B I went to a New York Mets fantasy camp in 1995, an incredible experience. I was fortunate to be on a team whose pitching coach was Mel Stottlemyre, the former Yankees star pitcher (投手) and Mets and Yankees coach. I was upset when Mel died of cancer on Jan. 13, 2018, at the age of 77. He was warm, friendly and treated us as if we were major leagues. At age 45, my experience in organizing baseball was limited to a couple of years in Little League in the Bronx, and softball games as an adult. I followed his career and knew about his diagnosis(诊断) of multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, in April 2000, and a stem cell transplant. In the summer of 2002, I was diagnosed as multiple myeloma and was told that I needed a stem-cell transplant by the same group of doctors at Memorial Sloa Kettering Cancer Center that had treated Mel. This shocked me, and frankly, I became quite depressed. I vowed that somehow I would try to speak to Mel. One day, my phone rang. Mel was calling from the Yankees' locker room. I asked him to tell me everything about his treatment. He spent 30 minutes generously explaining all the details. I hung on every word. He told me how well he was feeling and ended the conversation by giving me his home phone number! "I feel great,and I'm not retiring," he told me. This incredible experience lifted my spirits. But are they making things better? The ride-hailing(叫车) companies use smartphone apps to allow riders to call for a ride whenever and wherever. The rides are faster and cheaper than taxis. They are also more convenient and more comfortable than most public transportation choices, like buses, subways or trains. As Uber and Lyft spread out around the world, people in many countries acted against them because they put taxi companies and drivers out of business. It's not just taxi companies that are losing business. Public transportation is one of the most helpful ways of moving lots of people around. And it's an important way of fighting air pollution. But as ride-hailing companies have taken off in large cities, the number of people riding on public transportation has gone down. The ride-hailing companies say that their businesses will make it so that most people don't need to own cars at all. But their services seem to be putting even more cars on the streets. And all those cars affect traffic. San Francisco studied how their traffic changed after Uber and Lyft arrived. They discovered that the numbers of cars on the roads had increased a lot, making the city' s traffic much worse. Uber and Lyft recently ran their own study in six different US cities. Their results were the same —ride-hailing cars were indeed causing heavier traffic. And to make things worse, around 35% of the time, the ride-sharing cars weren't carrying any passengers. So if Uber and Lyft are greatly increasing traffic in many cities, what should people do? Some suggest ride-hailing companies introduce congestion pricing to big cities. But I think perhaps a better way would be to put some limits on the number of cars on the street, just as was done for taxis a century ago in many cities for the same reasons. 8. A 2019 study also found that children who regularly walk or bike to school are less likely to be overweight than those who travel by car or public transportation. Researchers think it could be promising for combating childhood obesity (肥胖). Still, study shows that in the US, just 13% of US students between age 5 and 14 usually walked or biked to school in 2009, according to Safe Routes to School, compared with 50% in 1969. In a 2016 report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), researchers found that at most schools, 10% or fewer of students walked or biked on an average day.
