When it comes to eating, most of us don’t have to go very far. But for many bird species, finding food may mean traveling hundreds of thousands of kilometers. A team of researchers from institutions in the UK and Ireland spent five years tracking (追踪) four species of seabird to monitor their travel patterns. It was discovered that over the five years, the species covered an area of 1.5 million square kilometers when hunting for food-almost four times the size of Japan. The findings were published recently in the journal Ecological Applications. As part of the study, over 1,300 birds were fitted with GPS tags to track their movements. It was discovered that most of them search for fish in the same place-waters off the coast of Scotland. As a result of this, organizations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) will spend more time trying to preserve coastal Scotland. “For the first time, this study provides us with a full map for each breeding colony (繁殖群体) of the feeding areas for some of our most important seabird species,” wrote the study’s lead author Ewan Wakefield, from the University of Glasgow. “That means we can now protect the places these birds catch the fish they need to feed their hungry chicks.” The findings could also affect the future building of offshore wind turbines (满轮机). Although wind turbines help to fight climate change by providing a green source of energy, their huge blades (刀片) are blamed for the deaths of thousands of birds each year, as they often fly into them. Stuart Housden, director of RSPB Scotland, said in a news release that although climate change is a huge threat to both humans and nature alike, we should “invest in an energy system that works for both people and our natural heritage.” To protect both nature and the environment, the RSPB supports the building of turbines in areas that won’t have “significant adverse (不利的) impacts on important bird populations or their habitats,” it wrote on its website. 26.What did the scientists from the UK and Ireland find about the four species of seabird? A. They have totally different travel patterns. B. They prefer to catch fish in places near their nests. C. Climate change has influenced their hunting distance. D. They can travel a very long distance to find food. 27.According to the article, why is the research important? A. It shows what a perfect living environment for seabirds is. B. It was the first to use GPS technology to track seabirds. C. It could guide people on how to better protect seabirds. D. It provides more information about the diet of seabirds. 28.Wind turbines are a threat to seabirds because ________. A. they produce noise that could disturb seabirds B. their strong airflow could influence the flight of seabirds C. their big blades may kill the seabirds that fly by D. they force seabirds to move away from their habitats 29.According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, ________. A. no more wind turbines should be built in the future B. we should think of more measures to protect the climate C. the government should invest more money to protect seabirds D. we should consider wildlife when we build turbines in the future Flying to another country can sometimes take several days. But the designer of a futuristic jet (喷气式飞机) says his plane could take you around the world in your lunch break. According to an article in The Sun, the planet, called the Antipode, could carry 10 people and use rocket boosters (火箭助推器) to go 12 km high. Then it could fly from London to New York in less than 20 minutes, or from New York to Shanghai in 24 minutes. A normal Boeing 747 has a top speed of 917 km/h. The fastest plane in the world right now is Air Force One. It carries the president of the United States and can reach 1,092 km/h. But the Antipode would be capable of reaching a crazy 25,750 km/h! Canadian designer Charles Bombardier says his plane could be 10 times faster than the Concorde, which could fly at 2,180 km/h. The Concorde used to be the world’s fastest passenger plane between 1976 and 2003. But the Concorde was very noisy and its nose got dangerously hot when it flew, A Concorde crashed in 2000, killing 114 people. No Concordes were flown again after 2003. The Antipodes design includes a special nose that stops it from overheating and having the same problems that the Concorde did. New technology, recently tested by NASA, makes the Antipode the perfect shape and weight to fly fast and safely. “It’s always something that people would like — a transportation system that could take you from one place on the planet to the other side,” Mr Bombardier told the BBC. Don’t try to buy a ticket on the plane yet, though. The design is just a concept and will need more research before it becomes a reality. 30.What is the biggest difference between the Antipode and other normal planes? A. It can fly much faster. B. It can hold many more people. C. It can fly much higher. D. It can be much safer. 