All these words, you can see, have the same “port”, which comes from the Latin word, meaning “to carry” or “to move from one place to another”. And according to the bit at the beginning, which we call the prefix, the meaning changes. “Import” means “to carry in” or “to bring into a country”; “export”, “ex” means “out of”, so this word means “to carry out of the country”; “re” means “back”, so the “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”; “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another”. Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix, thus meaning a person who completes the verb. So, supporter means somebody who supports. A reporter is somebody who reports. Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports, and so on. 21. By adding a prefix or a suffix to a root, we can get a word which has _______. A. the meaning of a Latin word B. a different meaning C. the meaning of “in” or “out of” D. a lot of meanings 22. We can get a noun _______. A. just by adding “er” to verbs B. by changing a prefix C. only by adding “er” to a root D. by adding a suffix to a verb 23. According to the passage, if we talk about a man of “refinement”, you may guess that he must be _______. A. a man having good manners and education B. a person who should be educated C. somebody having bad manners D. a person punished by somebody else B Girls can easily get sad. If your friend is feeling blue and calls you, what will you do? Here are some tips on how you can make her smile again. Listen to her. When people feel sad, they often have the feeling of needing to be heard. So, listen carefully to what she is saying and do nothing else. Your friend will surely thank you for being the shoulder she can cry on. Once you are done with listening, you can offer some advice or remain silent and let her feel everything and let it all out by crying. As a friend, you might think you should give her some advice. But if you have no idea about what to say, just remain silent and be there for her. In order to be able to help your friend in need, don’t be sad for yourself. How can you help your friend when you are also feeling down? A hug can make a difference in the word. It makes you feel warm and special. A hug makes you feel safe. So give your friend a hug when she needs it the most. Spend more time with your friend who wants to be happy. Do things together like washing dishes, cleaning, or going out for fun. The more time you spend together, the stronger your friendship will become. Sometimes, it is much better that you avoid a crying friend in your life. But by doing so, you are also keeping your friend at a distance and will make her wonder if you are her true friend. If you are there when she needs you, your friendship will be much stronger. 24. According to Paragraph 2, when a female friend is sad, what should we do? A. We should ask her why she feels sad. B. We should say something nice to her. C. We should spend time listening to her. D. We should give her some good advice. 25. We can learn from the passage that______. A. Hugging a sad friend can make you feel warm and special. B. Your sad friend may feel much better if you also sad. C. It’s not a good idea to be silent facing a sad friend. D. Giving a hug to a sad friend is very helpful. 26. In paragraph 6, the writer mainly suggests that we_____. A. spend more time with your friend. B. help our friends with their housework C. spend time with our friends everyday D. ask our friends to take part in activities C Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world – Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey-rats will soon be man’s new best friends. What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives:the rat. How does it work? First the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When rat’s brain activity jumps the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person. Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York says “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity! The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history people will be happy to see a rat in a building. 27. In the world earthquake capitals rats will become man’s best friends because _______. A. they can fully take the place of man’s rescue jobs to save more people B. they can find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings C. they can serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings D. they can get into small spaces that the dogs may fail to get into 28. The underlined word “signal” in the third paragraph has the closest meaning to the one in sentence _______. A. At an agreed signal they left the room B. The policeman raised his hand to signal the driver to stop. C. He seemed to signal important changes in U.S. government policy. D. A signal failure resulted in the car accident. 29. Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that _______. A. they are more fantastic than other animals B. they are less expensive to train than dogs C. they don’t need electricity D. they are small and can get into small places 30. After reading the passage we can know _______. A. rats have already taken the place of dogs in searching for people B. the “rat project” has already been completed C. people are very happy to see a rat in a building D. people now still use dogs and robots in performing rescues 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。 Fearing a long, family car ride?
