It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building’s end.‎ The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed proper. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.‎ Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater’s location(位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouse.”‎ Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were refused because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping center on the land where the theater is located.‎ The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater had shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.‎ ‎24. In what way was yesterday’s cleanup at the Plaza special?‎ A. It made room for new equipment. ‎ B. It signaled the closedown of the theater.‎ C. It was done with the help of the audience.‎ D. It marked the 75th anniversary of the theater. ‎ ‎25. Why was The Last Picture Show put on?‎ A. It was an all-time classic.‎ B. It was about the history of the town.‎ C. The audience requested it.‎ D. The theater owner found it suitable.‎ 26. What will probably happen to the building?‎ A. It will be repaired.‎ B. It will be turned into a museum.‎ C. It will be knocked down.‎ D. It will be sold to the city government.‎ 27. What can we infer about the audience?‎ A. They are disappointed with Bradford. ‎ B. They are sad to part with the old theater.‎ C. They are supportive of the city officials.‎ D. They want to have a shopping center very much.‎ C Car washes are a common sight throughout Nigeria, but Madinat Aliyu’s roadside business is very special: she is the only woman car-washer in the north of the country.‎ ‎“This job has caused me a lot of problems,” said the 27-year-old, checking cars waiting to be cleaned in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara state.‎ Aliyu took up her work two years ago, hoping to use the 7,000 naira (£28) she earned every month to put her younger sisters and brothers through school following the death of their mother, the only one who made money to support the family. But her family begged her to stop doing this job, and she has received “judgment and warnings” from strangers too.‎ ‎“My grandmother cried for many days. Some people thought it was a joke to bring more customers. Others said if she is doing it for money, let’s just give her money to stop bringing us shame,” she said as she got water from a well by the roadside. “But I hate laziness or depending on somebody else.”‎ However, Aliyu has admirers. “Some customers only allow her to wash their cars,” said her colleague (同事) Shamsudeen Mohammed. “I was trained to wash cars by men, and I can honestly tell you women are better to work under,” he added.‎ Recently another woman came to Aliyu to ask for advice on starting her own car wash. “Unfortunately her family discouraged her. I told her, if you listen to them, you will find yourself begging or marrying a man who is older than your grandfather,” she said.‎ Though she is considered a pariah (贱民) by many, Aliyu has no plans to stop her work. “I see men doing something and I think I can do it too.”‎ ‎28. Madinat Aliyu washes cars mainly to _____.‎ A. make a living B. learn about cars C. meet her future husband D. know the life of the poor ‎29. From the fifth paragraph, we know Shamsudeen Mohammed _____.‎ A. thought Aliyu did a good job B. trained Aliyu to wash cars C. had more customers than Aliyu D. liked to work with men ‎30. As a woman car-washer, Aliyu _____.‎ A. gets her family’s support ‎ B. dreams of going to school C. is thought highly of by strangers D. sets an example for the women in Nigeria ‎31. Which of the following can best describe Aliyu?‎ A. Shy but smart.          ‎ B. Independent and confident.              ‎ C. Honest but lazy.        ‎ D. Humorous and imaginative.‎ D People who realize and master the art of small talk can use it to improve relationships. Small talk can lead to “big” talk — more important discussions. Using small talk, you can achieve big results. But many people do have fears that hold them back from making small talk.‎ For one thing, those who refuse to make small talk usually fear the unknown. When I was little, my mom said, “Don't talk to strangers!” For some people, that childhood fear of strangers continues into adulthood.‎ Suppose you are at a business networking event and have checked out who is there and found potential (潜在的) conversation partners. You're ready to make your move, but there are butterflies in your stomach. You are too frightened to introduce yourself to total strangers.‎ Consider a different situation for the next networking event you attend. To overcome your nervousness, you can think of yourself as an event's host and not its guest. As a host, you would introduce yourself to people you don't know and introduce them to others. You can play the role of the host even though you are not the actual host. Get in the habit of holding out your hand first and saying, “Hi, my name is ...”‎ Another reason why people refuse to open their mouth is the fear of rejection(拒绝). Anytime you open your mouth and speak, you risk rejection. If you never talk to people, you won't be rejected. But if you never talk to people, you will also be very lonely.‎ ‎ The best way I've found to overcome the fear of rejection is to focus on how I feel when I am accepted.‎ So ask yourself: what do I have to lose? Nothing! What do I have to gain? Possibly everything! Think back to when you first met your best friend or any important person in your life. How did it all start? You probably started with small talk.‎ ‎32. In Paragraph 1, the author wants to tell us that small talk is _____.‎ A. worth doing                     B. hard to make C. often ignored                   D. very interesting ‎33. The underlined part “there are butterflies in your stomach” probably means you are _____.