It's really important that I don't want to be looking at just another apartment block. In front of a park would be perfect but a top floor apartment would do fine. Then I would like it to be near a transport system because I don't have a car and use public transportation all the time.I'm single and have no kids so schools are not important. And there is just one other thing—I do a lot of work on the Internet and so I would need a broadband Internet connection.Do you think you have anything that matches my requirements? A If you need to spend time on the road, it's important to find ways to keep safe on your feet. Don't suppose it's your right of way. Yes, you might be crossing at the right place, at the right time, within the crosswalk area, but you are still exposed to danger. It could be a distracted driver, or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules, so you could still get hurt. You can be in the right legally, but that won't be much help when you're in the hospital. Follow pedestrian signals. Just as drivers aren't supposed to speed up to beat a light when crossing through an intersection, pedestrians need to take the same care when obeying their own signals. If the hand is flashing and the countdown is into single digits(数字), stay where you are. Trying to outrun the flashing hand is unsafe, especially as cars try to clear the intersection before the light turns red. Give drivers enough time to stop when crossing. Don't suppose that drivers will jam on their brakes when you hit the crosswalk signals. Some provinces, such as Alberta, issue(发出) a ticket if you don't give drivers enough time to brake. Cross quickly. Once you've followed all of the other rules, and it is safe to cross the street, don't then just wander along in front of six lanes(车道) of traffic. There's no need to run or jog, but respect the drivers who respect you enough to stop for you. 21. Who is the text intended for? A.Drivers. B.Cyclists. C.Police. D.Pedestrians. 22.What does the underlined word “distracted” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Considerate. B.Strange. C.Kindhearted. D.Absentminded. 根据画线词后的…or a cyclist with a loose sense of traffic rules… 20 23. In what case would pedestrians in Alberta be fined? A.Racing against time with drivers. B.Following crosswalk signals. C.Crossing the crosswalk area. D.Walking outside six lanes. B Would you want a doctor who got high marks in medical school just for trying really, really hard? Apparently many college students would have no problem with that. They believe students are owed a good grade simply because they put a lot of effort into a class. Or at least that is what they told researchers last year at the University of California, Irvine. The researchers asked over 800 college students if they agreed or disagreed with some statements. For example:“If I have completed most of the reading for a class, I deserve a B in that course.” And:“A professor should not be annoyed with me if I receive an important call during class.” Just 16% thought it was OK to take that phone call. But 66% agreed that a professor should consider effort and not just the quality of a student's work when deciding grades. And 40% thought they should get a B, the second highest mark, just because they did most of the reading for class. The findings appeared in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence. The students were eighteen to twentyfive years old. Some experts are not surprised that students often see no difference between effort and results. Social critics(评论家) like to say that in children's activities these days, everyone gets an award just for trying, so no one will feel rejected. Yet competition to get into the best colleges is fiercer than ever. Students may worry that low grades will keep them out of graduate school or a good job. And there may be another explanation: pressure from parents to get a good return on the family's investment. These days, college can cost more than a house. A former teaching assistant recently wrote to the New York Times about his experience with grade expectations. He would try to explain it this way when students asked for a top grade just for studying hard in chemistry class: What if a baseball player came to spring training and worked harder than all 20 the others, but still could not play well? Would the team accept him anyway, just because he tried so hard? The students would say no. But most of them would still ask for an A. 本文为议论文。 24.What does the text mainly discuss? A.Whether students deserve high marks just for trying hard. B.Whether students are allowed to answer calls in class. C.How students can get a good grade in a course. D.Why students put a lot of effort in their studies. They believe students are owed a good grade simply because they put a lot of effort into a class可知,本文主要讨论的是“付出努力是否应该得高分”,故选A项。 25.According to the research, most of the students ________. A.thought they did most of the work B.thought it was all right to answer the call during class C.objected to deciding grades only by the quality of a student's work D.agreed that they should be given the highest mark because of their hard work 解析 C 细节理解题。 