They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists. Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15-or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case?‎ Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature. Classic novels typically come with 15-or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover, be absorbed in, and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently, we mustn’t read classic alone, without experts guiding our experiences.‎ However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we’re not alone in our pains and joys. By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding (有充分理由的) , more comforting, ‎ than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings(追求), and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may, for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in.‎ While we’re letting go of things, lets’ stop worrying about understanding everything. We can’t. It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and languages.‎ 21. Most museum goers ________.‎ A. enjoy reading notice boards. B. understand the artworks well.‎ ‎ C. share common interest in artworks. D. lack professional art knowledge.‎ 22. What can the spoilers in Para.2 possibly be?‎ A. plots given away in advance. B. readers’ expectations.‎ ‎ C. guiding experts. D. plots given away in advance.‎ 23. What message is mainly conveyed in the passage? A. We should find more fun from classics.‎ B. Experts need to give readers better guidance.‎ C. Reading classics is a personal exploration.‎ D. Classic literature only benefits a few readers.‎ B Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull. E-books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares, but many publishers are too cautious about piracy( 盗版 ) and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries.‎ Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers(电子阅读器) are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money. If these people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient. Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. The files disappear from the device when they are due.‎ E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible(不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licenses. Most libraries use a ‎ company called OverDrive, which secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format(格式). Yet publishers and libraries are worried by OverDrive’s global market dominance(主导), as the company can control fees and conditions. Publishers were annoyed when OverDrive cooperated with Amazon, the world’s biggest online bookseller, last year. Owners of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader who want to borrow e-books from libraries are now redirected to Amazon’s website, where they must use their Amazon account to secure a loan.‎ According to Pew, an opinion researcher, library users are a perfect market for Amazon. Late last year Amazon introduced its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, which lets its best customers borrow free one of thousands of popular books each month.‎ Library supporters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers, and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new work. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey, which found that more than half of Americans with library cards say they prefer to buy their e-books.‎ So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance. Random House raised its licensing prices earlier this year, and Harper Collins limits libraries to lending its titles 26 times.‎ ‎24. It can be inferred from paragraph 1 that ______.‎ A. Libraries and publishers face the same problem of e-books’ privacy.‎ B. Most publishers hesitate to cooperate with libraries.‎ C. Libraries are eager to keep strong relationship with publishers.‎ D. Several big publishers have sold e-books to libraries.‎ ‎25. Why are publishers worried that people will switch to electronic borrowing? A. Book sales may drop sharply because of convenient electronic borrowing.‎ B. There are lots of different and incompatible e-book formats available.‎ C. There is no time limit for the book files downloaded on the device.‎ D. E-books must be checked out and returned to libraries regularly.‎ ‎26. We can learn from the passage that ________.‎ A. Amazon is adopting measures to win more customers.‎ B. OverDrive distributes e-books and audio files to publishers.‎ C. over half of Americans are borrowing e-books from libraries.‎ D. e-books can be lent at libraries as many as you like.‎ ‎27. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. The Hopeful Future of Publishing Business.‎ B. The Dull Relationship between Libraries and Publishers.‎ C. The Uncertain Economics of Lending E-books.‎ D. The Close Cooperation between OverDrive and Amazon.‎ C Daily physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, many architects and designers are working to create buildings that encourage people to make exercise a part of their ordinary routine. The movement to promote healthy activity through architecture is called active design. It began in 1998 as part of a university public health program, and it has since gained popularity in cities around the world. Active design uses a number of techniques to encourage the occupants(居住者) of a building to be more active.‎ One of the most important strategies of active design is inspiring people to make walking part of their routine. A particularly successful tool for promoting walking is the skip-stop elevator. These elevators stop only on every second or third floor, leaving riders to take the stairs in order to reach their destination. Another strategy of active design is to make stairs more pleasant and inviting. Instead of creating dark stairwells that are located in isolated parts of buildings, active design uses well-lit and centrally placed stairs to encourage more foot traffic. Skip-stop elevators and appealing stair design are both effective tools of active design because they offer incentive and opportunity for exercise. In fact, researchers studying a building that employs both skip-stop elevators and more attractive stair design said that 70 percent of building occupants reported using the stairs every day.‎ Active design encourages physical activity using not only the interior(内部的) features of a building, but the relationship between a building and its surroundings as well. A building that employs active design may integrate outdoor space in order to make the environment more engaging and promote physical activity. Some elements that architects use to incorporate the exterior with the interior are glass walls, interior gardens or park spaces, and courtyards with open ceilings, all of which de-emphasize the boundaries between inside and outside. These elements make the building more physically and mentally invigorating(精力充沛的). Similarly, by increasing the number of entrances and exits to a building, architects can help keep a building’s users interested in their surroundings by providing a variety of routes for them to use. If people continue to be stimulated by new sights or experiences, they are less likely to choose the quickest and easiest path to their destination and may instead choose a more physically challenging route.‎ ‎28. What does the underlined word “incentive” in paragraph 2 mean?‎ ‎ A. requirement. B. technique. C. encouragement. D. assistance.‎ ‎29. Why does the author discuss dark stairwells in paragraph 2?‎ A. To show the differences between elevator and stairwell design.