Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can’t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.‎ ‎ Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.‎ ‎ Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, and then he operated on them. He made the monkeys’ blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood.‎ ‎ Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys’ brains. When the brain’‎ s temperature was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.‎ ‎ 16.What is the biggest difficulty in operating on the damaged brain?‎ ‎ A.The patients are often too nervous.‎ ‎ B.The time is too short for doctors.‎ ‎ C.the damage is extremely hard to fix ‎ D.the blood-cooling machine might break down ‎ 17.How was the brain operation made possible?‎ ‎ A.Mainly by lowering the brain’s temperature.‎ ‎ B.By trying the operation on monkeys first.‎ ‎ C.By having the blood go through a machine.‎ ‎ D.By taking the blood out of the brain.‎ ‎ 18.What is the right order of the steps in the operation?‎ ‎ a.send the cooled blood back to the brain. b.stop the blood to the brain.‎ ‎ c.have the blood cooled down. d.operate on the brain.‎ ‎ A.a, b, c, d B.c, b, d, a C.c, a, b, d D.b, c, d, a B ‎ London—A morning train rides away, across the channel. English kids discuss the Liverpool’s football team in a Paris pub. Some Parisians have started to travel to work in London.‎ ‎ In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two cities, London and Paris, in A Tale of Two Cities. These days, it might be A tale of One City.‎ ‎ As there are few jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs.‎ ‎ Paris, rich in beauty, is more stylish. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down. “For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,” said Trevor Wheeler, a financial expert. Chantal Jaouen, a professional ‎ designer, agrees. “I am French, but I’ll stay in London,” she said.‎ ‎ There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. “I think people laugh more in Paris,” she said.‎ ‎ “Both cities have changed beyond recognition,” said Larry Collins, an author and sometimes a Londoner. Like most people who know both cities well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. “I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better.”‎ ‎ But certainly not cheaper. Rents, for example, in some parts of London, can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris. Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.‎ ‎ Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don’t have to choose. “I love Paris, my little neighbourhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is too organized,” she said. “In London, you can be whoever you want. No one cares.”‎ ‎ 19.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?‎ ‎ A.London and Paris used to be separated.‎ ‎ B.Liverpool is a big city in France.‎ ‎ C.Paris and London are the two biggest cities in the world.‎ ‎ D.In the 19th century Dickens told his stories in the two cities.‎ ‎ 20.What conclusion can we draw about London and Paris according to this passage?‎ ‎ A.Parisians enjoy English food more than their own.‎ ‎ B.Londoners seldom travel to Paris on holidays.‎ ‎ C.Young people prefer to live in London.‎ ‎ D.Both cities have their advantages.‎ ‎ 21.What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 7 refer to?‎ ‎ A.parts B.rents C.lives D.people ‎ 22.What is meant in the last sentence?‎ ‎ A.People can do everything in London.‎ ‎ B.People will feel lonely in London.‎ ‎ C.People in London enjoy living in different ways.‎ ‎ D.People in London enjoy a lawless life.‎ C ‎ Interested in more about the Great Britain? Here is what one of its museums is doing. The Museum of London is starting to unearth what might turn out to be as many as 3,000 human skeletons(遗骸)under a train station in the United Kingdom’s capital. The bones were discovered when workers began building a new entrance to a train station in London, England.‎ ‎ As the first city burial ground in London, Bedlam was probably used between 1569 and 1738. Its name comes from the nearby Hospital of Saint Mary of Bethlehem, which people also called Bedlam. Often, the people buried in Bedlam could not afford to be buried anywhere else. The burial ground also served as an overflow cemetery(墓地). That means that if other cemeteries became full, a person would be buried in Bedlam instead. It is believed that there could be a total of 20,000 skeletons in the overall burial ground.‎ ‎ Experts think that studying the skeletons may help them learn about London’s past, including questions about Black Death, a deadly disease that had a terrible influence on much of the world. It started in the mid-1300s and swept through Asia, Africa, and Europe. Historians believe almost 50 million people died of the disease, including many of those buried at Bedlam. “Sixteen sixty-five saw the very last recorded period of the disease,” says Jay Carver, the leading expert on the project. Carver and his team believe the Bedlam bodies may explain why the outbreak suddenly stopped.‎ ‎ The dig site sits above an even older Roman road (between the 2nd and 3rd century A. D.) Archaeologists(考古学家)have already found a large number of objects from Roman times, including horseshoes and urns. Nick Elsden, the project manager for the site, says, “This is the UK’s largest archaeology project, in what is one of the oldest areas of the city, so we stand to learn a great deal.”