31.Which of the following about the planes is NOT true? A. A Boeing 747 can reach a speed of 917 km/h. B. Air Force One is the fastest plane in the world. C. The president of the United States usually takes a Boeing 747. D. The Antipode could be about 24 times faster than Air Force One. 32.What do we know about the Concorde? a. It used to be the world’s biggest passenger plane. b. It made loud noises when it was flying. c. Its nose got dangerously hot when it flew. d. It stopped flying after 2000. A. ab B. bc C. cd D. ad 33.According to the story, we know that ________. A. a US designer designed the Antipode B. people now can book a ticket to fly on the Antipode C. the Antipode has already been produced D. the Antipode won’t have the problems that the Concorde had 三、完形填空 Whatever misfortune you face, just hold up your head and face it with a smile! Getting kids to do their homework can be a challenge, and when they do sit down to study, a variety of other problems can appear. Doing homework may not be as fun as playing video games or chatting with friends, but it shouldn’t be something that kids hate. Your children’s assignments should not be busywork, but should help them build a skill or learn something new. You can offer help by stepping in to answer questions or offer encouragement. This gives you a chance to see what they are learning and how well they understand the material. It helps you understand their learning style and shows you care about their education. Many kids refuse to study by asking why they have to learn things they’ll never use in real life. If your son or daughter shows little interest in their assignments, you can make them seem more important by pointing out ways you use them in daily life. Parents who feel that their kids have too much homework can talk about it with the teachers, but they’re in the minority. A 2007 survey showed that 15 percent of parents said their kids had too much homework. About 60 percent said the homework load was just right, and 25 percent thought their children had too little homework. If you think it takes your child too long to finish homework, try to determine whether the problem lies in having too much work or managing time poorly. One of the things homework is supposed to do is to teach time management. If your child feels bored while doing homework, consider the following suggestions to make study sessions more enjoyable. Get help from friends: if your children are struggling with an assignment, let them call a friend for help or invite a friend over to work on it with them. You might also invite neighborhood kids over and let them do homework together. Have them sit around the dining table and help each other. Add physical activities: set mini-goals for homework and allow time for stretching, jumping around, or a snack after each goal is completed. For a kid who can’t sit still, find active ways to study. Turn the tables: let your children teach you a lesson. Let them give you a quiz on the things they have just learned. Title: Help with your child’s homework The right goal of doing homework It is supposed to help your child 54.a skill or learn new things Advantages of offering help ◆You can see how things are going with your child’s studies. ◆You can see what your child’s learning style is like. ◆You can show you are 55. in your child’s education. 56. that you may face The child’s thinking that the assignments are 57. A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then appeared easily. But it had a swollen body and small, fragile wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would be smaller in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling (慢慢爬行) around with a swollen body and fragile wings. It never was able to fly. The man did not understand that the limited cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were Nature’s way of forcing fluid (液体) from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. 24.D。 25 A。 26.D 27.C 28.C 29.D 30.A 31.C 32.B 33.D 34.C 35.A 36.B 37.D 38.B 39.A 40.B 41.D 42.C 43.A 44.B 45.C 46.D 47.D 48.A 49.A 50.B 51.C 52.C 53.D 54.build 55.interested 56.Problems / Difficulties 57.useless 58.Discuss 59.cost 60.management 61.boring 62.Turn 63.activities 64. 65.A kind man cut a cocoon open in order to relieve the pain of a butterfly struggling out of the cocoon, only to find it could never fly because of his help. Our life is more or less like this. Sometimes, struggles or obstacles in our life are a must for our growth. It is these struggles or obstacles that increase our willpower and contribute to our success. Nowadays, with only one child in most families, parents do whatever they can to satisfy the child’s needs and even do for him/her what should be done by himself. As a result, too much care and protection from parents deprives children of chances to grow strong by overcoming obstacles. If I were a parent, I would first keep my child well informed that life is never easy and that he/she should be ready to face any difficulty. Besides, I would expose him/her to the hardships in life, providing him/her with chances to take on challenges.查看更多
