The measures was carried out by some governments, including nets and traditional drum lines , and provided beachgoers with a false sense of safety. The study found the effectiveness of nets was difficult to evaluate, while the significant damage they cause to other marine(海生的)wildlife was clear. Researchers desire for non-deadly shark control measures such as eco barriers, sonar(声呐)technology , and various shark-spotting techniques. Researchers said while the risk coming across a shark was rare, any shark-related deaths and injuries caught huge public and media attention. One of the arguments in support of using shark nets is that just one shark-related death has been reported in Queensland since the 1960s. Similarly, since the 1930s, NSW has had only one shark-related death. But there have been at least 13 people killed by sharks at beaches without nets in the NSW north coast over the past two years. The Human Society International head of campaigns, Nicola Beynon, said the government needed to move away from outdated methods. Deadly shark nets and drum lines are more than 50 years behind scientific and animal welfare standards for dealing with marine wildlife,” said Beynon. The NSW Greens’ marine spokesman, Justin Field, said, People are 100 times more likely to drown at the beach than to be killed by a shark in Australia. Therefore, millions of dollars going into the shark net program should be directed to observation towers for our lifeguards and improving the beach devices.” 58. Which of the following do researchers focus on? A. Beachgoers’safety. B. Friendly shark control ways. C. The shark-related death rate. D. Advanced shark-spotting techniques 59. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Shark-related deaths. B. Measures to protect sharks. C. Reasons of using shark nets. D. Dangers for beachgoers 60. What can be the best title for the next? A. Are shark nets necessary? B. A new study on sea animals C. Shark net programs D. Effective ways if avoiding sharks C Eat healthier. Exercise twice a week. Read more books. Lose weight. We make the same resolutions (决心) every year, but most of us fail, dying out after only a few days or, at best, weeks. Even the most successful among us crash and burn when it comes to personal change. President Barack Obama struggles to get out of his cigarette habit. Professionals who help people make changes in their lives suggest the change is decided not by one’s surroundings, but one’s mind. Beginning with small goals or steps usually leads to a better result later, they say. But they notice that the experience is different for everyone. “People are more likely to make positive changes in their lives not only when their friends do, but when their friends of friends do, and when their friends of friends of friends do,” said Nicholas Christakis, a professor of medical sociology at Harvard University. “People are better able to make changes in their lives –lose weight, quit smoking, become happy – when they do this with a large number of other people, and so taking advantage of your social network ties can contribute to your own efforts.” Johnny Augustin understands that well. His resolution for 2008 was to reduce 30 pounds from his 237-pound frame. But the change didn’t come easily. He said, “I’m a huge procrastinator, I kept putting it off until tomorrow. I didn’t get to do it until the summer.” However, Augustin got encouraged when he saw his older brother working out. Today, Augustin weighs 190 pounds. “Of course, change can happen only if people don’t set their expectations too high or try to deal with too many changes at once; one of the biggest mistakes we make is setting unrealistic goals,” said Dalia Llera, a psychologist at Lesley University. “You can’t accomplish in a few weeks what you haven’t accomplished in a few years,” said Llera. 61. From the first paragraph we can infer that________. A. change for a person is challenging B. famous people have great resolutions C. most people don’t want to change themselves D. personal change is beyond belief 62. It is known from Nicholas Christkis that________. A. people who have the same attitude often get together B. making a change is easier with support from a cheerful group of friends C. social networks have great effect on one’s change D. people’s feelings can contribute to their efforts 63. The word “procrastinator” in Paragraph 4 refers to those who ________. A. have great determination to make a change B. put off work especially because of laziness C. have habitual carelessness and laziness D. have no desire to do something great 64. According to the passage, Dalia Liera suggested that ________. A. people should understand their goals well B. people should try their best to change themselves C. people should have confidence and positive habits D. people should start with setting small goals to meet D The First Hello The man from the telephone department got off the bus, and made his way to the tea stall, wiping the sweat off his head, face, then slipping his handkerchief under his shirt to wipe his neck and back. It was a year ago that