My wife and I talked up the place and invited her over to try some of our tofu. Debra tried it, nodded and went out.‎ After a few minutes, she and her mother both walked back in. We were having the rest of our meal at that time, so we told her what we had ordered. Debra then asked the waitress to just repeat our order for them. Next, Debra said,“And we want to pay for their meal”, pointing to my wife and me. We tried to say no, but Debra wouldn't listen.‎ That was not the end of it. Hugs were in order. Debra came over to our table and my wife got up to hug her. Debra hugged my wife and put $100 into her hand. My wife firmly said NO, but Debra insisted. Freeloaders, they just sit around while their hardworking colleagues get things done. But might freeloaders actually be necessary for society to function efficiently? The answer could be yes — at least when it comes to fire ants and their efforts to dig nests underground.‎ Fire ants are highly social organisms. So, Goldman and his colleagues wanted to know how individual ants knew what to do without a central leader issuing orders. To find out, Goldman's team labeled individual fire ants with paint and then watched - 18 -‎ ‎ them dig their tunnels — only wide enough for two workers. It turned out that just 30 percent of the ants did 70 percent of the labor,“I was surprised that we ended up with so few workers actually doing the work at any one time.”‎ A quarter of the ants never even entered the tunnel. Others went inside, but left without digging out a single grain of dirt. These behaviors ensured the tunnels did not getclogged with insect traffic, which would make the construction process stop.‎ And when the scientists removed the five hardestworking ants from the tunnel, others immediately jumped in to compensate (补偿) — with no reduction in the group's productivity. It seems that it doesn't matter which ants are working or freeloading at a given time, as long as there is some division of labor to keep the tunnels flowing smoothly. The findings are in the journal Science.‎ The study could provide suggestions for the robotics. Imagine groups of robots sent to search for survivors from the ruins, or nanobots (微型机器人) coursing through our bodies to diagnose illness and deliver targeted medical treatment. Such robots will need to avoid getting jammed up in tight spaces. It might be necessary to program them so some just sit back and watch their colleagues work.‎ ‎8.How do fire ants get the work done when digging tunnels?‎ A.They all work under the order of their leaders.‎ B.Only the strong ants do the majority of the work.‎ C.They all cooperate together and spare no effort to do the work.‎ D.Some work efficiently while others just sit around and do nothing.‎ ‎9.What does the underlined word “clogged” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A.Covered. B.Crowded.‎ C.Destroyed. D.Spotted.‎ ‎10.When the hardestworking ants were taken away by the scientists, ________.‎ A.the rest of them didn't know what to do B.the leaders had to do the work by themselves C.other ants took their place and continued to do the work D.other ants were in panic and escaped from the tunnel immediately ‎11.According to the passage, the research findings can be applied to ________.‎ A.robot technology ‎ B.social communication - 18 -‎ C.underground construction ‎ D.scientific observations D ‎[2020·重庆第一次调研]A shirt, tie and blazer may not be my favorite, but if I were given the choice, I wouldn't throw away the idea of school uniform. Wearing a uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student.‎ My school is one of many that seem to be shifting to a more formal uniform — this September I will be wearing a shirt and blazer instead of my old jumper and polo shirt. A number of students have complained about the change, but some people believe that a school uniform can improve learning by reducing distraction, sharpening focus on schoolwork and making the classroom a more serious environment, allowing students to perform better academically. Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important. There is no competition about being dressed in the latest trend, which would put a great deal of financial pressure on students and parents. Potential bullies have one less target for their insults; it's hard to make fun of what someone is wearing when you're dressed exactly the same.