‎ ‎ 23.Which of the following is true of the Black Death?‎ ‎ A.It killed almost 30 million people.‎ ‎ B.It continued for over 300 years.‎ ‎ C.It started in the 1300 in Bedlam.‎ ‎ D.It was only found in Europe.‎ ‎ 24.What can we learn about Bedlam from the text?‎ ‎ A.It used to be a train station.‎ ‎ B.It served as a cemetery for rich people.‎ ‎ C.It was once taken up by the Romans.‎ ‎ D.got its name thanks to Jay Carver.‎ ‎ 25.What was expressed in Nick Elsden’s words?‎ ‎ A.Excitement. B.Kindness. C.Praise. D.Tolerance.‎ ‎ 26.What would be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A.Archaeologists’ work. B.The Museum of London.‎ ‎ C.History of the Black Death. D.Skeleton secrets in London.‎ D ‎ Earlier this week, 23 robots from all over the world competed in Pomona, California, for a $ 2 million prize in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Teams have been working on these robots for three years—their challenge was to build a robot that can aid in disaster. The rules are simple—each robot has one hour to score eight points for various tasks, which include driving a car, opening a door.‎ ‎ Every team has people in a separate garage, sitting around big screens and controlling their own robots. Across the garage stands Carnegie Mellon’s bright red robot, CHIMP. “It has arms and hands but it’s different in the sense that it doesn’t walk to get around; it rolls around on these tracks,” says Tony Stentz, team leader of team Tartan Rescue. “CHIMP can go from upright to all—fours in just a few seconds. Weighing in at around 440 pounds, it seems certain to win in the competition,” he said.‎ ‎ During the early drive, CHIMP almost went into the road block. It was slow getting out of the car, but once it made it out, and opened the door, it dropped to the ground in the doorway. For all the other teams, a fall means that humans have to step in and get the robot back on its feet. But about five minutes later, CHIMP got back without any help.‎ ‎ The team didn’t get any points for that move, but recovering from a fall would come in pretty handy in a disaster area. And CHIMP still completes all the tasks in under an hour. “What a bang-up job!” Stentz said as he received handshakes and high-fives from the crowd.‎ ‎ Though CHIMP was clearly the winner on the first day of finals, it ran into lots of trouble on the second day and ended up coming in third place overall. Team KAIST, from South Korea, took the $2 million prize; Florida-based Team IHMC Robotics came in second and won $1 million. “After two days, hopefully we’re all a step closer to making humans safer after disaster,” added Tony Stenz.‎ ‎ 27.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?‎ ‎ A.The robots are worth $ 2 million in total.‎ ‎ B.The robots are required to complete several jobs.‎ ‎ C.The competitors are from 23 different countries.‎ ‎ D.The robots are able to think for themselves.‎ ‎ 28.What did CHIMP do during the competition?‎ ‎ A.Scored eight points. B.Beat Team KAIST.‎ ‎ C.Fell down suddenly. D.Kept moving on all fours.‎ ‎ 29.What does the underlined word “bang-up” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?‎ ‎ A.dangerous B.difficult C.temporary D.great ‎ 30.What is the purpose of the text?‎ ‎ A.To report a robotic competition. B.To discuss the future of robots.‎ ‎ C.To introduce a clever robot. D.To inspire children to make robots.‎ ‎ 第二节 ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ You wouldn’t want that job! But robots are doing such jobs right now and have been for the last 20 years. And they do the same job again and again without getting tired. 31 So in some ways robots make better factory workers than humans.‎ ‎ Thousands of robots are at work right now in factories all over the world. 32 Large robots lift heavy parts or weld cars together. Similar robots do delicate asks,‎ ‎ like putting candy into boxes.‎ ‎ In automobile factories, robots are replacing people in paint shop. Paint fumes can make people sick. 33 They can even paint in the dark to save electricity.‎ ‎ 34 Some robots work in offices, carrying and delivering mail. They look like carts with places for holding the mail. The robots are programmed to stop at pickup stations and travel through the office on a set path.‎ ‎ Robots can also explore the ocean. They search underwater for lost ships, search for oil and gas, mine the ocean floor, and help to do scientific research. 35 ‎ ‎ Robots, not astronauts, were the first explorers from Earth to go to the Moon. For now human beings cannot visit some planets of our solar system. But robots can.‎ ‎ In the future robots will be doing more and more of our difficult, dangerous and boring jobs and will leave humans more time to do interesting things.‎ ‎ A.Not all robots work in factories.‎ ‎ B.But robots don’t mind the fumes.‎ ‎ C.Some companies even produce smart robots.‎ ‎ D.People do get tired, make mistakes and get hurt.‎ ‎ E.There are good reasons for using robots rather than humans.‎ ‎ F.The size and shape of a working robot is determined by its job.‎ ‎ G.They can go into places that are too dangerous for human divers.‎ ‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 ‎ 第一节 完形填空 ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎ Jim had always been smart and creative.