‎ A. busy                B. nervous C. confident                D. excited              ‎ ‎34. When you are at a business networking event, you are advised to _____.‎ A. talk with the host             B. behave yourself C. try to be helpful             D. play an active role ‎35. What's the purpose of the text?‎ A. To advise.                      B. To discuss.‎ C. To describe. ‎ Do you want to put a smile on someone’s face?Maybe make their day a little bit brighter? 36 In fact, many things can be done as a part of your normal routine and cost little or nothing. Try out one or more of the following ways today to put smiles on their faces:‎ ‎1. 37 Handwritten notes that are given to encourage, not just for thanking someone for a gift, are rare. That makes handwritten notes even more special. Start a new practice of sitting down and writing an encouraging note on a regular basis.‎ ‎2.Take a friend out to lunch or invite him to your home. 38 If you feel like being more adventurous, throw a party for several of your friends.‎ ‎3.Send a meal to someone you know that is sick or having a rough time. We have all been sick and know the last thing you want to do is be out of bed. There are also times when life is hard. 39 ‎ ‎4.Ask a friend if you can take care of their kid for a day or evening. If you have been a parent, you know the value of being able to have a few hours of free time without worrying about the children. 40 Offer to do it when the parents want to relax themselves.‎ Besides, there is one more way that can’t be ignored. Give a real smile to everyone ‎ you meet. You will experience how easy it is to get others to smile!‎ A.Thank everyone that supports you.‎ B.Write an encouraging note to others.‎ C.Helping others will be rewarded with more smiles.‎ D.It doesn’t have to take much time or money on your part.‎ E.You can be a great help by providing a meal that can be enjoyed.‎ F.Don’t wait to be asked to babysit when it is required.‎ G.You will get to know each other even better than you do right now.‎ 第三部分 英语知识应用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从41~60各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳答案,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ Face Adversity(逆境) with a Smile I told my friend Graham that I often cycle the two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. It’s okay, I guess. But blue would be perfect.‎ M: How much is it?‎ W: Oh, no. It’s $999. That’s really too expensive. We can’t afford it right now.‎ M: I know. Why don’t we wait till next month for their mid-year sale? It might be cheaper then.‎ W: Hey, that’s a good idea!‎ Text 8‎ W: Well, I certainly have enjoyed my stay in Edinburgh, Peter. Thanks for all your help. And thanks to Jean as well for showing me around.‎ M: Well, we both enjoyed it, too. How long will you stay in York before you go back?‎ W: Two days. Look, when are you going to be in London again? You must bring Jean with you and we can all get together again.‎ M: Yes, I’ll do that. That’s your train, isn’t it?‎ W: Yes, I’d better go. OK. Thanks again. Bye!‎ M: Bye, Sue. Don’t forget to give my regards to John.‎ W: I won’t. Bye!‎ Text 9‎ M: Mom, I’m a little worried about college. I just don’t know what to study. I don’t know what my major should be.‎ W: That can be a difficult decision, John.‎ M: How can I decide?‎ W: Well, I’d start with your interests. It will help you if you study something that you are interested in. What do you like to read and learn about or do?‎ M: I guess I like dancing and helping people. Those are my interests, I guess.‎ W: What do you mean by helping people?‎ M: If people have problems, I like to help solve them. Or if people are hurt, I like to try to do things that make them feel better.‎ W: It sounds like you might be interested in medicine, then.‎ M: Uh, I don’t know…‎ W: Another thing I think you should consider is the possible jobs you might get and how much money you want to make.‎ M: How do I figure that out?‎ W: You can research different jobs at the library, and there are reports and data on how well different jobs pay.‎ M: I want to have a well-paid job so that I can have the money to travel.‎ W: Well, there you go! Income is going to influence you most in your choice of major. There is one other thing you should consider, too. ‎ M: What’s that?‎ W: You know…scholarships, the money given to you for college. You might want to pick a major that will allow you to get a special scholarship. I know you’ll make the right decision.‎ M: Thanks, Mom.‎ Text 10‎ M: Welcome to London this December! There’s plenty going on this month. For example, on 1 December, London’s West End, the capital’s best shopping district, has its largest ever traffic-free day. More than a million visitors are expected to shop and enjoy various activities while Oxford Street and Regent Street are completely closed to cars and buses. Shoppers will be able to move around the streets, visiting our famous department stores, and having a bite at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree, a gift to London from Norway, will be lit at 6 p.m. on 6 December to the sounds of traditional Christmas songs. Then, every evening from 10 December until 23 December, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., people will sing Christmas songs in this beautiful setting. Lastly, ring in the New Year with the capital’s largest fireworks show. Although the fireworks will be set off at the British Airways London Eye, they can be enjoyed from across London and will also be broadcast on television at the same time. Then, just a few hours later, come out and see London’s colorful New Year’s Day parade, when marching performers from around the world pass through the capital’s streets. Enjoy your time in our city.‎