the phone line had been installed, six months later men from the public works department had come to put up the phone booth — a neat box-like structure, with a glass window, and wooden ledges, yellow in color. And days after that, a painter had taken an entire day to color in broad, black brushstrokes, the words: STD Booth, local and STD allowed. No one could tell that the last word had been misspelled. Besides, he had taken the entire day. After he had a cup of tea, he left, waving cheerfully. And now months later, someone else was here again. Everyone watched the man as he sat on the bench. No one said a word, and soon the sound of him slurping his tea filled the hot afternoon. A few leaves fell, heavy in the heat, and sometimes a car passed, on its way to the main city farther away. When the man had finished, he made to pay but the tea shop owner who sat behind his steaming kettle and the washed upturned cups, waved him away. “You are our guest here.” So the man took his handkerchief out again and wiped his face. They crowded around him as he shut himself up in the phone booth. When the children pressed their nose against the glass, he shooed them away, as he took out a shiny black instrument and placed it on the narrow shelf. A sigh of satisfaction passed through everyone that soon changed to an excited yell as they saw him dial a number, pressing a finger into the ringed dialer of the phone and letting it go all the way in a half-circle. A while later, they hear him say into the mouthpiece, “Hello.” “Hello,” the children around the booth took up the cry, the teashop owner broke into a smile and the men waiting for a bus smiled and said hello to each other. The sadhu(印度的僧人) who sat under the banyan tree nodded wisely. As the sound carried, more hellos were heard. The women winnowing grain giggled as they tried the word tentatively, the shepherds feeding their flocks called out to their sheep, laughing as they used the word. “It‘s a big occasion,” said the headman, in an awed(敬畏的)voice. “It is,” agreed those around him. The telephone man emerged and handed over a small chit of paper to the headman. “This is the telephone number”. The headman looked at it respectfully as if it were a mantra(符咒). The others around him read out the numbers slowly, digit-by-digit. The telephone man was now too tired to notice the cheering around him. He knew he had to wait long before the bus to take him back arrived. As he sipped his second cup of tea, he remembered something else. “Oh, you can’t start using the phone now. The minister will come next month and inaugurate(举行落成典礼) it.” No one said a word. No one was surprised. They had waited so long; a month more did not really matter. 65. In the story, fitting a working telephone booth __________. A. was a process that had already taken 12 months B. was in the charge of the headman. C. should have been finished more than a year ago D. was an artistic challenge for a local painter 66. A misspelled word on the booth __________. A. was a joke shared by the painter and the local people B. made the painter miss his tea break C. went unnoticed by the local people D. kept everyone occupied for an entire day 67. When the man from the telephone department arrived, __________. A. he learned about the village while having a nice drink B. there was a sudden rush of activity in the village C. he was greeted like a regular customer D. the hot afternoon was filled with quiet expectation 68. What can be inferred from the story? A. The man from the telephone department had a mentally demanding job. B. Only the minister had the authority to make the first call. C. It was a distant village free from modern technology. D. Few of the local children went to school for education. 69. The examples of the children, the teashop owner, the men waiting for the bus, the women and the shepherds are given to illustrate __________. A. the local people’s curiosity for the new thing B. the ignorance of the local people C. the local people’s enthusiasm for English learning D. the popularity of the man from the telephone department 70. What words can be used to best describe the local people? A. Innocent and cooperative. B. Hospitable(热情友好的)and respectful. C. Patient and competent. D. Independent and admirable Generally, laughter is related to a number of beneficial effects. Among humans, laughter is often expressed in babies as early as 4 months old. As the child grows older, the child begins to be joined in behaviors, which are intended to raise laughter in others. It’s believed that the purpose of this development process is to establish social relationships as well as gaining feedback(反馈) as to what types of behavior should be strengthened or discouraged. Aside from promoting social bonding, research has found that social laughing has also helped people physically. For example, it can reduce feelings of pain and have a relaxing effect and make the lung work better. Additionally, laughter has psychological benefits. It reduces stress, anxiety, tension, embarrassment, worry, frustration and anger. It’s good for individuals like nurses, firefighters