The more he talked about the opportunity, the more interested I became. I left class thinking I might actually do it.‎ My immediate excitement gave in to excuses as the weeks passed. The trip would be expensive, I would have less time to spend with my family over winter break, and I hadn’t really traveled before. Most of all, I was terrified of taking the risk.‎ On the day I made my decision, I suddenly felt as if I had finally opened my eyes and seen myself clearly. Why was I so scared to take this chance? I had moved away from home, almost graduated college and overcome plenty of small-scale fears. How could I let fear get in the way of a ‎ once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? Besides, I had always dreamed of traveling the world and studying abroad was a major point on my bucket list(人生目标清单).‎ So I took the challenge. I was scared yet excited on the plane, but my fears faded as soon as the wheels touched the runway. I soon found myself immersed(沉浸) in ancient, ornate(华丽的) mountain-top temples. I spent my days teaching poor orphans simple English, learned a little Khmer myself and became an expert at avoiding terrible traffic and bargaining with Cambodian store owners. By the end of my stay, I had fallen in love with travel, exploration and a life of daily wonders.‎ My experience in Cambodia was incredible and life-changing. I came back a different person, but a better one: a better friend, sister, daughter, girlfriend and student. I came back a grown woman instead of a young girl.‎ After Cambodia, my life clicked into place(步入正轨). Before the trip, I hadn’t known what I wanted to do after graduation. Now I am planning on teaching English abroad as a volunteer. I am still amazed by my experience and thankful for everything it taught me. I now have a passion for conquering(征服) fears, big or small, and have a renewed faith in myself.‎ ‎4.The author’s excitement to go to Cambodia faded(消退) mainly because _________.‎ A. she could not afford the expensive trip B. she had no experience of traveling abroad C. she was scared of the risk she would be taking D. she preferred spending time with her family to traveling ‎5.How did the author decide to go to Cambodia in the end?‎ A. Some Parisians have even started to go to work in London. In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two great rival (竞争) cities, London and Paris, in " A Tale of Two Cities". These days, it might be A Tale of One City. Parisians are these days likely to smile in sympathy at a visitor's broken French and respond in polite English. As jobs grew lack at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the Channel. With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from immigration and customs. Paris, rich in beauty, is more attractive. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut down. "For me, the difference is that London is real, alive," said Trevor Wheeler, a banker. Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agrees. "I am French, but I'll stay in London," she said. There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago. "I think people laugh more in Paris," she said. In fact, London and Paris, with their obvious new similarities, are beyond the old descriptions. As the European Union gradually loosened controls, Londoners flocked into Paris to shop, eat and buy property (地产). "Both cities have changed beyond recognition." Said Larry Collins, a writer and sometimes a Londoner. Like most people who know both well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably. "I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s and it is still a wonderful place," Collins said. "But if I had to choose, it would be London. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better." But certainly not cheaper. In fancy parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris. Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice. ‎ ‎ Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be close enough so they don't have to choose. "I love Paris, my little neighborhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is so structured," she said. "In London, you can be who you want. No one cares." ‎ 8. At first, watches were created as women's decorative bracelets (手镯). At the same time, men used pocket watches. The first men's wrist watch was available in 1904. A pilot called Alberto Santos-Dumont personally asked a watchmaker to create a wrist watch to use on flights. Soon after that, men's wrist watches were available on the market. Since then, watches have been considered fashionable accessories(配饰) for men, and watchmakers have started to make men's fashion watches. At present, watches are not indispensable to tell the time for most people have cell phones which have watch functions. But a new market has been created for wrist watches, which are not only used to tell the time, but also as important fashion statement pieces. Generally speaking, watches for formal occasions are beautifully made and more like pieces of jewelry than watches. Men's watches for informal and semi-formal events include simple, slim ‎ designs and large-and-thick-sized styles. Nowadays, men usually don't follow any specific style of dress for watches, and the luxury brands of the expensive and strongly made sports watches have made them believe that they look more stylish because of their high prices. Some of the fashion watches have a diamond and some others are completely decorated with precious stones such as diamonds. Men's watches also have many advanced functions. For example, the dual-time watches for travelers make them know the time in most other countries as well as the time in their home if they are abroad. In a word, a men's watch is one of the few accessories for men's cupboard. Men can choose their most suitable watches to go with their personal taste. ‎ 12.
