While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour a week to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries, saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity (人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting. 24. Why was the bike so important to the couple? A. The man’s job was bike racing. B. They used it for work and daily life. C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed. D. It was their only possession. 25. We can infer from the text that . A. life was hard for the young family. B. people were busy before Christmas C. the stranger brought over the bike D. the couple worked 60 hours a week. 26. How did people get to know the couple’s problem? A. From a newspaper. B. From radio broadcasts. C. From TV news. D. From a stranger. 27. What do the couple learn from their experience? A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. One should take care of their bike. C. An act of kindness can mean a lot. D. News reports make people famous. C Going green seems to be a fad (时尚) for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle. On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond the easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task. With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps. Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyles. We now shop at organic (有机的) stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home- made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished. Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things-and help our planet. 28. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Keeping Open-Minded B. Protecting the Planet C. Going Green D. Celebrating Our Green Year 29. It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because . A. they were expected to follow the green fad B. they needed to perform unusual green tasks C. they were unwilling to reduce their energy D. they didn’t know how to educate other people 30. What did the couple do over the course of Our Green Year? A. They sold their home-made food. B. They ignored others’ ungreen behavior. C. They chose better chemical cleaners. D. They tried to get out of their ungreen habits. 31. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The couple may continue their project in the future. B. The government will give support to the green project. C. Some people disagree with the couple’s green ideas. D. Our Green Year is becoming a national campaign. D Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation? UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”. Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on .which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest. “We didn’t take any notice of it” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future. 32. The underlined sentence ‘"the opposite is true” in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees . A. compete for survival B. depend on each other C. protect their own wealth D. provide support for dying trees 33. “Mother trees” are extremely important because they . A. look the largest in size in the forest B. know more about the complex “tree societies” C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans D. pass on nutrition to young trees 34. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to . A. how forestry industry develops B. how trees grow old C. how “tree societies” work D. how young trees survive 35. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans B. Young Trees Are .In Need Of Protection C. Trees Contribute To Our Society D.