‎ B. To describe one advantage of using skip-stop elevators in buildings.‎ C. To argue that skip-stop elevators may lead to design failures.‎ D. To make a point about why people don’t use the stairs often.‎ ‎30. Which of the following is NOT a way that architects weaken the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces?‎ A. Creating spaces with open ceilings.‎ B. Building gardens inside the building.‎ C. Creating more routes for entering and exiting.‎ D. Using see-through materials.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有 两项为多余选项。‎ Identical(完全相同的) twins are born when an egg divides into two, resulting in the birth of two children with identical genes. 31 Some believe, however, that there is also a close connection between twins in the way they think, not just in the way they look. Twins finish each other’s sentences, and share the same tastes in clothes or music. Some have argued that identical twins have mysterious, even psychic, powers.‎ Although many identical twins claim to know what the other is thinking, there is no evidence to suggest that this is because of special powers. 32 Most of us have met up with a brother or sister, or close friend, and immediately asked, “What’s wrong?” because we have unconsciously recognized, in their facial expression, that they are upset in some way. Signs we would miss in a stranger’s behavior are instantly obvious in the way those close to us act. It is hardly surprising that twins notice the way their brother or sister’s facial expressions or body language gives away how they feel. Indeed, the closeness of their bond is likely to improve this ability over the years.‎ The media is full of stories in which a twin senses her brother or sister to be in trouble. 33 Damien Croft developed a bad headache one evening and, concerned, felt the need to phone his brother to check if everything was OK. When there was no reply, he drove to his brother’s home, only to find him unconscious, having had an epileptic fit (癫痫症) and fallen from a ladder while decorating. On the face of it, his sixth sense had saved the day. 34 Damien knew his brother was decorating, and knew that he was prone to epileptic fits. Subconsciously concerned, he had just imagined the worst-case situation. 35 . A. We all know such twins are often very similar in appearance.‎ B. The fact that something awful had happened was only a coincidence.‎ B. In contrast, there are many other stories which can be more easily explained.‎ C. In truth, of course, the events might also be explained in more ordinary terms.‎ D. Recent studies show the reasons of all those cases of mysterious happenings between identical twins.‎ E. In a recent, widely-reported case, for example, a young man survived a horrific fall thanks to a feeling his twin is supposed to have had.‎ F. A more believable explanation is that, like any pair of people who have grown up together, they are just good at understanding the thought processes behind what their twin does.‎ 第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空 白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ A product successful at home does not always guarantee that it will do well abroad. More than one company has failed to consider that, 36 the price is reasonable, local consumers will often only be 37 a product if it is adapted to fit their local 38 .‎ It is clearly necessary to take account of local 39 . Something that tastes good in one part of the world does not taste so good in others. A large number of 40 food companies have discovered how important it is to 41 their products to suit local markets. The US soup producers Campbell, 42 , found that their tomato soup was 43 too sweet for Europe and Japan. 44 , European food manufacturers have had 45 selling their soups in the US, where consumers felt that they were too salty.‎ ‎49‎ ‎50‎ ‎5‎ ‎2‎ ‎5‎ ‎3‎ ‎5‎ ‎4‎ International fast food restaurant chains were some of the first companies to realize the 46 of changing their products in order to 47 local consumers. A hamburger chain sells shrimp cake sandwiches in its Japanese restaurants. Another 48 squid in Japan and chorizo in Mexico. In the UK, Kentucky Fried Chicken sells thick British-style “chips” instead of fries. While McDonald’sa generally standardized menu worldwide, this is adapted for its foreign. For example, it has sold 51 in Germany but wine in France, and has added mutton pies to its Australian .‎ Businesses hoping to sell their products can learn an important lesson from these companies: it is essential to the market to discover local tastes and preferences, as this is the only way to be sure a product will be as 55 and successful in new markets as it has been at home.‎ ‎36. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.‎ My uncle, one of the powerful persons in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.‎ I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.‎ The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.‎ I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing ‎/ 11‎ atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.‎ Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, which looked like a big wooden box without fence, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side. ‎ Paragraph 1: Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus onto the ground._________‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces._________________________________________‎ 答案 ‎1-5 CBCAA 6-10 CBCBC 11-15 ABBCA 16-20 CAABB ‎21-23 DAC 24-27 BAAC 28-30 CDC 31-35 AGFDB ‎36-40 CDAAB 41-45 CABCA 46-50 BADCD 51-55 ACBAB ‎56 amazing; 57 before; 58 to talk; 59 an; 60 where; ‎ ‎61 are decorated; 62 performance; 63 used; 64 ranks; 65 totally Dear Adler,‎ ‎ I’m writing to convey my sincere gratitude to you for your warm welcome and hospitable reception during my stay in your house.‎ First of all, your warmth has made my brief stay pleasant and memorable, and I’m missing your delicious dinner which you cooked specially for me. What’s more, the beauty of American campus and variety of school activities have deeply impressed and appealed to me. Here is a Chinese knot for you, a symbol of reunion, friendliness, peace and love in China. With this gift, I wish you good health, greater happiness and prosperity. ‎ Finally I'd like to invite you to visit China sometime in the near future. ‎ Look forward to your reply. ‎ ‎ Yours, sincerely ‎ Li Hua Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus onto the ground. He hit the road face down and rolled over. He lay motionless in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind the bus stopped. In fact, I felt the same urge to keep going, but the urge to stop and help was stronger. Knowing that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined the body. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted his unconscious body into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family was contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted. ‎ The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands to her face and started weeping. “Son, you are an angel!’ she repeated. What a feeling this was, to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of exhilaration, the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes helping an accident victim had done for me. We spend a lot of our time wondering what path to take in our lives. This experience taught me that at times, these decisions are made for you – and that whatever happens is always for the best.‎