‎ In America, where a majority of schools do not have a uniform, roughly 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. This might not be directly linked to what they're wearing, but having a uniform can be a safety net for many students who might otherwise suffer from bullying. A uniform gives the impression that rules are strict, perhaps helping maintain a sense of order at school.‎ My uniform might not be what I would wear in my own time, but it gives me a sense of belonging, takes away the pressure of what to wear and stops the bullies. School uniform isn't fashionable, but that's exactly why I think it should be here to stay.‎ ‎12.Why does the writer mention American children without uniforms in the passage?‎ A.To show pity for American kids.‎ B.To raise the government's attention.‎ C.To prove the benefits of school uniform.‎ D.To inform readers of American kids' uniforms.‎ ‎13.What is the writer's attitude towards school uniforms?‎ - 18 -‎ A.Disapproving. B.Confused.‎ C.Suspicious. D.Favorable. ‎ ‎14.Which is the advantage of wearing school uniforms for school kids?‎ A.It sharpens concentration on outdoor tasks.‎ B.It removes the teachers' financial pressure.‎ C.It satisfies students' dressing tastes and favorites.‎ D.It helps students maintain a sense of order at school.‎ ‎15.What is the best title for the passage?‎ A.My Cool School Uniform B.The Point of School Uniform C.The Idea of Dressing Properly D.The Way of Guarding Kids' Safety ‎ ‎[2019·成都第二次诊断]Twentyfive years of experience in the field have convinced me that many people who consider themselves to be highly intelligent are not necessarily good thinkers. __1__ There are many aspects of this trap but I shall mention just two.‎ A highly intelligent person can take a view on a subject and then use his or her intelligence to defend that view. __2__ When a person has a better defence of the view, he or she is less likely to seek out alternatives or listen to anyone else. __3__ As a result, many highly intelligent minds are trapped in poor ideas because they can defend them so well.‎ A second aspect of the intelligence trap is that a person, who has grown up with the notion that he or she is more intelligent than those around, wants to get the most satisfaction from that intelligence. __4__ Such a strategy gives you an immediate result and also establishes your superiority. Being constructive is much less rewarding. It may take years to show that a new idea works. __5__ So it is obvious that being critical and destructive is a much more appealing use of intelligence. This is made even worse by the absurd Western notion that critical thinking is enough.‎ A.They get caught in the intelligence trap.‎ B.But why are intelligent people not good thinkers?‎ C.Intelligent people always enjoy arguing with others.‎ - 18 -‎ D.You also have to depend on the listener liking your idea.‎ E.A person with higher intelligence always defends one's view better.‎ F.The quickest and most reliable way is to prove someone else wrong.‎ G.If you know that you are right, why should you do either of those things?‎ - 18 -‎ ‎课时练(二) 语言知识运用·组块专练——练准度 ‎(限时:30分钟)‎ 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎[2019·新疆第二次适应性测试]What I have learned with my three teens is this: when they are testing me and pushing the limits in a way that feels more aggressive than normal teenage behavior, this is when they need some extra love and __1__.‎ When our kids are young and aren't able to __2__ how they are feeling, they typically behave in a way that makes it obvious that they are sad, __3__, or not feeling like themselves. We tried to say no, but Debra wouldn't listen”和第三段中的“Debra hugged my wife... but Debra insisted”可知,Debra坚持要为作者夫妇买单。 根据第三段中的“With tears in the eyes, the workers were blown away... between four strangers”信息可知,餐厅的服务员看到这一幕,他们眼睛都湿润了,说明他们很感动。 根据第一段第一、二句“Fire ants tunnels got dug efficiently by only a small percentage of the group doing most of the work. Freeloaders, they just sit around while their hardworking colleagues get things done”可知,火蚁的大部分建巢工作都是由一小部分蚁群来完成的,但挖掘效率却很高;其他的火蚁却什么都不做,故D项正确。 根据第三段第二句“Others went inside, but left without digging out a single grain of dirt”可知,其他蚂蚁进去了,但没有挖出一粒泥土就离开了;结合该段第三句中的“which would make the construction process stop”可知,这样的举动可能会使工作停止;据此可推知,该处表示这些行为能确保洞穴不发生交通堵塞,故画线词意为“堵塞”,故B项正确。 根据第四段第一句“And when the scientists removed the five hardestworking ants from the tunnel, others immediately jumped in to compensate (补偿) — with no reduction in the group's productivity”可知,当科学家们把五只工作最勤奋的蚂蚁移开时,其他蚂蚁就会立刻来补偿,组织的生产力没有减少,故C项正确。 根据尾段的内容尤其是第一句“The study could provide suggestions for the robotics”可知,这一研究成果可以应用于机器人技术,故A项正确。 根据尾段中的“it gives me a sense of belonging, takes away the pressure of what to wear and stops the bullies.
