Because of my careful savings, I did not have to work during the school year. Then, summer came and it was time to work harder than ever. I continued working as a waitress at night, instructed tennis camps several mornings a week and worked as a secretary for a few hours in the afternoons. I even decided to take a class at a community(社区)college. This class at the community college saved me $650. It was an extremely tiring summer and made me anxious to return to my relatively easy life at the university. During my second and third years of undergraduate schooling, I decided to work about five hours per week in the campus(校园)admissions office answering phones. This provided a little spending money and kept me from drawing my savings out. The overall situation looked hopeful as I approached my senior year as long as I could make as much money as I had the previous summer. I wanted to go to Israel to study for 3 weeks, but I hesitated in making this decision because it would cost me $1,600 more to get the credits in Israel. About two weeks later my Mom called to tell me that I had $1,600 in the bank that I had forgotten about! One of my concerns about this trip was not only the cost, but the loss of time to make money; however, I made as much that summer in the ten weeks when I was at home as I had made during the fourteen weeks when I was at home the summer before. The way everything worked together to make this trip possible was one of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me. This experience has shaped me in many important ways. The first thing that I learned was the importance of a strong work ethic (伦理).Working long hours did a lot to develop my character and helped me learn the value of a dollar. It also made me learn how to search for creative ways to settle difficult situations. 21. Where did the writer probably work part-time before attending the university? A. In a restaurant B. In the tennis camps C. In a company D. In the admissions office 22. The writer took a class at a community college mainly because_____. A. she wanted to save money B. life there was relatively easy C. summer time was tiring D. it was required by the university 23. The writer’s major concern about the trip to Israel was that _____. A. her mother would not give her approval B. she would fail to get credits in Israel C. a well-paid summer job would be lost D. $1,600 couldn’t be drawn out in time 24. The passage is mainly about how the writer _____. A. made money on the college campus B. managed to make full use of her vacation C. was forced to support herself by her mother D. was shaped by working part-time through college B The James Dyson Award winners for 2011 have been announced, and the grand prize winner is a machine. Edward Linacre of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne has tapped the Namib beetle(纳米比甲虫)—a desert creature that survives in the extremely dry conditions on Earth—to create an irrigation system that can pull liquid straight out of dry desert air. Airdrop, as the system is known, borrows a trick from the Namib beetle, which can live in areas that receive just half an inch of rain per year by harvesting early morning fogs from the air that gathers on its back during the early morning hours. Its skin helps to collect water drops passing in the wind, which then become liquid water. Airdrop mimics this idea, in a larger amount, though. The self-powering machine pumps water into a network of underground pipes, where it cools enough for water to condensate (凝结). From there the water is delivered to the roots of nearby plants. Linacre’s math shows that about 11.5 milliliters can be harvested from every cubic meter of air, and further development could raise that number even higher. Such a system as Airdrop could provide regular water to plants being grown in the world’s driest areas. And because it is low cost and self-powered, the $14,000 award from Dyson (Linacre’s university also gets an additional $14,000) should help speed that along. 25. What does Airdrop have in common with the Namib beetle? A. It has a useful irrigation system. B. It looks exactly the same as the beetle. C. It pulls water drops out of dry desert air. D. It works only in the early summer morning. 26. It can be learnt that ______. A. Airdrop cannot work without a trained operator B. Edward Linacre designed a robot named Airdrop C. Airdrop works much better during harvest seasons D. Airdrop is based on the research of the Namib beetle’s trick 27. The underlined word “mimics”(in Paragraph 3) most probably means ______. A. ignores B. refuses C. copies D. recommends 28. We can infer from the passage that ______. A. Linacre will share the prize of $14,000 with his university B. farmers in the dry areas will benefit little from this invention C. Airdrop will be further improved and become more effective D. all kinds of costs of Airdrop will become higher and higher C Langston Hughes is usually thought of as a poet. But he also wrote novels, plays, short stories, essays, autobiographies, newspaper columns(栏目), children’s books, and the words to operas. He also translated into English the works of foreign poets. From his childhood, Langston Hughes developed a love of reading books, which grew into a desire to write. He wanted to reproduce the powerful effect other writers had made upon him.Among the early influences on his writing were poets Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg and Paul Lawrence Dunbar. One day, the poet Vachel Lindsay ate in a hotel where Hughes was working. Hughes put some poems he had written next to Lindsay’s dinner plate. Lindsay gave a poetry reading later that night. He read some of Hughes’s poetry, too. Newspapers across the country wrote about Lindsay’s poetry reading. Hughes became known as a new black poet. A year later, Hughes returned to New York. He was the first poet to use the rhythms(韵律)of black music. He often wrote about the everyday experiences of black working people. And he helped bring the movement of jazz and the sound of black speech into poetry. Langston Hughes experimented with his writing. Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today’s stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world’s attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives. 36 Celebrities — famous people — worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were before everyone knew their names. Over time, they feel separated and alone. 37 In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do. Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. 38 If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running away from it? 39 Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place. Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. 40 They are tired of being famous already. A. When they say something silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever. B. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. C. What can they do to avoid being tracked down by Paparazzi? D. In some way, celebrities are just ordinary people who deserve a normal life like every one of us. E. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature. F. The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. G. The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. 第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) Peter Brown, aged 41, is the manager of a club from Dover Heights.
