Just a goodbye would not do, yet that was all I had ever learned from the terrible books. So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching madly for words that would smooth over the visitor’s leaving and make them feel they would be welcome to come again. In my unease, I often hid behind the skirts of my Chinese husband’s kindness.‎ Then finally, listening to others, I began to pick up the phrases that eased relationships and sent people off not only successfully but also skillfully.‎ Partings for the Chinese include a lot of necessary habitual practice. Although I’m not expected to observe or even know all the rules, as a foreigner, I’ve had to learn the expressions of politeness and protest (表示拒绝的话) at a leaving-taking.‎ The Chinese feel they must see a guest off to the farthest possible point ‎ ‎— down the flight of stairs to the street below or perhaps all the way to the nearest bus stop. I’ve sometimes waited half an hour or more for my husband to return from seeing a guest off, since he’s gone to the bus stop and waited for the next bus to arrive.‎ That’s very well, but when I’m the guest being seen off, my protests are always useless. My hostess or host, or both, insists on seeing me down the stairs and well on my way, with my repeating the “Don’t bother (give the trouble) to see me off” at every landing. If I try to go fast to discourage them from following, they are simply out to the discomfort of having to run after me. Better to accept the inevitable (不可避免的).‎ Besides, that’s going against Chinese custom, because haste (doing things quickly) is to be avoided. What do you say when you part from someone? “Go slowly.” Not “farewell” or “Godspeed ”(祝福), but “Go slowly.” To the Chinese it means “Take care,” or “Watch your step”, or some such caution, but translated literally (字面意思) it means “Go slowly.”‎ ‎41. It is stated clearly that the writer ________.‎ A. is interested in the Chinese-language textbooks B. is proud of being able to greet people at the door C. is unsatisfied with the Chinese-language textbooks D. is afraid of the standard phrases from the textbooks ‎42. It can be inferred that the writer ________.‎ A. speaks Chinese B. lives in the USA C. dislikes her husband’s ways of seeing guests off ‎ D. refuses to follow the Chinese custom of seeing guests off ‎43. According to the passage all of the following are necessary in the Chinese partings except ________.‎ A. seeing the guests off to the farthest possible point B. protesting again and again C. running after the guests D. saying “Go slowly”‎ ‎44. The Chinese use “Go slowly.” in their partings so as to ________.‎ A. slow down the guests B. ask the guests to take care C. wish the guests a happy journey D. warn the guests of danger on their way home B I remember that when I was in my teens, I used to rebel at many of the Do’s and Don’ts my parents taught me. For example, when I kept playing jazz records on the record player, my father would condemn(谴责) such music as making noise and replace them with disks of classical music that I always considered extremely dull. ‎ My mom and dad were also very particular about the friends I went out ‎ with, always quoting the saying “One rotten apple could ruin a whole barrel of apples.” When I insisted on sleeping with my pet dog Peppy, they immediately said NO because they thought that I would be bitten by fleas(虱子). ‎ These are just a few examples of many of the things that I thought my parents were unreasonable about. Today, however, I am also the father of a boy of fifteen, and I find that I, too, am pressuring my son with a lot of rules that he seems to find hard to accept. The other day, I noticed that my son’s hair was too long, so I told him to go to the barber’s and get it cut short. Usually, he is fairly obedient, but this time he put his foot down. ‎ ‎“What’s wrong with long hair?” he said. “All my buddies(伙伴) have long hair. And besides, it’s my own hair, isn’t it? I don’t think you have the authority to order me to cut it short, even if you’re my father!” ‎ When I was a boy, if I had spoken in such a way to my father, he would have taught me a good lesson. But I suddenly realized that we are now living in a more liberal(自由的) world, and that my son’s insistence on wearing his hair long was only an example of the generation gap that existed between us. So I tried to be more gentle understanding and now he still wears his hair long.‎ ‎45. What does the writer intend to tell us?‎ A. Parents are always too strict with their children.‎ B. It is natural that teenagers don’t know what they should do.‎ C. Parents should be more understanding and gentle to their children.‎ D. There’re a lot of examples of the generation gap.‎ ‎46. The underlined word “obedient” in the third paragraph probably means ________.‎ A. willing to do what one is told to do B. not willing to do what one is told to do C. ready to help others D. fond of quarrelling with others ‎47. Which of the following statements is TRUE?‎ A. There was no generation gap between the writer and his father.‎ B. Many teenage boys prefer to wear long hair.‎ C. Fathers have no right to teach their sons to do or not to do something.‎ D. The writer often teaches his son lessons.