While the other animals run in fear, the hummingbird flies above the fire time and again, leaving a few drops of water from its beak (鸟喙).‎ ‎ “Why do you bother?” the other animals shout at the hummingbird. “I’m doing the best that I can,” the hummingbird replies.‎ ‎ “It’s such a beautiful story,” Ms. Maathai says, thinking of the world’s environmental problems.‎ ‎“There’s always something we can do with our little beak like the little hummingbird.”‎ ‎ In 2004 Maathai was honored with a Nobel Peace Prize for her work founding the Green Belt Movement (GBM), which hires villagers, especially women, to improve the environment. Since then, she’s realized that people’s values (价值观) are what inspire them. If the values are good ones, good actions will follow.‎ ‎ “If you don’t have good values, you’ll develop vices (恶劣行径),” says ‎ Maathai. “And if we give in to the vice, we destroy ourselves. We destroy the environment.” That’s the message of her new book. ‎ ‎ In 1971, Maathai received a doctor’s degree from the University of Nairobi, the largest university in Kenya. She’s now back in her homeland beginning work on the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) at the University of Nairobi. “They want to call it after me,” she says.‎ ‎ WMI will pay more attention to “learning by doing” and use knowledge to deal with real problems. “What Africa needs is people who are willing to get their fingers dirty and work with the people,” says Maathai.‎ ‎ Planting trees is one way people connect with the natural world. She continues to inspire others. “There is no lasting peace until we have peace with the earth itself,” she says.‎ ‎35. Why does Wangari Maathai think highly of the hummingbird?‎ A. It can create water from its beak.‎ B. It helps the other animals run away.‎ C. It tries its best to put out the fire.‎ D. It finds out a way to save the forest.‎ ‎36. Those who work for GBM are mainly _____.‎ A. environmental experts B. women villagers ‎ C. people who have good values ‎ D. people who love birds ‎37. Which of the following is TRUE about Wangari Maathai?‎ A. She is from Japan.‎ B. She received a Nobel Prize.‎ C. She is a university teacher.‎ D. She has always raised the hummingbird.‎ ‎38. What would be the best title for the text?‎ A. Planting trees B. The hummingbird C. Wangari Maathai D. Good values C ‎ ‎ Scientists have come up with a new theory on why woolly mammoths (长毛象) became extinct 21,000 years ago. Up until now, people believed that mammoths, the 3-metre-high relatives of elephants, died out because they were hunted by humans. However, new research shows they ran out of grass, and that was caused by global warming 21,000 years ago.‎ ‎ Researchers from the UK’s Durham‎ ‎University suggest the hairy creatures starved to death because forests took over the grasslands they needed to survive. As the earth became warmer and wetter, forests spread and the mammoth had fewer areas to eat grass. “Mammoths had been common, and they wandered their way across many parts of Europe,” said lead researcher Professor Brian Huntley.‎ ‎ Some scientists have argued that it was the result of climate change while others say that it was driven by pressures of a growing human population, or even a huge disaster strike. According to Professor Brian Huntley, “The changing climate, through the effect it had on plants, was the key reason that caused the reduction in the population and final extinction of mammoths and many other large herbivores (食草动物),” he said. ‎ ‎ Professor Huntley said what happened to the mammoths in prehistory is a warning of what might happen in the future to today’s large herbivores. “This was a time of major environmental change and losses of habitat that may have led to the extinction of large animals that wandered many parts of the planet,” he said. Other creatures that also became extinct due to climate change were the cave lion, giant deer, woolly rhino and the cave bear. The research team believe today’s elephants and rhinoceroses could suffer a similar fate.‎ ‎39. According to Professor Brian Huntley, what’s the main reason why woolly mammoths died out?‎ A. Changing climate. ‎ B. Human hunting. ‎ C. Growing human population. ‎ D. A disaster strike.‎ ‎40. What can we infer from the text?‎ A. Global warming made the grasslands become fewer and fewer.‎ B. Woolly mammoths once lived in many parts of our planet in groups.‎ C. Cave lions, woolly rhinos and the cave bear are in danger of extinction. ‎ D. Herbivores can easily become extinct because they are particular about habitats.‎ ‎41. The author wants to tell us that _____.