and soldiers because their work requires them to deal with terrible events or injuries. Some people like professional comedians intentionally set themselves up to the target of laughter. Sometimes people laugh for the purpose of laughing at another or making another feel ashamed or stupid. In such instances, the laughter isn’t performed in “good fun”,but at the cost of an individual who will be hurt by it. In these instances, the “laugher’s” behavior is harmful. Some people are particularly sensitive and have a fear of being laughed at or made to appear silly. This fear has been identified as gelotophobia (恐笑症). For those who are highly gelotophobic, their concern about their performance in public may result in anxiety, avoidance of social situations and low self-respect. So how do you know whether laughter in a certain situation will produce a positive or negative result? One factor to keep in mind is to consider the feelings of the target of the laughter. But what about laughing in social situations where the target isn’t present or doesn’t mind? Even in such cases, laughing can sometimes have a negative result if you have no awareness how the others who are present will react. Overall, although laughter has a number of benefits, in some situations it can ''cut like a knife.'' Be careful! Laughter can be a double-edged sword Function of laughter ● Laughter can push people to build social relationship with others. ● Laughter can indicate one’s (71) ▲ towards different behaviors. In response to it, three provinces have banned schools from setting out parental homework. I think it’s unnecessary for parents to do so. Doing homework with kids brings bad results, as opposed to doing both parties favors. The more involved in kids’ homework parents are, the more dependent on them the kids are, which will affect their independent thinking. What’s worse, not only does it multiply the risk of homework-connected argument but also it puts heavy pressure on kids mentally. No memory is more painful than that of my primary school, when my mother accompanied me when I did my homework. I was overwhelmed by frustration and insecurity in that once my homework failed to live up to my parents’ expectations, what I faced was nothing but a scolding, which would cause a bitter argument. (Text 1) W: Why don’t you go to a dealer to check out the used cars? I thought there are more. W: On your right, you can see a statue of Paulo Pimentez. M: I’m sorry. Who’s he? W: He was a famous writer who lived and died in the city. M: I think I saw another statue of him in the park. It was beautiful! W: That wasn’t a statue of Paulo Pimentez you saw in the park. There are a lot of statues in the city. (Text 8) W: Can I help you? M: Yes, I bought the T-shirt in the sale here a couple of weeks ago. I think it was … W: I see, yes … M: And I’ve only worn it a few times, but when I looked at it yesterday I just thought, no, I don’t like it. I don’t think it suits me. The colour’s not really right for me. Do you know what I mean? W: Well … um, do you have any receipt, or proof of purchase? M: No, no, I didn’t keep the receipt, sorry. W: Well, we can’t normally exchange goods without proof of purchase, you see. M: Oh no. W: I can speak to the manager if you like, see what he says. M: Well yes, if you would … because I would like to change it. (Text 9) M: I’m broke again. Could you lend me some money? W: Broke again? Jeff, this is the third time you’ve asked me for help! M: I know, I’m sorry. But my old guitar broke, and I had to buy a new one. W: Look Jeff, if you want to play in a band, that’s OK with me, but you can’t keep asking me to pay for it! M: OK, OK, you’re right. But what do you think I ought to do? W: Well, I think you had better go on a budget. Make a list of all your income and all your expenses. Don’t spend more than you earn. M: But my expenses are always larger than my income. W: Then maybe you should work more hours at the computer store. M: I already work 15 hours a week! Maybe I should just drop out of school, work full-time, and play in the band in the evenings. W: Come on, Jeff, when I was your age … M: I know, I know. When you were my age you were already married and working and going to school … (Text 10) W: Thank you to all the competitors. I won’t say much because I know you’re all anxious to hear the results — it was a very difficult decision and I’ll start with the band which came in fourth. That’s Texas Team, who are the youngest group here today. Unfortunately, the violinist played so quietly that we couldn’t hear him. So bad luck to Texas Team. Third was Eastside. They are such good dancers they should enter for a dance competition. And with a bit more practice on the music they’ll do very well. In second place is Third Avenue. They did well, especially their young guitarist, but the singer looked so unhappy. We thought maybe he didn’t want to win! Never mind — you nearly won, so better luck next time. Congratulations to The Storm who are our winners today. The singer had such a great voice that we had to give them first place. Well done.查看更多
