The garden was obviously well-tended and the flowers were so gorgeous that every passer-by would stop for a look. It was like a baby that was taken good care of. One day a young painter went by the old man’s garden. He stared at the splendid garden and the special cottage, completely lost in admiration at the beauty of these sights, picturing how happy he would be if he lived in such a beautiful place. Then, suddenly he found the gardener was blind. Shocked, the painter approached him, asking, “Why are you busy looking after these flowers every day but in fact you cannot see them?” The blind man smiled , “ I can tell you some reasons. First, I was a gardener when I was young. I saw the flowers every day and I really enjoy the job. Second, although I can’t see these flowers now, I can touch them. Third, I can smell the sweetness of them. As to the last one, that's you.” “Me? But you don’t know me.” responded the painter, puzzled still. “Yeah, it’s true that I don’t know you. But I know flowers are like angels. I know many people who are enthusiastic about life would stop by and the beauty of my garden will get them into a good mood. Meanwhile, They also give me a chance to have a word with you here and to enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.” The old man’s words touched the painter. He grew flowers and regarded them as a link of minds. Every flower had eyes with which they could see kindness of the old man's heart and the sweetness of his soul. He grew flowers in his heart. Just like Beethoven, who was deaf, but composed a sea of attractive tunes, the blind man created beauty for the world. 24. Why did many passers-by like to stop by the garden? A. Because they wanted to help the old man. B. Because they were attracted by the flowers. C. Because they were curious about the stories. D. Because they were moved by the gardener. 25. A Disabled Man like Beethoven C. How to Take Care of Flowers D. Grow Flowers in the Heart C Is your school good for the environment? Being green wasn't easy for Kermit the Frog(a famous cartoon character)—but it is for a growing number of schools around the country. A "green" school is an environmentally friendly building that uses less energy by depending on earth's natural resources for heat、light、and power. Green schools have clean air, a lot of natural light, and renewable power sources. New studies show that green schools are not only good for the environment, but good for you too! Kids in classrooms with a lot of daylight scored 25 percent higher on reading and math tests than students who studied in rooms with less natural light. Students in schools with more natural light took three to four fewer sick days than students exposed to artificial classroom lighting. The further study found that those students had less dental decay(龋齿)because they were exposed to more of the vitamin D produced by the sun. The Willow School in N.J. is a school that was built as a green building in 2002. Parts of the building are made wholly from recycled materials. To help trap heat, for example, building workers filled the walls with material from old blue jeans instead of the traditional insulation(绝缘物)made of chemicals. Every classroom has skylights to allow most sunlight, and solar panels(太阳能电池板)line the south end of the building. It uses about 70 percent less energy than a non-green school. This helps the school cut down on high energy costs. Kate Burke Walsh, head of the Willow School, says, “Sunlight has an impact—you're happier .The clean、natural surroundings help both students and teachers handle stress and stay relaxed and focused…it's a very calming atmosphere.” 28. The question asked in the first paragraph is used to . A. show the writer's curiosity about your school B. care about the environment of your school C. expect readers to give a clear answer D. introduce the main topic of the passage 29. What is a green school like according to the passage? A. More trees are planted in the schoolyard. B. It makes full of natural resources. C. No energy is wasted everywhere. D. The buildings are painted green. 30. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. A student at a green school gets better grades. B. A green school absorbs more sunlight. C . How a green school is beneficial to the environment. D. How can students benefit from a green school. 31. What's the purpose of writing this passage? A. To change people attitudes on green schools. B. To introduce the advantages of green schools. C. To explain why green schools are popular. D. To persuade people to build green schools. D People are interested in eating raw foods or whole foods partly because eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation(酸堆积)in our body. Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and processed foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶)that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both cases, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite system that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens (过敏原)and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic(酸的) and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls(血管壁)and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism(新陈代谢)becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity. To stop this vicious circle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will balance the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore our enzyme balance. We need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If we truly want to change and help our body heal itself, we need to take an active approach. 32. We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that __________. A. it is essential for us to digest some fat B. cooked and processed foods are healthier C. foods with natural enzymes help us keep fit D. absorbing many nutrients is beneficial to our health 33. Processed foods will probably __________. A. stop body’s metabolism B. be difficult to digest C. lead to obesity D. destroy body’s cells 34. The underlined word “ vicious ” in the last paragraph probably means __________. A. harmful B. violent C. progressive D. positive 35. To change and help our body heal itself, we need to __________. A. consume enough acid foods B. identify enzyme production C. avoid restoring our enzyme balance D. eat the right types of raw and whole foods 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you feel a little guilty about your daily nap(小睡)after lunch? Don’t. Research shows that catching a short nap can be good for your brain.___36___ While a 30-to-90-minute nap in older adults appears to have brain benefits, anything longer than an hour and a half may create problems with cognition(认知), the ability to think and form memories, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. “___37___But it is related to one’s sleep cycles and quality,” says Charlene Gamaldo, M. D. , medical director of Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. “As the study showed, for older people, longer naps tend to interfere(妨碍)with cognition,” she says. ___38___Nearly 60 percent of participants reported napping after lunch for about an hour. Scientists found that people who napped for 20 to 90 minutes have a better memory than people who did not nap, or who napped for longer than 90 minutes. People who napped for 30 to 90 minutes were also better at figure drawing, another sign of good cognition. One theory explains poor cognition in those who take longer naps. ___39___“In the study, naps longer than 90 minutes could have been called ‘a second sleep’. This poor quality nighttime sleep, which requires extra-long napping during the day, can lead to cognitive problems,” Gamaldo adds. According to Gamald, longer naps can cause a couple of other problems, including temporary grogginess(眩晕无力)and inability to sleep at night. ___40___As a result, “People need to get the right quantity and quality of rest,” says Gamaldo. A. I consider napping to be a good thing. B. But it is the length of your nap that matters. C. Generally speaking, the older one gets, the longer naps one needs. D. Resting more during the day may be a sign of poor quality nighttime sleep. E. Researchers looked at data from 2,974 people in China aged 65 and older. F. Taking long naps during the day makes it difficult for one to fall asleep at night. G.
