I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years, my mind was planning this beautiful future.‎ Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.‎ After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.‎ Enjoying life’s precious quirks (偶发事件) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn’t content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.‎ I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.‎ ‎24. According to the author, which of the following is the real success for a person?‎ A. Being famous. B. Material achievements.‎ C. Good car and big house. D. Truly living life each day.‎ ‎26. What does the author want to tell the readers?‎ A. His opinion about success. B. The true meaning of studying.‎ C. How to achieve success. D. The true meaning of life.‎ ‎27. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?‎ A. He didn’t want to take all the exams.‎ B. His teacher died before the death of his great-grandma.‎ C. The author didn’t do well in all the exams. ‎ D. The author thinks that success is not promised.‎ C In today’s society, language plays a key role in defining gender (性别) by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal vocabulary. Each one of these different types of ways of communicating is obviously different between men and women.‎ Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men; this is due to the fact that women tend to be ‎ interrupted more often than men are, and also have the ability to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than men. In one study it was found that women spoke for an average of three minutes describing a painting, as opposed to the thirteen-minute average it took men to describe it.‎ Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very hard for one another to understand what the opposite sex is trying to say. Men’s body language is much more reserved when talking to women. Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talking to them. Men avoid other people’s body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom. Women are by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.‎ Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation is going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning about our styles of communicating with each other, I have decided that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language”? The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or herself after talking with someone of the opposite sex, “I wonder if there’s something there?” would no longer exist.‎ ‎28. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A. The differences between men’s and women’s languages.‎ B. The different speed of men’s and women’s speech.‎ C. The ability of men’s and women’s spoken language.‎ D. The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.‎ ‎29. In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph?‎ A. Politeness of communication. B. Understanding of speech roles.‎ C. Application of body language. D. Speed of understanding.‎ ‎30. What is the author’s attitude to the differences between men’s and women’s communication?‎ A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Ambitious. D. Skeptical.‎ ‎31. What is the best title for the text? ‎ A. Women, born excellent talkers B. Men’s and women’s social roles C. Opposite gender, different language D. Vocabulary and communication D Managers and office busybodies might be keen on a clean desk, but it seems that in terms of productivity, they could have it all wrong. “A messy desk can actually lead people towards clearer thinking,” say researchers from Germany.‎ The researchers found in a series of linked studies---using a messy desk and a messy shop front---that people actually thought more clearly when all around was chaos, as they sought to simplify the tasks at hand. That is, visual and mental clutter (杂乱) forces human beings to focus and think more clearly. For instance, famous thinkers and writers such as Albert Einstein and Roald Dahl have been notorious (臭名昭著的) for their untidy desks.‎ ‎“Messy desks may not be as detrimental as they appear to be, as the problem-solving approaches they seem to promote work efficiency or enhance employees’ creativity in problem solving,” say the authors.‎ ‎“Business and government managers often promote ‘clean desk’ policies to avoid disorganized offices and messy desks, for the purpose of boosting work efficiency and productivity,” writes a researcher, Jia Liu of the University of Groningen. “This practice is based on the conventional wisdom that a disorganized and messy environment can clutter one’s mind and complicate one’s judgments.”‎ ‎“However, not all evidence supports this conventional link between a messy environment and a messy mind”. The scientists tested people’s response in various messy environments, including a messy shop front, a disorganized desk, and even a work environment where a language task reminded people of messiness.‎ The authors found in the series of six studies that people tended towards simplicity in their thinking.“They classified products in a simpler manner, were willing to pay more for a T-shirt that has a simple-looking picture, and sought less variety in their choices”, said the researchers.‎ ‎32. Why did the author take Albert Einstein and Ronald Dahl for example?‎ ‎ A. To tell readers untidy desks can make you as famous as them.‎ ‎ B. To inform readers of one way to success—untidy desks.‎ ‎ C. To attract readers and show the author’s wide range of knowledge.‎ D. To convince readers that untidiness is not all that bad.‎ ‎33. The underlined word “detrimental” probably mean_____.‎ ‎ A. common B. accessible C. disadvantageous D. beneficial ‎34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. People tend to clear up the mess before thinking clearly.‎ ‎ B. A messy environment will certainly lead to a messy mind.‎ ‎ C. A clean environment will do great harm to work efficiency.‎ ‎ D. All people are not in favor of “clean desk” in the office. ‎ ‎35. What is the main idea of this passage?‎ ‎ A. Messy desks in the office can have a positive effect on employees.‎ B. We should make our office messy to improve our work efficiency.‎ C. The messier the desks are, the more efficient the employees are.‎ D. Clean desks can promote the employees’ productivity and creativity.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to Do Man-on-the-Street Interviews The man-on-the-street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the spot. 36 But with these tips, your first man-on-the-street interview experience can be easy.‎ ‎·When your boss or professor sends you out to do man-on-the-street interviews for a story, think about the topic and develop a list of about ten general questions relating to it. In today’s class I’ll introduce the stories behind some famous writers’ pen names. The first writer I’ll introduce to you is Charles Dickens. When he started writing, he used the pen name, Boz. He once explained that Boz was the nickname of his younger brother. The second one is J.K.Rowling. Rowling’s real name is Joanna Rowing. She has no middle name. The letter K in his pen name was mysterious. Later, Rowling said it came from Kathleen, her grandmother. Next is Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was dismissed from his job as editor-in-chief of the Jack-O-Lantern Magazine because he broke the law on a party. However, he kept writing for this magazine under his middle name, Seuss. Years later, when his first book was published, Seuss ‎ added the “Dr”in front because his father always wanted him to be a doctor. OK, the last one is William Sydney Porter, who is known as his pen name, O. Henry. While he was in prison, Porter published his first story under that pen name. It’s said that William’s pen name was inspired by his prison guard.‎