‎ A. woolly mammoths died out 21,000 years ago B. today’s large animals are in danger of extinction C. woolly mammoths died out because of decreasing grasslands D. scientists have different opinions about mammoths’ extinction D ‎ ‎ Parents who feel disappointed at their teenagers’ failure to pay attention in class, and inability to sit quietly long enough to finish homework or plan ahead, should take solace. Their children are not being lazy or careless, according to new research.‎ ‎ The research has found that teenagers’ brains continue developing far longer into adulthood than we used to think. Teens may look like young adults but their brain structure is similar to that of much younger children.‎ ‎ “It is not always easy for teens to pay attention in class without letting their minds wander, or to ignore distractions from their younger brothers or sisters when trying to solve a maths problem,” said Dr Iroise Dumontheil. “But it’s not the fault of teenagers that they can’t pay attention and are easily distracted. It’s to do with the structure of their brains. Teens simply can’t think as well as an adult.”‎ ‎ The research showed that the brain of a teenager works less effectively than that of an adult. “We knew that the front of the brain of teens functioned in a chaotic (混乱的) way but we didn’t realize it continued until the late 20s or early 30s,” said Dr Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, who led the research. ‎ ‎ Chaotic thought patterns are a result of teenagers’ brains containing too much ‎ grey matter — the cell bodies and connections which carry messages within the brain. As we age, the amount of grey matter in our brain reduces.‎ ‎ “What our research has shown is that there is simply too much going on in the brains of teens,” said Blakemore. “The result is that their brain energy and resources are wasted and their decision-making process is badly influenced. Adults, on the other hand, have less grey matter. This means that the brain works far more effectively.”‎ ‎42. The underlined word “solace” in Paragraph 1 may mean _____.‎ A. notice B. medicine C. comfort D. action ‎43. When making decisions, _____.‎ A. teens’ brains continue to do much needless work B. the grey matter in young children’s front brain becomes active C. people are not likely to be distracted until their late 30s D. adults are more independent than teens ‎ ‎44. What is the effect of having too much grey matter?‎ A. It makes us always feel disappointed.‎ B. It makes us more intelligent.‎ C. It had a bad effect on the growth of teens.‎ D. It had a bad effect on decision-making.‎ ‎45. What’s the text mainly about?‎ A. Teens have different brains from those of children.‎ B. Adults work more effectively than teens.‎ C. Grey matter makes teens unable to pay attention.‎ D. Brain energy is wasted in the brain’s activity.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Great communicators ‎ It is well known that certain species of birds, such as the parrot and the dove,‎ ‎ are great communicators.‎ ‎ 46 Unlike the dove, which communicates mostly with other doves, the parrot communicates not only with other parrots but also with human beings. It is perhaps less commonly known that, in the animal world, there are other species which are just as good at communication as the parrot or the dove. ‎ ‎ 47 But whale music is too low for the human ear to hear. The blue whale is the greatest of the whale singers, but unfortunately, these amazing animals are still being hunted, so one day their singing may stop forever.‎ ‎ Unlike the blue whale, the African elephant is no longer in danger of extinction, as conservation (保护) projects have been very successful. 48 The noise that elephants make when they are talking to one another sounds just like stomach rumbles (持续而低沉的声音), but in fact, it comes from the elephants’ throats and not from their stomachs. ‎ ‎ 49 Some of them cannot be heard by the human ear; but others can, and some of these can be so loud that they sound just like thunder. Each rumble carries specific information. Besides, scientists have also discovered females are more talkative than males. 50 ‎ A. Whales sing to one another.‎ B. What do you think elephants and whales might have in common?‎ C. So far, scientists have identified thirty different kinds of rumble.‎ D. Of the thirty known rumbles, females make six times as many as males!‎ E. Like the blue whale, however, the African elephant loves to communicate.‎ F. When the dove is in love, for example, it sings or coos constantly to its partner.‎ G. Even the blue whale is often heard singing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.‎ 第四部分:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30 分)‎ ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎ Yesterday I was returning from Boston by train and my wife was planning to leave work to pick me up from the station. 51 I told her not to bother on the phone; I would come by 52 .
