extreme or nearrecord temperatures blanketed the region. Persistent heat and dryness this summer have transformed normally green European countries into brown and yellow lands, and the continent's extreme heat is expected to persist. Andrew Derocher, a professor at the University of Alberta who studies polar bears, said climate change is shrinking the ice bears usually hunt on, making them faced with the danger of extinction. 8.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “scorched” in Paragraph 3? A.Burned. B.Achieved. C.Scored. D.Reached. 9.What does the photo show according to the author? A.Scandinavian folks like to swim in a river. B.Reindeer have adapted to the cold climate. C.The ice there has totally been melted into water. D.The temperature of the Arctic Circle now is high. 10.What can you learn from Professor Derocher's words? A.Maybe bears will die out in the near future. B.Climate change is threatening polar bears. C.He is worried about the shrinking of the sea ice. D.He advises people to do something to improve the condition. 11.Where may you find this article? - 17 - A.In a fashion magazine. B.In a news report. C.In a geography textbook. D.In a travel handbook. The very first World Environment Day took place in 1974, established by the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment that took place in 1972. Each year the United Nations pick a theme and a host city where anyone who is concerned about the environment can talk about environmental topics with others, followed by different kinds of exhibits to promote environmental awareness. Environmentalists, academics and scientists come together to bring new ideas on the table concerning the environment. The 2018 World Environment Day is hosted by India, and the theme is Beat Plastic Pollution. It urges people to explore and choose supportable alternatives like paper or cloth bags to reduce the production and use of disposable plastic, which makes up 10% of all of the waste. Even though the United Nations pick a specific host city every year, people around the world still celebrate World Environment Day in their hometowns with parades (游行), concerts, cleaning up and tree planting and all kinds of green actions to work towards having a beautiful planet and battling pollution. World Environment Day is not a public holiday, so you won't be getting the day off work or school, but if you want to celebrate, why not bring it to the attention of your parents, friends, colleagues or classmates? World Environment Day is all about working together to take action for the planet, so try to get everyone you know interested in helping do something. However, there will be drawbacks to live there as well as advantage. On the positive side, people will be able to escape from the crowding cities, but will have clear views of the earth and stars. On the other hand, the moon is a unfriendly place for humans. First of all, people will have to wear special suits and if their equipment fails, it will probably die. Secondly, they will have to get used to be weightless. Finally, they'll probably miss the plants and wildlife that exists on the earth. In all, the moon might be an ideal place where humans take over a holiday or scientists carry out research, but not a place for ordinary people to live all the time. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ - 17 - ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 课时作业22 课时练(一) 阅读理解 第一节 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇应用文,介绍了四个旅游观光的好地方,这四个地方各具特色,都非常值得一游。 根据Kihei,Hawaii部分中的“Here, you'll witness some of the best sunsets of your life”可知,游客在这里可以欣赏美丽的晚霞。 根据Panama City, Panama部分中的“invite you and your family”;Jupiter, Florida部分中的“with rates for a family of four”;San Diego, California部分中的“Here, a family of four”以及Kihei, Hawaii部分中的“Here, you'll witness... your kids play in the - 17 - Pacific”可知,这四个旅游观光地都适合家庭旅游,因此B项正确。 根据第一段中的“Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need”可知,Mickelson创建这个非盈利组织是为了帮助贫困儿童,故选A项。 根据第二段中的“But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course”可推知,Mickelson一开始过着轻松、舒适的生活,故选D项。 根据第三段中的“He recruited friends and family members to help around the holidays. As the word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded”可知,Mickelson的朋友和其他家庭成员都来帮忙,随着消息的传播,更多人参与进来。 根据第三段“The Northern Hemisphere and Europe itself have been repeatedly scorched by both record and nearrecord temperatures...” 根据第五段“A photo of what appears to be Scandinavian folks taking a dip in a river... is in parts of the Arctic Circle right now.” 根据最后一段“Andrew Derocher... said climate change is shrinking the ice bears usually hunt on, making them faced with the danger of extinction.” 根据第一段“The Arctic Circle — the habitat of polar bears and decreasing sea ice at the top of the world — hit 32 degrees Celsius last - 17 - week.” 根据第一段中的“to inspire people around the globe to take an active part in environmental protection and learn more about ways we can help to guarantee the future of our planet is safe”可知,世界环境日的目的是鼓励人们积极参与环境保护并学会很多方法来帮助确保地球将来的安全,故选B项。 根据第二段中的“where anyone who is concerned about the environment can talk about environmental topics with others”以及“Environmentalists, academics and scientists come together to bring new ideas on the table concerning the environment”可知,人们主要是在这一天讨论环境问题,故选C项。 根据第三段中的“Beat Plastic Pollution”可知,2018年的主题是“塑战速决”,再结合画线词前面的“It urges people to explore and choose supportable alternatives like paper or cloth bags”和后面的“which makes up 10% of all of the waste”可知,“disposable plastic”造成大量资源浪费,所以“一次性的”符合语境,故选D项。 本段中的一些提示词,如“turning off the lights”“Turn off the lights”等也暗示了本题的答案,故选E项。 空前句子中的“times of day”与F项中的“Other times of day”形成对应关系,故选F项。 根据下文的“put up signs”“using signs”“some signs”提示词可以判断答案为A项。 4.A 根据下文中的“The whole family sifted (筛) and sorted them”可推知,村民们把采摘的栗子带回家,倒出来,然后才能进行筛选和分类,故选A项。 5.B 根据下文中的“the small ones would jump to the __16__ of the bag and the larger ones would stay on the top of the bag”可推知,整个家庭根据栗子的大小进行筛选和分类,故选B项。 12.C 根据上文的“he could sell out of all the chestnuts”可知,他能够卖光自己所有的栗子,然后开心地开着空卡车回家,故选C项。 16.D 根据下文中的“and the larger ones would stay on the top of the bag”可推知,小些的栗子会快速移动到袋子的底部,而大些的栗子会留在上面,故选D项。 - 17 - 18.B 根据该句中的“This is not an accident but”可推知,这并非是意外,而是必然的结果,故选B项。 19.C 根据空后的“or complain when they hear bad news”可知,此处与“complain”并列,故C项符合语境。 20.A 根据上文年轻人的回答“‘If you put your heart into it, you will find the right way’”和本句中的“if you use your head”可推知,A项符合语境。 allow sb. to do sth. 课时练(三) 写作 第一节 短文改错 - 17 - The idea of living on the moon is no science fiction. I have a great piece of news to tell you. I've been informed to attend the International Teens Forum to be held in Shanghai on Jan. 15, 2020. My plan is to share my concerns and comments about the climate change at the forum and I've already included a speech attached to the email. As we all know, you've been focusing on this matter for years. May I trouble you to do me a favor and check it and make necessary improvements on it? If you could point out the mistakes I made in grammar or framework, that would be nice. Your advice for the speech will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
