It wasn’t forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson’s dictionary, Addison’s essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them funny, even at eight o’clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher. My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He asked us to keep journals. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other’s journals. Mine was passed to Joe, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make a joke of and said, “This writing isn’t fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven away my writing and teaching ever since. So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or self-defeating. 21.The passage mainly discusses _____. C Walking is so simple and convenient that it couldn’t possibly count as exercise, right? Wrong.Study after study shows that regular walking can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease. The study published in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice shows that the blood pressure of the overweight men being tested improved and the amount of body fat greatly decreased. That’s good news, because walking has now become the most popular fitness activity in the United States.Convenient, simple, and gentle on the joints, walking is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to maintain.According to a survey, four out of five women who start a walking program continue to walk, while half of women who attempt other types of aerobic exercise(有氧运动), such as swimming, drop out during the first few months. Here are some basics for walking exercise. Walk at a pace that makes you breathe heavily, but still able to talk. Your goal, first and foremost, is to walk five days a week, 30 minutes a walk.Do that, and you are getting the base-level amount of exercise that research says should maintain your health and vigor(精力). Walk for as long as you are comfortable the first week, even if it is just to your mailbox and back. Each following week, increase that amount by no more than 10 percent. Start every walk with five minutes of easy-paced walking, about the same pace at which you do shopping, to get your body warmed up.Then, cool down at the end of each walk with another five minutes of easy-paced walking. This allows your heart rate to gradually speed up and slow down. 28.The survey mentioned in Paragraph 3 shows that ________. A. 80% of the women surveyed are walking as a means of exercise B. 50% of the women surveyed want to swim as a means of exercise C. walking is more easily maintained than other types of aerobic exercise D. the effect of walking is as good as that of other types of aerobic exercise 29.Which of the following statements is TRUE about walking for exercise? A. Walking five days a week, 30 minutes altogether, is the goal. B. Increase at least 10% of the amount of each previous week. C. Each walk should start with the pace of doing shopping. D. Walking as much as you can in the first week is suggested. 30.What is the purpose of the easy-paced walking in every walk? A. To help reduce your blood pressure. B. To help reduce your risk of heart disease. C. To help your body lose fat. D. To help your heart rate change gradually. 31.What would be the best title for the passage? A. How to Keep Healthy? B. Walking for Exercise C. Different Ways of Exercise D. Is Walking a Type of Exercise? D Lots of people like a good fright at Halloween. Yet, the most frightening thing of all about the night is that twice as many children are killed while out and about on Hallween compared to any other day of the year, according to a study by Safe Kids Worldwide. It can also be a worrying time for others, especially elderly people living alone. Bu many people think it’s just harmless fun. But is it harmless fun? Police forces across Britain are giving warnings about Halloween night. They are asking all those wishing to celebrate Halloween this year to respect those who don’t want to join in. Some forces, like West Mercia Police, have produced “Sorry, No Trick or Treat” posters which can be downloaded from their website, and put up in windows. They want people to send them to the old or anyone who may be frightened by ghosts(鬼)knocking on their doors. A spokesman said: “Children should not call on houses where the posters are put up, neither should they call on strangers, as this can put young people at risk and also make some house owners anxious, especially those who are elderly or living alone.” The police want all trick or treaters to remember that disturbing other people or throwing objects at their homes or cars are all criminal offences(刑事罪). “What may start off as a bit of fun could end up with someone getting a criminal record,” they warn. “Parents may want to consider having a Halloween party at home, instead.” Kent Police are warning young people never to go into the home of someone they don’t know----and to remember not to frighten people. Warwickshire Police are also warning that tricks may seem like harmless fun but can cause trouble to others. They say behaviour such as throwing eggs can quickly cross the line between being anti-social and causing criminal damage. This can result in fines of £2,500 for small offences. 32.What has the study made by Safe Kids Worldwide found? A. Halloween brings people no fun B. Halloween night puts some kids at risk C. kids are involved in criminal offences D. kids are afraid of Halloween 33.Why are British police forces making efforts to? A. Control anti-social behaviours B. Put an end to trick or treat C. Make Halloween safe and trouble-free D. Punish those who frighten others 34.Why are the “Sorry, No Trick or Treat” posters designed? A. To express disagreement with Halloween B. To ask people to respect the elderly C. To warn little kids to behave themselves D. To make some people free from harm 35.Which of the following things is encouraged by the police during Halloween? A. Having a Halloween party at home B.
