My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she realized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed. "I'll be right back." she said. She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me. "Do you have money for me, son?" she said. "I'll need to be paid." I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed. By the time my mom returned, I was angry. "You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, and I had nothing to give her!" Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it. I've always admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector and in the middle of his talk, the light bulb (灯泡) on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new projector. "It's Okay." he announced. "There's nothing to worry about." We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the overhead projector. Who could even think of that? I often told my students, "When you go into the wilderness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you." And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared. 66. Why was the boy angry with his mother? A. His mother left him alone. B. He lost face in front of the cashier. C. His mother forgot to buy something. D. He had just quarreled with the cashier. 67. Why did Norman bring a spare bulb with him? A. He was always well-prepared. B. His presentation was about bulbs. C. He knew the classroom equipment was of poor quality. D. He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out. 68. What do the two stories tell us? A. Accidents happen almost every day. B. Money is the key that opens all doors. C. In fair weather, prepare for a rainy day. D. Chances favor those who are well-prepared. B Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you've completely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to remember the name of an old friend? For years we've accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of ageing as wrinkles and grey hair. But now a new book suggests that we've got it all wrong. According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age. In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s-much later than previously thought. Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age, we retain (保留) them, and even produce new ones well into middle age. For years it's been assumed that brain, much like the body, declines with age. But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests otherwise. This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, participants performed better on cognitive (认知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s. Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, verbal memory (how many words you can remember) and problem solving. Where they performed less well was number ability and perceptual speed—how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age. Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with ageing. A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we're younger we need to focus more on the negative aspects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we've learned our lessons and are sub-consciously aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy. 69. Barbara Strauch probably agrees that ________. A. people's brains work best between their 40s and 60s B. the young are better at handling important things C. ageing leads to the decline of the function of the brain D. wrinkles and grey hair are the only symbols of ageing 70. People are happier with age because ________. A. they know how to share feelings B. they learn to value the time left C. they cannot focus on negative aspects D. they do not realize the possible dangers 71. What is the main idea of the passage? A. People get more forgetful with age. B. People get wiser with age. C. People get happier with age. D. People get more self-aware with age. C As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease-especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier. The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely "not ill" and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body's special needs. Both types have simply been called "well." In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms "well" and "wellness" only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body's condition. Most importantly, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap may be "well," in this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. "Wellness" may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life. 72. Today medical care is placing more stress on _________. A. keeping people in a healthy physical condition B. monitoring patients' body functions C. removing people's bad living habits D. ensuring people's psychological well-being 73. According to the author, the true meaning of "wellness" is for people _________. A. to best satisfy their body's special needs B. to strive to maintain the best possible health C. to meet the strictest standards of bodily health D. to keep a proper balance between work and leisure 74. According to the author, which of the following groups of people would be considered healthy? A. People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures. B. People who are not presently experiencing any symptoms of disease. C. People who try to be as healthy as possible, regardless of their limitations. D. People who can recover from illness even without seeking medical care. D Text messaging is a surprisingly good way to receive candid responses to sensitive questions, according to a new study to be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. "The preliminary (初步的) results of our study suggest that people are more likely to disclose sensitive information via text messages than in voice interviews," says Fred Conrad, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research. "This is sort of surprising," says Conrad, "since many people thought that texting would decrease the likelihood of disclosing sensitive information because it creates a persistent, visual record of questions and answers that others might see on your phone and in the cloud." With text, the researchers also found that people were less likely to engage in "satisficing"-a survey industry term referring to the common practice of giving good enough, easy answers. "'We believe people give more precise answers via texting because there's just not the time pressure in a largely asynchronous (非同步的) mode like text that there is in phone interviews," says Conrad. "As a result, respondents are able to take longer to arrive at more accurate answers." Conrad conducted the study with Michael Schober, a professor of psychology at the New School for Social Research. "We're in the early stages of analyzing our findings," says Schober. "But so far it seems that texting may reduce some respondents' tendency to shade the truth or to present themselves in the best possible light in an interview, even when they know it's a human interviewer they are communicating with via text. What we cannot yet be sure of is who is most likely to be disclosive in text. Is it different for frequent texters, or generational, for example?" For the study, the researchers recruited approximately 600 iPhone-users through Google Ads, offering them iTunes Store rewards to participate in the study. Their goals were to see whether responses to the same questions differed depending on several variables: whether the questions were asked via text or voice, whether a human or a computer asked the questions, and whether the environment, including the presence of other people and the likelihood of multitasking, affected the answers. 75. The underlined word "candid" in Para. 1 probably means ________. A. straightforward B. appropriate C. ambiguous D. objective 76. Compared with phone interviews, texting has the strength that people could ________. A. present their best to the interviewers B. have more time to make a reply C. pay less for sending a message D. enjoy more freedom of speech 77. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Texting Downs Responses B. Texting Exposes Identity C. Texting Benefits Interviewees D. Texting Ups Truthfulness E In the face of the tensions and pressures we all face every single day, a sense of humor can be helpful. The ability to laugh is very important to our fullest development and to our "mental health". And if we can laugh at ourselves, we're even further along the road to self-fulfillment. Consider the following example. Gordon is hoping to become a professional singer. He has a good voice, and has performed in public many times. But he's very sensitive about his abilities. For instance, if his voice coach suggests he practice a particular song a few more times until he gets it right, Gordon falls apart, absolutely certain that the coach is implying that he isn't any good and he has no future in music. He mentioned his sensitivity in his paper for a psychology class. The psychology professor called him in, outwardly to talk about the paper, but hoping to give the boy a chance to open up about the problem. The teacher rarely told her students what they ought to do, but she felt Gordon should know that such extreme sensitivity would make it difficult for him in the entertainment field, where stage personnel, and fellow performers often are very hard on new talent. She asked Gordon if he felt he had made necessary preparations to follow through in such a competitive and difficult business. Gordon got angry with the teacher, pointing a brave finger at her, and told her she was "dead wrong" about him. Further, Gordon asked what she could possibly know about music and the pressures of the profession. The teacher stood up and turned Gordon around, right in the middle of a sentence, asking him to continue, but to watch himself in the mirror on the back of the office door as he talked. Gordon tried to go on, pointing and gesticulating, but suddenly he saw his expression in the mirror, then when he turned to face the psychologist, he noticed a smile beginning to form on the teacher's face. At the very top of his "outburst," Gordon burst out laughing. He stopped his aggressive talk and asked the teacher if he looked that ridiculous all the time. Seeing himself "objectively" made Gordon realize that how ridiculous it was to take himself so seriously. In our everyday life, the ability to catch ourselves being so serious, bearing all the burdens of the world, and trying to save the human race helps us relieve some built-up tension through laughter. Laughter is a necessary part of mental health. Laughter is one of the ways in which we relax and recreate the selfhood. The things we find in humor may vary, but the experiences of humor, pleasure, and enjoyment are extremely important and must be fostered. 78. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that Gordon _________. A. has broken up with his coach B. has failed to be a professional singer C. keeps practicing and hopes for the best D. feels very sensitive to other people's comments 79. Why did the psychologist talk with Gordon? A. To discuss his paper with him. B. To help him realize his problem. C. To point out his rude behaviors. D. To offer advice on reducing pressure. 80. How does the author support his ideas? A. By offering analyses. B. By providing research results. C. By giving an example. D. By stating an argument. 第二卷 (两部分,共35分) 第四部分:阅读信息还原(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Most drinks stating that they are fruit-flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission. "Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be non-existent," said Food Commission spokesperson Lan Tokelove. "Food production is highly competitive. 81 It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked." Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry-flavored products sold in stores. 82 Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar. 83 Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry-flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all. 84 Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, Food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the package with pictures of strawberries is misleading. 85 Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights." A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people. B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit. C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all. D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so. E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products. F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all. G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging. 第五部分:书面表达(共两节,满分25分) 第一节 选词填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 根据句意,选择适当的词并用其恰当的形式填空。每空只填一个词。 permission apply absent approval surround original equip predict tolerate oppose 86.