26.Which of the following opinions do social critics agree with about children's activities? A.Only by playing an important role in the activities can you get an award. B.An award is prepared for anyone who performs best in the activities. C.Those who are not active in the activities will be rejected. D.Whoever takes part in the activities can get an award. 根据第五段第二句中的everyone gets an award just for trying, so no one will feel rejected可知,他们认为“只要参与就可得到奖品”,故选D项。 27.What does the teaching assistant want to tell students by mentioning a baseball player? A.Effort can lead to good results. B.Effort and results are quite different. C.No pains, no gains. 20 D.Where there is a will, there is a way. Would the team accept him anyway, just because he tried so hard的反问来看,他想让学生知道“努力不等同于取得好的结果”,故选B项。 C Wearable sensors(传感器) could one day interpret the gestures in sign language and translate them into English, providing a hightech solution to communication problems between deaf people and those who don't understand sign language. Engineers at Texas A&M University are developing a wearable device that can sense movement and muscle activity in a person's arms. The device works by figuring out the gestures a person is making by using two sets of sensors: one that responds to the motion of the wrist and the other to the muscular(肌肉的) movements in the arm. A program then wirelessly receives this information and changes the data into the English translation. “Most of the technology was based on visionbased or camerabased solutions,” said study lead researcher Roozbeh Jafari, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M University. These existing designs, Jafari said, are not enough, because often when someone is talking with sign language, he or she is using hand gestures combined with specific finger movements. “I thought maybe we should look into combining motion sensors and muscle activation,” Jafari told Live Science. “And the idea here was to build a wearable device.” The researchers built a system that can recognize words that people use most commonly in their daily conversations. Jafari said that once the team starts expanding the program, the engineers will include more words that are less frequently used, in order to build up a more substantial vocabulary. One drawback of it is that the system has to be “trained” to respond to each individual that wears the device, Jafari said. This training process involves asking the user to repeat or do each hand gesture a couple of times, which can take up to 30 minutes to complete. 28.How does the new device work? A.By figuring out gestures from fingers. B.By connecting the wrist and the fingers. 20 C.By linking the arm and the fingers. D.By collecting information from the wrist and the arm. 29.The researchers eventually decided on a wearable device to ________. A.make it easier to monitor the gestures when people are talking B.make the translation process faster C.compete with existing designs D.make it userfriendly 解析 A 细节理解题。 30.We can replace the underlined word “substantial” in Paragraph 4 by “________”. A.necessary B.influential C.extensive D.essential 解析 C 词义猜测题。根据第四段中的…expanding the program, the engineers will include more words that are less frequently used… 31.What can we infer from the text? A.The device has greatly increased in sales. B.The device still requires much improvement. C.We should work out for 30 minutes. D.We should be trained to respond quickly. D Looking back on China's road to outer space, people can easily find it has not been very smooth. In the past years, Chinese people have made hard and determined efforts to realize the dream their ancestors had for thousands of years. After China's first satellite into the Earth's orbit in 1970 came four flights of unmanned Shenzhou missions from 1999 to 2002. The country carried out its first onepiloted space flight in October, 2003, making China the third country in the world to have independent human spaceflight ability after the Soviet Union and the 20 United States. Then came another breakthrough on October 12, 2005, when Shenzhou Ⅵ, China's second human spaceflight, was launched, with a crew of two astronauts. What's more, the landmark(里程碑) spacewalk done by Zhai Zhigang, one of the three boarding Shenzhou Ⅶ, launched on September 25, 2008, leads the country further in its space exploration. Meanwhile, China's moon exploration project, started in 2004, has also been progressing satisfactorily. Fifty years after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first manmade satellite, China's first circumlunar(绕月的) satellite Chang'e Ⅰ took off on October 24, 2007, which became another milestone in China's space achievements after the abovementioned manned flights. Chang'e Ⅰ was expected to fulfill four scientific goals, one of which was to probe(探测) mineral elements on the Moon, especially those not existent on the Earth. It's said that the lunar regolith(月壤) is abundant in helium3, a clean fuel that may support the Earth's energy demands for more than a century. Nearly 3 years later, October 1, 2010 witnessed the blasting off(发射) of Chang'e Ⅱ, China's 2nd unmanned lunar probe, marking another step forward in Moon exploration. This time the aim is to test the key techniques of Chang'e Ⅲ and Chang'e Ⅳ, as a preparation for a soft lunar landing in the future. With great expectations, people all over the world are looking forward to China's greater space achievements. 