What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University, Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截) below the knee(膝盖). Such a setback(挫折) could have easily ended the career of a less tough(坚强) person, but Ruggiero, who has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”, explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢) , he explains. The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn” patient who refused to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor. “It was a real setback, but after it was all over, I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick up right where I left off and continue my career, ’ ” Ruggiero said. Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers—they’re always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, ” he said. Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer before coming to his show, Ruggiero says he won’t shy away from the physical “weakness” his performance shows because of his condition. “A lot of people have come up to me, and they always say, ‘You’re such a role model and an inspiration, ’ ” he said. “I’m honored when people say that, of course, but I’m just trying to get on with my life.” 4.What makes Ruggiero’s new show unusual? It seemed like the world turned upside down; just last week my grandmother had passed away. I felt like I couldn’t get my feet on solid ground. That’s when my sister, Ella, came down the stairs with her long brown hair freshly washed. She sat next to me and smiled. Despite what was happening, everything would work out, her smile seemed to say. “Mom, do you think I could get my hair cut tomorrow?” Ella asked. “Sure,” Mom said, starting to wash the dishes. “I want to donate(捐赠) it to Locks of Love” Ella smiled. My mom stopped washing and turned to look at her. “Are you sure?” I noticed that Mom was holding back tears. This was a sacrifice(牺牲) for Ella. Her long hair was an important part of her. “Yeah, it’s just hair. Eventually it will grow back.” She said. “All right,” Mom said quietly, smiling again. Ella gave up a part of herself for a while. She let a piece of herself go to someone else, someone she didn’t know. That day she became my hero too. 8. On hearing little cousin had cancer, how did the author feel? A. Confused. B. Afraid. C. Sadly, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. Several thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships(战舰), with which to gain itself an empire(帝国). It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation. Even if a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with, and he can earn money by making charcoal(木炭) or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers? sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in and also hold the soil, thus preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert. 12. What is the most important function of trees? A. Providing fuel. B. Offering shade. C. Preventing natural disasters. D. Providing wood. 13. What eventually happened to the empire in paragraph 3? A. Its people died of hunger. B. It fell to pieces. C. It became a giant empire. D. It built many ships with wood. 14. It is implied in the passage that the villagers . A. want a plentiful supply of trees B. want firewood badly C. just want to get money D. don’t realize the importance of trees 15. What is the passage mainly concerned with? A. The benefits of trees. B. Trees and soil protection. C. The various uses of trees. D. Different attitudes toward trees. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The Winner’s Guide to Success Do you know what makes people successful? It is only natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, in my opinion, health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others' opinions affect your normal life. However, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise and changing unhealthy eating habits. The most important thing is that you keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your studies, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting. I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I'm looking forward to your next letter. Yours, Li Hua 查看更多
