An Oceans Vacuum There’s a collection of plastic rubbish in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s bigger than Texas and growing. The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both expensive and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project suggests a 62-mile-long floating wall that would use natural currents to trap rubbish . If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the rubbish by 42 % over 10 years. An Airport for Drones (无人机) As Amazon, Google, and others get ready for drone delivery service, there is one big question: What kinds of home bases will their drones have? Rwanda, in Africa, may have the answer. There, workers will soon start work on three “drone ports”. Construction is set to be completed in 2020. 21、What do we know about Nike? A、It offers free shoes to the disabled. B、It is designing new shoes frequently. C、Because they’re easier to construct than roads. D、Because there are too many goods. B Tu Youyou, the 86yearold Chinese female scientist, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in Stockholm on October 5, 2015. Tu is the first Chinese Nobel winner in Medicine for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria. Based on a fourthcentury traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) text, together with her team, she discovered artemisinin(青蒿素)from sweet wormwood through trial and error, the key drug that has reduced death rates of malaria. Tu delivered a speech titled “Artemisinin is a gift from TCM to the world”. She has demanded more research into the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and called for joint efforts worldwide to develop more uses for TCM, which she called “a great treasure with thousands of years' history ”. She said that by combining TCM with modern scientific technologies, “more potential can be discovered in searching for new drugs”. According to the WHO, more than 240 million people in Africa have benefited from artemisinin, and more than 1.5 million lives have been saved since 2000 thanks to the drug. Apart from its contribution to the global fight against malaria, TCM played a vital role in the deadly outbreak of SARS across China in 2003. Besides treating viruses, TCM has been most effective in treating difficult multisource illnesses, and using nonmedicinal methods such as acupuncture (针灸疗法) and breathing exercises. However, TCM is seldom understood or accepted by the West. “Tu's success will bring more recognition and respect for TCM,” experts say. The Western world should learn to appreciate the value of the treasures of TCM, which will lead to more basic scientific research into ancient TCM texts and ways to explore research findings worldwide. 24、Which of the following is true? ______. A、Tu Youyou discovered artemisinin easily. B、Tu Youyou was the first Nobel Prize winner in China. C、Tu Youyou got the Nobel Prize for her research into TCM. D、Tu's discovery of artemisinin has helped cut Malaria death rate. 25、What benefit does TCM bring to people? A、It helps save 240 million lives in China. B、It will probably help develop new drugs C、It helps carry out scientific research worldwide. D、It helps fight against only malaria and SARS . 26、Which of the following can be the best title of the text? A、TCM : a great treasure to the world B、Artemisinin : a key drug to fight against malaria. C、Tu Youyou’s success and influence on TCM. D、Tu Youyou’s research into the value of TCM . C This year, Facebook, the social media website, announced that it would cooperate with several news organizations—including The New York Times and the BBC—to place news stories directly into users' personal Facebook web pages. The deal shows how important social media has become to news organizations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing. Many thought of it as the death of the newspaper, when Google News began in 2002. It had no human editor. Instead, Google used, and still uses, a computer programme that selects news stories according to the readers' personal interests. More recently, the Associated Press and Yahoo have been publishing computerwritten articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports—areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data. I think we should be concerned about such developments. One concern is that Facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline(副业), a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn't their main function—so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it. There's another concern that computerwritten articles are not actual journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A wellwritten news story offers a voice to each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge. Although economics and the speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computerwritten story over a carefully shaped article—at least for daily news—I don't think the computers will be writing any indepth articles for a while yet. 27、Computerwritten news reports have focused on sports and finance because ________. A、these are the most popular topics for online readers. B、information on these topics is more easily available. C、writing quality is less important than accuracy in these areas. D、there are fewer journalists specializing in these areas 28、What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A、Business. B、Journalism. C、Facebook. D、Advertising. 29、In Paragraph 4, which of the following is a characteristic of a wellwritten news article? A、The information presented is up to date. B、The author's opinion is clear. C、The language used is beautiful. D、Different views on the topic are presented. 30、What is the main purpose of the article? A、To express concern about recent trends in online news. B、To advise readers against reading computerwritten news. C、To report on a new computer service offered by Facebook. D、To describe the process of online news reporting. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项) Travel Abroad Do's and Don'ts Planning a trip abroad with family or friends this summer break? You look so different from when we were in school. M: Hey, Jody! I know. I got rid of the long hair and keep a beard now. Text 2 M: What’s wrong with me? I can’t stop shaking, and I feel so cold and tired. W: You’ve caught a bad cold. I’m afraid you have to stay in bed for three days and drink plenty of water. Here’s some medicine. Text 3 W: Your piano playing is so beautiful, Matt! How long have you been playing? M: Eleven years! But now I’m eighteen and going away to college. I may stop for a while. I’ll need to focus on my studies. Text 4 M: Can you stop by the grocery store after work today? We’re out of milk, eggs, and bread. I have a big meeting this afternoon, and I’ll be home late. W: Okay. I have to pick up the kids, but I’ll do it after that. Text 5 M: That’s a very pretty dress you’re wearing! Did you just buy it from the department store? W: Thanks! It’s actually my sister’s dress. Her friend Julie made it for her. Julie’s very talented. Text 6 W: Hi, I bought this dress yesterday and I just discovered a hole in it. Is it possible to exchange it? M: May I take a look, please? W: Sure. M: Thanks. Oh…I’m afraid we don’t have the same size in blue anymore. W: What about one size larger? M: Size 9 has sold out, too. We only have this blue dress in size 11 and 12 now. W: Okay. What other dark colors do you have in my size? M: How about black or purple? W: I don’t look good in purple. So I will get the black one. M: OK. Text 7 W: Hi, I need to take money out of my account. I have $500 in this account, and I need it all now. M: I’m sorry, miss. The second bedroom is small, though. Perhaps you could use it as an office. W: Actually, my husband is a musician, so it’ll be his music room. Is there another bathroom?