‎ C The World Health Organization(WHO) planned to study the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. ‎ They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The ‎ diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes colour and may break out in open sores. The hair changes colour and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced. ‎ The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers gave them foods full of starches(淀粉) instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives. ‎ ‎48. From the passage we learn that kwashiorkor is a disease caused by _______. ‎ A. poor living conditions B. lack of proteins in food C. much stomach liquids D. lack of food ‎49. It is difficult to discover kwashiorkor because _______. ‎ A. it has no viruses B. it does not last long ‎ C. it is hard to see signs of it D. it is like other diseases ‎50. What is mentioned as a simple but reasonable way of curing this disease?‎ A. Taking a special medicine.‎ B. Avoiding any food containing starch.‎ C. Having more meat or milk.‎ D. Taking medicines full of proteins.‎ ‎51. What’s the best title for the article?‎ A. Milk and Meat Are Daily Necessities B. Kwashiorkor and Bad Eating Habits C. A New Form of Illness in Africa D. A Case of Eating Habits D ‎ By the time the Montgomery Improvement Association chose the 26-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr as its leader, the hours-old bus boycott by the black citizens of Montgomery, Alabama, was already a great success. King would later write that his unexpected call to leadership "happened so quickly that I did not have time to think it through." "It is likely that if I had, I would have turned down the nomination(提名 ) ."‎ ‎ Although press reports at the time paid much attention to his public speaking skills, King was actually an unwilling leader of a movement started by others. His later writings and private letters show that he doubted the movement at that time. In the early days of his taking part, King was troubled by telephone threats, disagreement within the black community and Montgomery's "get tough" policy. One night, as he considered ways to "move out of the picture without appearing a coward(懦夫) ," he began to pray aloud and, at that moment, "experienced ‎ the presence of the God as I had never experienced him before."‎ ‎ He would later admit that when the boycott began, he didn't firmly believe in Gandhian (甘地) principles. Although he had been introduced to those in college, he had remained doubtful. "I thought the only way we could solve our problem of segregation(种族隔离 ) was an armed revolution," he recalled.‎ ‎ Only after his home was bombed in late January did King reconsider his views on violence. (At the time, he was looking for a gun permit and was protected by armed bodyguards. ) Competing with each other to influence King were two pacifists(和平主义者) : Bayard Rustin and the Rev. Glenn E. Smiley. Rustin was shocked to discover a gun in King's house, while Smiley told fellow pacifists that King's home was "an arsenal(军火库)".‎ ‎ By the time the Supreme Court(最高法院) said that the bus company was wrong to separate blacks from whites in November 1956, King had been permanently changed.‎ ‎ "Living through the real experience of the protest, non-violence became more than a method to which I gave intellectual assent(同意)," he would later explain. "It became a commitment(约束) to a way of life."‎ ‎ After the boycott, King allowed himself to think deeply about his growing fame and his own self doubts. "To be honest, I'm worried to death," he said. "A man who succeeds at 27 has a difficult job ahead. People will be expecting me to pull rabbits out of the hat for the rest of my life."‎ ‎52. What did King think of his nomination as leader of the Montgomery Boycott?‎ ‎ A. He hadn't expected it.‎ ‎ B. He had to think about it carefully.‎ ‎ C. He would refuse to accept it.‎ ‎ D. He was prepared to accept it.‎ ‎53. Which of the following was the immediate cause that made King change his view on violence?‎ ‎ A. The education he received in college.‎ B. The attack on his home.‎ ‎ C. His belief in the Gandhian principles.‎ ‎ D. The influence of two active non-violence men.‎ ‎54. What happened to King after he successfully led the boycott against the bus company?‎ ‎ A. He was worried to death.‎ ‎ B. He knew he would be murdered.‎ ‎ C. He firmly believed in non-violence.‎ ‎ D. He was proud of being famous at an early age.‎ ‎55. What did King mean by the sentence "People will be expecting me to pull rabbits out of the hat for the rest of my life"?‎ ‎ A. His dream was to become a magician.‎ ‎ B. Many people were admiring his great success.‎ ‎ C. More and more people began to trust him.‎ ‎ D. People would expect him always to succeed.‎ ‎ ‎ 山西省忻州市静乐县静乐一中高二下学期阶段性考试英语试题答题卡 ‎ IV.单词拼写(10分)‎ ‎56.To their surprise, the party turned out to be very ________________(成功).‎ ‎57.One of the ____________(优势)of living on the top floor is that you can see far.‎ ‎58.Water is a liquid at room _______________(温度) ‎ ‎59.Jules Verne __________(奠定) the foundation of modern science fiction.‎ ‎60.Most people invited to the meeting were famous _______________(科学家).‎ ‎61.Water and ice are the same s_____________ that exist in different forms.‎ ‎62.We are working on sending a m___________ spaceship for two astronauts to the Moon.‎ ‎63.They disagreed ,that is, they had v_____________ opinions.‎ ‎64.Zhongguancun was set up as a special e____________ zone in the late 1990s.‎ ‎65.The famous building is located by the river and a_____________ many visitors every year..‎ VI. 短文改错:(10分 )‎ With the rapid development of society, great changes have been ‎ ‎66._______‎ taken place in family life.
