We could say it is a case of mistaken identity. The word "Turkey" has meant "the land of the Turks" since ancient times. In the mid﹣1500s, the word "turkey" was first used to refer to the bird in the English language.‎ The misunderstanding over the word happened because of two similar﹣looking kinds of birds.‎ There is an African bird called the guinea fowl(珍珠鸡).It has dark feathers with white spots and a patch of brown on the back of its neck.Traders brought the guinea fowl to Europe through North Africa. This foreign bird came to Europe through Turkish lands. So, the English thought the bird as a "Turkish chicken".‎ When Europeans came to North America, they saw a bird that looked like the guinea fowl. This bird was native to the North American continent. But they thought that it ‎ was the guinea fowl, which,at that time, was called the "turkey cock",so they gave it the same name.‎ Hundreds of years later,we continue to call this North American bird ‘turkey",even though it has no connection at all with the country Turkey,or even with Europe.‎ But English is not the only language with interesting names for this North American bird.‎ The Turkish call turkey "hindi",the Turkish name for India. The reference(涉及)to India probably comes from the old wrong idea that the New World was in Eastern Asia.‎ ‎ The French call it "dinde",a name that also connects the bird to India."Dinde" means "from India" in the French language."Turkey" has similar names in several other languages.‎ 21. What can we know from paragraph 1? ‎ A.The word "turkey" appeared in modern times.‎ B.Turkey's English name is based on correct identity.‎ C.Americans like eating turkey in Thanksgiving holiday.‎ D.Both Turkey and turkey have similar meanings in English.‎ ‎22. Where did the guinea fowl come from? ‎ A. Europe. B. Africa. C. America. D. Asia.‎ ‎23. What does "it" in the last paragraph refer to? ‎ A.Eastern Asia. B.The French language. C.The New World. D.The bird turkey.‎ ‎24. What can be the best title for the text? ‎ A.How did Thanksgiving "turkey" get its name?‎ B.How did Americans spend their Thanksgiving holiday?‎ C.Why was the guinea fowl so popular with Americans?‎ D.Why was the guinea fowl different from American turkeys?‎ B A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin (顽童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.‎ Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you anything? Boy, I wish…” He hesitated (犹豫).‎ Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.‎ ‎“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again, “ Would you like to take a ride in my car?”‎ ‎“Oh yes, I’d love that.”‎ After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”‎ Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.‎ He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled (残疾) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.‎ ‎“There she is, Buddy Just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”‎ Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.‎ ‎25. From the story we can see the urchin ______. ‎ A. wanted Paul’s brother to give him a car ‎ B. wished to give his brother a car C. wished he could have a brother like Paul’s ‎ D. wished Paul could be a brother like that ‎26. The urchin asked Paul to stop his car in front of his house ______. ‎ A. to tell his brother about his wish B. to show he had a rich friend C. to let his brother ride in the car D. to show his neighbors the big car ‎27. We can infer from the story that ______.‎ A. Paul couldn’t understand the urchin B. the urchin had a deep love for his brother C. the urchin wished to have a rich brother D. the urchin’s wish came true in the end C ‎ The biggest challenge faced by travelers, especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.‎ The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quilted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.‎ Not surprisingly, the bag which was worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention--dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.‎ In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged (按摩揉洗)for a few minutes. After ‎ a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.‎ The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!‎ 28. What led Ash Newland to create the Scrunba Wash Pack?‎ A.His job requirements. B. His career as a lawyer.‎ C.His interest in invention. D. His personal experience. ‎ ‎29. Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?‎ A. Clothes couldn’t be washed well. ‎ B. The invention was not so convenient.‎ C. The bag was not beautiful and fashionable. ‎ D. The cost of the invention was very high.‎ ‎30. It can be inferred that the improved Scrubba Wash Pack ________.‎ A. turns to be not environmentally friendlier.‎ B. will replace the traditional washing machines.‎ C. will be widely used by more travelers in the future.‎ D. can encourage all people to travel a long distance.‎ 第一节 ‎(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ We achieve our goals one step at a time, doing a little each day. Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is. ‎ Stress is what you feel when you are worried about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, sad, scared, or afraid——all of which can give you a stomachache or a headache. ‎ However, there are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. ‎ Good stress might happen when you’re called to answer questions in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test. On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually make you sick.‎ The best way to fight the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep, Exercise, Leisure(休闲), and Food. If you get enough sleep and eat properly, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably feel less stressed.‎ ‎______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎2019-2020学年高一期中考英语答案 一、听力:共20小题,每题1. 5分,共30分 ‎1-5 CBBCA 6-10 BAACB 11-15 CABBC 16-20 ACACB 二、阅读理解:共10小题,每题2. 5分,共25分 ‎21-24 CBDA 25-27 BAB 28-30 DBC ‎ 三、七选五:共5小题,每题2分,共10分 ‎31-35 FBGDA 四、完形填空:共20小题,每题1. 5分,共30分 ‎36-40 ADCCA 41-45 ABACB 46-50 DDCBB 51-55 DCABD 五、语法填空:共10小题,每题1.5分,共15分 ‎56. before 57. smelly 58. on 59.It 60. dirt ‎ ‎61. ruins 62. injured 63. shocked 64. who 65. survivors ‎ 六、 写作(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节 应用文写作(满分15分)‎ Dear Tony,‎ You say you have some difficulties in adapting to the new study and life here.I know exactly how you feel.‎ You must be very anxious, but it's quite normal since this is your first time to study in a foreign country.Just relax.First, break big learning goals into small steps.