32. What can we know according to the text? A.China sent its first satellite into the Moon's orbit in 1970. B.China is the third country in Asia to make human spaceflight. C.By now, altogether 5 astronauts have made successful spaceflight by Shenzhou spaceship. D.The launching of Chang'e Ⅰ became the third milestone in China's space achievements. 根据第二段中的…first onepiloted space flight in October, 2003以及Then came another breakthrough on October 12, 2005,再结合第三段中的…Chang'e Ⅰ…which became another milestone… 33. Paragraph 2 mainly deals with information about China's ________. 20 A.landmark spacewalk B.manned Shenzhou missions C.first circumlunar satellite D.unmanned Shenzhou missions 解析 B 段落大意题。 34. We can infer from the text that ________. A. China's road to outer space has not been very smooth for a long time B.the lunar regolith is believed to be rich in a clean fuel called helium3 C.China's lunar exploration project was started in 2004 and completed in 2007 D.China's scientists are researching into techniques for soft lunar landing 解析 D 推理判断题。 35. What can be the best title for the text? A.Ancient Chinese's Dream B.China's Major Space Achievements C.China's Moon Exploration D.The World's Great Expectations 解析 B 标题归纳题。 Have you asked yourself the question “What do I really want to do with my life”? The question can come when you're 18 or when you're 50, and it's always a difficult process to work through. It's not hopeless, though! 36 Think about where you'll be in five years. The question works in either job interviews or financial plans. 37 Thankfully, that's okay, and sometimes just trying to answer the question is all you need. 38 The ideas might sound a little silly on the surface. But if you know what ideas you stand on, you might be clear about a possible career or lifestyle path. Silly or not, the ideas are to give yourself a call to action to define how you want to do things. 20 Volunteer or shadow someone in a job you're interested in. Want to write a book? Go to a grad school! 39 Just take a couple of days to try on the lifestyle. To do this, you can try volunteering or shadowing someone at their jobs. Dig into those side projects. Sometimes, the best way to really figure out what you want to do with yourself is good old trial and error. 40 A.Follow your idea. B.In many cases, this just means trying out various side projects you're interested in with all the free time you have. C.Here are a few ways to help you figure it out. D.Think about being a lawyer? Apply for a law school! E.But it's one of those annoyingly difficult questions to answer. F.It's easy to write your own beliefs but you don't have to do it in a specific way. G.Write your personal beliefs. What do I really want to do with my life这一问题,C项承上启下,说明有解决这一问题的方法,下文对这些方法进行详细介绍,故选C项。 37. But if you know what ideas you stand on…及…the ideas are to give yourself a call… Want to write a book? Go to a grad school! Respecting the cultural differences of other people consists of more than just avoiding. It also consists of 41 them in events that have to do with your culture 20 and participating(参加) in customs and 42 surrounding theirs. Education is the key to understanding another person's culture, and paves the way for 43 conversation about the different cultures that make up the melting pot that is the world population. Include people from other 44 in activities and events surrounding your own. For example, if you attend a Southern Baptist church, 45 your Russian friend to attend services and participate. Not only is this a new way for your friend to 46 your culture, but he'll also get a taste of what Southern culture is like. Ask 47 if you don't know something. Never think things about a culture 48 from your own. Most people would rather you ask a question about their culture than 49 your own ideas or conclusions, which may be 50. When you ask, do so respectfully. Don't 51 something like, “Why do your people do this or that?” Instead, try, “I've noticed that you do XYZ 52 from I do. She gave me a 65(thank) smile, she had a dollar and change left, and she and her friend left the store. I believed that I would never see 66 again. I don't remember how long it was, but they did return later that same evening just 67(bring) me a beautiful card that said “It's people like you 68 make the world a better place to live in.” I am so grateful 69 that bit of appreciation. It is really an important concern to everyone of us. Therefore, we must spare no effort to take some measures to solve this problem. First of all, believe in ourselves. Be confident when we are faced with difficult situations. Another way is “to learn to relax”. The best way to relax is to take part in physical activities regularly, which can also help us stay in shape. Third, talk with our family members or friends, from whom we can get some valuable advice. Finally, make a reasonable plan. It will remind us what to do every day in an orderly way, thus reducing our stress. All in all, to deal with stress, we can find a number of various ways. But as far as I am concerned, I would prefer to solve the problem in this way;that is to say, the best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life. Thanks for your listening! 20查看更多
